I recently had to export an EDL for a RED test at a lab.
I used FCP to quickly edit the footage for the grade and limit 35mm print to only what was necessary.
The lab told me Avid systems were able to output special RED EDLs with 16 characters in the REEL field thus containing the full R3D clip name (like A003_C043_0615BJ). Was much easier for them to refer to the original clips (even if I just did the edit with proxys) using the EDL for the conform and to convert the required R3Ds frames + handles in their DPX mac mini farm.

Don't know if those kind of EDL are used a lot or not, i think they are non-standart CMX...
Final Cut Pro exports only EDLs with truncated REEL names showing only 8 characters, respecting the CMX EDL specs and adds a comment to warn the user :
001 A001C004 V 01:10:12:08 01:10:31:15 10:00:00:00 10:00:19:07
FINAL CUT PRO REEL: A001_C004_042317 REPLACED BY: A001C004

after a quick search here and around the web I could not find any tool to get a RED16 EDL out of FCP... so I wrote an Applescript that does just that. It scans your edl, replace any 8 characters long reel with the full lenght RED name, delete the obsolete comment and save a copy on your desktop. :
001 A001_C004_042317 V 01:10:12:08 01:10:31:15 10:00:00:00 10:00:19:07

it did the trick with the lab so i guess it kinda works. so until an FCP update offers support for RED16 EDLs, if it can be useful to anyone...

update (jan 2011) :

New version with a much faster engine (the previous one could be very slow with long EDLs...)
No need to email me... You can now download directly the free RED16 FCP EDL script here :

http://foolcolor.net/RED16_FCP_EDL.zip
or
http://mika.nerim.net/RED16_FCP_EDL.zip

Download, unzip and run the script, it will ask for the EDL file then will convert it to a new RED16 EDL and save it to your desktop.
Please get in touch if you experience any problem with this script so I can fix it... any feedback (good or bad) is always welcome.

Mikael

I can send you the script by email, just send me a message with your address

it might have bugs so I prefer not a wide distribution before it is confirmed working for the 'beta testers'

he, he..
a few months ago my friend and myself did the same thing. we called that program "monkey helper" because we had some difficulties with FCP EDLs when working with red files inside monkey extract.

basically, program is taking names from FCP reel names and exchanging it with the 8 character name in EDL.

it's really simple program. if you wish - i can also send it to anyone who needs it - send me P.M. (hope i am not stealing your thread Mikael)

but i am sure Mikael's script is doing the same thing.

as a teaser - here is grab from this simple program:

all the best,

filip

no problem hehe

I searched reduser and could find anything so I wrote a small script but yours seems much more advanced with a real name and a GUI :-)

hope FCS 3 can do this and much more

I noticed that this was post was about a year old. Has there been any advances in this area in the year? If not, I would like a copy of your script: petercrombie@gmail.com

I emailed you the script.

It was written last June (not a year old) and I don't think things changed with FCS3 regarding long tape names in EDLs

Hi,

Saw this interesting post. I am used to using Red on Avid and being able to have excellent avid edls using the red16 format (downloaded from the RED.com site) via Avid EDL Manager. I am going to be on a FCP this time using Red and am doing a lot of tests prior to starting up. I noticed when I generated my edl, I was missing the red16 format. I would love a copy of your script, if it is still available.

Hi Mikael,

Thank you for sending the apple script. It totally works. Compared it to an old edl from a locked pix avid project generated using the red16 template in the EDL Manager. And it appears to be identical. The final test will be sending it to the online house to see if all is ok. Although most likely I will be using XML, I like to have the option of the good old edl. The more options, the more flexibility and oh - did I mention, less hours (always a bonus)!! Nothing worse than being a slave to technology!!

Thank you!!

All the best,

Brigitte

I need help please!!

Hi,

Do you receive a lot of requests for your script? If not - I would be really surprised, as I think that your tool is a "must have" thing.
Up till now I was using 2 workflows:
1. If the stuff were to go out for grading - I was editing with Avid and then sent red16 EDL.
2.When I was to grade myself on Apple Color - I used FCP.
Now I'd like to edit in FCP and send the stuff for grading outside my facility, so your script would be a life saver for me. I would really appreciate if you could send me a copy. Thank you in advance.

Sent you the link

Yes this script does show a continuous interest among redusers...

I wrote several other donationware scripts for RCX workflows (EDL-XML-trim...) and a few unreleased one I use for my own workflows (REDline renderer for batch processing dailies, a file collector to copy R3Ds used in an edit across several drives/sessions if the drives are too numerous to be all plugged at once)... These tools might get released too once I get the time to polish them a bit...

Best

Mikael
