  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I just did a test of Redcine X build 183 compared to 158 and 104.

For a 28 second clip shot at 23.98 4K.

Build 104 took about 35 seconds

Build 158 took about 35 seconds

Build 183 took about 58 seconds

This is using the RED Rocket in a X16 slot.

I also forgot to mention that I tried the RED Rocket card in slot 3, the X4 slot. The warming came up on REDcine that the card was in the wrong slot. But, performance, using (using build 104 or 158) was the same, about 35 seconds for the 28 second clip.

Also noticed a better performance with b158 here and I imagine they are already working on a fix for this in the next build.
I sticked with b158 for now, shame as I'd love to use the WB color picker that was fixed in b183...

The x8 slot matters mostly for transferring the full 4k frames back to host.
Scaling to 2k on the host works fine on a x4.

We're actually seeing faster performance on 183 but there might be room for more tuning.

183 move the QT encoding outside the main app so we can get ready to go to 64bit.

I didn't realize there was something wrong with the color picker in 158. What is the problem?

Mikael - if the picker really does work better in 183, and 158 really is faster, I think you could use 183 to do the grade, and use 158 to do the export (make sure to click the automatically save RMD files).

Deanan - another issue I've had with RCX is that if a saved grade comes up with a clip, the sliders don't move to the associated positions of that grade, but stay where they are. When you go to make a change in the grade with one of the sliders, the default position is applied first, making it tough to make a slight change.

Also, will finer increments be possible in the future with the sliders?
And, as long as I'm asking questions, will there ever be a waveform? The histogram is nice, but both would be great.

Deanan,

Now that you mention the thing about Quicktime, I remember that while I had the RR card in (currently I'm switching out the LH/e for the RR when I need it, then switching back), I kept getting a message in After Effects that said the Quicktime component could not be found.

I'm not sure about the LHe requirements.

Are you on mac or win? I haven't seen or heard of any ui problems like you're describing. What type of systerm are you on?

I'm using a mac 8 core. I'll try to do some more tests tomorrow and let you know the result.

There are definitely slot issues with the LHe. Kona 3 is fine in either slot 2 or 3. LHe requires Slot 2, which RED Rocket wants, as well.

We just acquired a firewire based MOTU V4HD to see if we can avoid the slot grab and let the RED Rocket be happy in slot 2.

maybe it is specific to my setup but in b!%* color picker is broken and always pick 1700 K. But it is fixed in b183 so I'll just wait for next release.
I could grade in B183 and render faster with rocket in b158 but switching from one to the other messes with some export presets I have (need to reset the output to QT or Avid otherwise they are seen as dpx and make an error on export). I'll send some log files asap to see if the slower renders I've seen with B183 rocket can be reproduced at RED...

Deanan -

Where do I find the logs for RCX?

On windows 7 "{User's Folder}\AppData\Local\red\RedCineX"
On XP: "{User's Folder}\Local Settings\Application Data\red\RedCineX\Logs"
On OSX: "user folder"/Library/Application Support/Red/Redcinex/Logs

I have the same issue with going back to footage later with saved grades. As an example, the Lift, Gamma, Gain settings are applied and the look is displayed on the footage but the GUI controls show everything centered/zero'd out. It's impossible to pick up where you left off.

I second the idea of a waveform. Histograms are useful but for broadcast a waveform is ideal. I currently have to rely on either a dedicated waveform scope or the one that is overlaid by the external monitor.
