  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED WEAPON - Info and Data Sheets

Jarred made reference that the current SSD module won't change over to the new body, so apparently it is molded into the design in some way or another.

My hunch goes more in the direction of a higher bandwidth transfer (at least "too").

I took that to mean that
a) the 1.8 SSD form factor will not work at all with Weapon, and
b) Weapon will have it's own Mini-Mag module.

My hunch goes more in the direction of a higher bandwidth transfer (at least "too").

but that would suggest faster mini mags coming, meaning the ones they are selling now are "days numbered?"

Thanks for centralizing the info. I feel bad though - JUST got my scarlet a couple of months ago... no way can i afford to put out another 10k on a dragon... so that i can hopefully afford to upgrade to a weapon in the end... looks like i just bought an end of life camera without even realizing it.

Will the Rocket X be re-offered at a discount with the Weapon upgrade?

Phil, can you add the battery information to your first post collection!? Thanks man!

Yep. And a few other things as well.

Power and Power Modules

- REDVOLTs, REDVOLT XL, and RED BRICKS all work with Weapon. However, there will be new power modules for Weapon.
- It sounds like with these new modules we won't need things like the Module Adapter any more.
- It is unclear if all previous Module with work or not with Weapon.
- It has been hinted that the DSMC Side Handle might not be compatible with Weapon, but something new is in the works to replace it.

Display Technology

- Weapon will have a new type of monitoring connection.
- On the Weapon brain there will be 2X LCD/EVF connections on the brain.
- Red is making a Weapon connection to LEMO adapter so current LCD Touch and EVFs are compatible.

Recording Media

- Weapon is not compatible with 1.8" REDMAG Media, it uses MINI-MAG Media however.
- When you trade in your Dragon for the Weapon upgrade include the MINI-MAG Side Module.
- Red is working on a "plan" to assist with those coming from 1.8" REDMAG setups to MINI-MAG. Details unknown as of yet.
- Red has hinted that other capacity MINI-MAG Media cards are in development. Likely a less expensive 256GB-ish model. I'm a 512GB man myself :)

Miscellaneous Things
- Weapon is smaller in length than current Mysterium-X and Dragon brains.
- We have seen a side view of the camera that hints at some sort of LCD screen camera right. Unclear if this is standard with Weapon or a future accessory.
- All DSMC Lens Mounts are compatible with Weapon. This includes the Motion Mounts as well.

Red Rocket-X
- The Red Rocket-X will work on Weapon footage.

Anyone hear if the current Switchblade is also not compatible?

And is there a new monitor grouping about to be released as well or will there no longer be RED proprietary Monitors?

Thank you very much

However, the DSMC form factor has been rather pivotal in allowing us to shoot cinema quality images in a much smaller and portable form factor. This has also had an interesting effect on the bubble blowers, air boys, and general camera movement. Think Jibs, Aerial Gimbals, Underwater Housings, Handheld Stabilizers, etc....

And this...

What we seem to be looking at with Red Weapon is essentially DSMC Version 2.0. A more production ready body is possible in an even smaller form factor which unlocks certain "freedoms" that for those of us who worked with film cameras are rather acutely aware of.

Seeing the focus on a compact and "fuller" camera body/brain design evolving further makes a lot of sense.

This has been my conclusion, as well, Phil. Honestly, I'm not sure why there is so much speculation. It seems painfully obvious. Further, Jarred's "hints" are pretty blatant, and directly reinforce ideas generally associated with progress in electronics. Tech advancements have been occurring at predictable, and exponential rates since -- fat kids love cake.

What's really funny to me -- Months ago I was at RED HQ and mused with a particular person about what I felt would be the next logical direction for the camera based on the proliferation of new cinema platforms (namely gimbals). The person I was speaking with vehemently denied my thinking, and said that we shouldn't speculate on the development track. Now I'm wondering if this particular individual was merely throwing me off the scent, or if he was suffering from a case of plausible deniability. I'm sure RDC employees are sufficiently admonished in regard to leaking information to customers, whether those leaks be intentional or inadvertent. For the record, irrespective of what I heard -- I wouldn't be able to tell anyway. ;-D

In any case, Moore's law and Jarred's statements regarding development cycle can only lead to one place -- miniaturization (body/components) and optimization (sensors). Skipping years perfectly fits Moore's paradigm, and supplies a convenient development model that intersects nicely with advances in supply chain industries.

edit -- "Miniaturization" also applies to sensor photo sites, but I felt "optimization" would be inclusive when bringing the sensor up to cutting edge specs/capabilities. Plus "optimization" was meant to imply that "smaller" is not necessarily the end goal.

and i'm being told that my investment is essentially end-of-life.

looks like i just bought an end of life camera without even realizing it.

Now, I shouldn't talk, as I am not a RED owner. But I will anyway. ;-) I think that if a camera truly performs very well when it's new, then it will continue to do so even when it's discontinued.

If that 3K Scarlet was actually released I think I'd still be using it today (in fact I would have bought two). It may have saved me a bit of money in the end. And I'm talking about still photography, although it would have made a terrific true HD camera.

Check.. Indeed Mini-Mag port on camera-left.

Just updated the first post with much of the relevant information that has been released in the last 72 hours. Should clear up a lot about power, displays, Red Rocket-X compatibility, and mounts.

One thing I can confirm. Red has been working rather hard on Weapon.

Thank you Jarred.

Hahaha that label looks pretty badass even though I'm not a massive fan of the name!

Thanks for posting Phil.

I look forward to this new "Weapon".
