What follows is just pure speculation on my part. It is just an opinion of how RDC might handle the Epic-X trade in deal in a fair manner in which no one is disappointed.

I think it's genius and simple.
You will always (maybe for at least two years) be able to trade an "unactivated" RED ONE in for an Epic-X, at least there will be no "sudden" deadline that cuts people out.
How can this be achieved?
Simple.
When the Epic-X and/or Scarlet starts shipping ... production will cease on the RED ONE ... in this way there will be a finite number of RED ONEs ready to activate ... less than 10,000 units maybe.
Then anyone owning a RED ONE (call these the "not sorry people"), will be able to upgrade within a suitable period of time, two years would be nice.
RDC would only have to create fewer than 10,000 or even just a fraction of the RED ONEs sold ... of EPIC-X packages.
No one is in the position of missing the trade-in because they have purchased a RED ONE after the deadline ... because RED ONE production will have ceased.
I think this method with a two year window for the trade-in decision would work for everyone. Another "win win" with RDC.
