Hello there, I’m pretty confused between REDCODE COMPRESSION and TYPICAL MAX RECORDING TIME USING RED MINI-MAG 120GB. For example I’ve read that at 3:1 maximum available REDCODE for 4.5K (4608 × 2160) at 24 fps means also that I could have a 3:1 compression also with a 120GB Mini Mag or Do I need a much bigger Mini Mag to have minor compression? Assuming that USING RED MINI-MAG 120GB at 4.5K (4608 × 2160) and 24 fps at 11:1 REDCODE compression we’ll have 52 minutes of footage, Can I select a compression 3:1 instead of 11:1? In this case do I need a more expensive card like 512 Mini Mag or 1TB? Thanks

If I understand your question...

I believe that all mini-mags move data at the same speed. So, 120 will allow the same compression as a 512 or 1 TB. Obviously, you will just get less recording time. If your 52 minute figure is correct for 11:1 on a 120GB card, then you should get about 14 minutes at 3:1.

Thanks Terry, I'm asking this because 11:1 compression seems to be too much compressed. For example, Do you know the Carrion footage with what settings was shooted? What I really need is to know how long a 120GB mag lasts on say 3 to 1 and 5 to 1, exactly. Thanks

You can select any compression you like. Less compression takes up more space/less recording time. Higher compression takes up less space, gives you more recoridng time. Choice is yours.

If you plan on shooting at lower compressions, larger mags are helpful yes. But sometimes having lots of smaller mags is useful too. Easier for a DIT to backup 240's and 128s than massive 512's or 1TBs.

Thanks Nick, but as I've stated before I'd like to know how long a 120GB mag lasts on say 3 to 1 and 5 to 1, exactly. Thanks

Thanks, but unfortunately RED RAVEN cannot be selected as choice in this online calculator, what Do I must choice in the calculator Epic Dragon for similarities or it's not important?

Just enter 4K and 4.5K values for Epic Dragon to get Raven equivalents (fyi I believe RED is in process of updating this calc with specific entries for each cam).

I believe if my calculations are correct it's around 17 minutes on a 120GB mag for 3:1 compression on the Raven for 24FPS at 4.5K.

Two answer your question Danilo, yes, REDCODE RAW Compression Ratio effects how much data you are writing to your MINI-MAG.

If we take 4K FF for instance, at REDCODE RAW 3:1 on a 120GB MINI-MAG you'd get about 18 minutes of footage.
At 11:1 REDCODE RAW you'd get about 68 minutes of recording time.

There is a slight speed difference for the 1TB and 512GB MINI-MAGs that is mostly noticeable when really stressing the Data Rates. For instance if you want the lowest possible Compression Ratio that Weapon Carbon Fiber has to offer that's only achievable with the two larger MINI-MAGs. It pushes data at a maximum of 300MB/s.

For Raven and Scarlet-W you'll be under that Data Rate at 140GB/s, so all the MINI-MAGs should generally offer the performance you'll be looking for.

Thanks for yours kind clarifications, I will wait for the option in the calculator, but still I'd really like to know how Carrion was shooted (how much compression), I really like the picture.

Since so much of it is slow motion, I'd guess that it would be the lowest REDCODE RAW Compression Ratio for the 4.5K 2.1:1 resolution selected. That would vary depending on the frame rate used.

Pretty interesting, sorry for the noob question, but RED RAVEN has two slots for Mini Mags?

Phil i check this forum every hour waiting for r3d files from Carrion :) :yesnod:
while searching in the data sheet...i've read WS...what does it stand for???

WS= Wide screen / not full height. I think the ratio is 1:2.41 if I remember correctly. WS vs FF in the same frame width gives you higher framerates and / at lower compression rates.
