  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE-X Professional Build 5...

So how does the new Saturation slider near Alchemy in Look>Effects differ from the usual Saturation in Look>Image? Should I be using one over the other?

Post Effects are done after gamma so there it's saturation on a gamma'd image.
Pre vs post gamma pushes the colors across the tonal range differently.

That's odd. Any change I make appears on the image pretty much instantly; I'd say in approx. half a second. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on an ancient Core i7-920 (2.67GHz), 12 gigs of RAM and an AMD Radeon HD 6870.

Debugging your problem would be easier if RED would tell us what processes and resources RCX hooks on to so you could make sure those bits are up-to-date, and maybe try uninstalling/re-installing them. It's clear there's something blocking your system from working as fast as it could. [/Captain Obvious]

It's a combination of CPU/GPU so keep both nice and fast.
More stuff will go to GPU over time.

Does Alchemy work with Red Rocket? Changes in the post effects don't seem to appear on output from Red Rocket.

Tim Eaton

All the post effects happen once the image comes back from rocket to the host.
Clarity and film grain will be the slowest but alchemy should be pretty fast.

We don't have a way to send it back out through rocket and not sure
if that would be viable.

RED Watchdog should have its own thread... EVERYBODY should know about it. It's the best thing since sliced sensors.

For everyone using diskarbitrator, red watchdog does the same thing on mac (only)

Look for it on the menubar at the top.

It'll automatically mount all redmags as read only but you can selectively
remount as read/write.

On Epic 5k RC7:1 29.97 footage, I'm having audio sync issues. Audio is sped up. On quad core Mac with 12 GB ram and RR card.
Anyone else have this?
I did not have this with beta 4.
Anyone On a Mac having Sync issues with this build?

This being the case, any chance we will have a blackmagid or Aja plugin soon to monitor these things on our reference monitors?

there's a slight UI glitch... on my 15" macbook pro (1440x900) the application windows is just a few pixels wider than 1440 and cant be resized any smaller horizontally (works vertically) despite the resize handle. this is pretty annoying due to the expand/collapse "arrows" placed on the edges of the application, because you'd have to move the whole window to the left/right in order to get to click those functions.

other than that, I'm very happy with it :)

Please email details and a report from "save report" to redcinex at red dot com?

also scrolling with the touch pad is very jittery... on MacOSX 10.6.8, by the way.

All the new Post controls (alchemy etc..) does not update on the SDI out of the rocket at All ...is it by design?
(i really don't want to do anything on the GUI OSX monitor...)

Alchemy is nice! :)
I do actually also have scrolling issues here, with the magic mouse and magic trackpad. Redcine does not understand the momentum (sloowly rolls to stop, like on iPhone), it looks like. Clicking and dragging the scroll bar works fine though.

It's quite interesting!!! Very nice indeed. TyR.

Not loving the 3-4 seconds it takes for any change to appear on the image, even playing with the single frames from Jarred's warehouse shoot.

Same complaint I've had from day one of the last Redcine...

i5 2500K, 16GB RAM, GTX570...should not be unable to process single frames...

I'll place my Scarlet-X order the very instant ACR supports r3d stills, but...

i'd assume this release isn't fully optimized, they just want to enable the new features. talk to adobe about ACR support, it's supposed to be coming. i'm sure it will be there in the next version, but whether they will enable it with an update beforehand is hard to say. i'd have thought they'd have it already. redcine isn't the only way to manipulate raw data, either. try premiere or after effects if you have it. i actually have way lower specs on my laptop and get pretty good results in it, even for reviewing and grading 5k footage. especially considering it's, uh... free.

not sure why you're letting adobe camera raw control your decisions... there are ways of working currently. you can do all your raw adjustments in redcine just as well as you could with any raw file in acr, though debatably a bit slower in this release. you can export tif's or exr's that hold the entire tonal range for further color correction in your tool of choice. not sure what the real problem is... maybe it's just not the camera system for you if you can't handle small, temporary inconveniences.

EDIT: actually, i just checked... i'm getting immediate visual feedback on all controls at 1/4 res 5k. i'm using a very basic macbook from 2008. are you trying to use full res? you are on a laptop, your screen is such that you don't really need to see anything above 1/4 res unless you're zooming in, and in any case, you can judge color at lower resolution, then bump it up for sharpness adjustments and such.

as good as our laptops are getting, workstations simply have a lot more power - faster hard drives, more memory, better/more graphics card, and a red rocket should give you lightning speed. if you're trying to do serious work on a laptop, be considerate that it's still a laptop. keep in mind an r3d file holds a lot more information than say, a cr2 file. can you change the iso from your dslr? can you scrub through 24 or 96 fps in that file? if that doesn't interest you, keep shooting what you got and try to refrain from complaining for the sake of it.
