  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Weapon - How Long Before MF Glass goes nuts...

Here is the lens test I promised. It's the first one I've ever done formally, so I hope that I've got most of it right. I put my Contax Primes in there as well for comparison.
All lenses tested under the same light, 5600K fluoros, f8, STH OLPF, Shot in 6K and bounced to 1080p with DEB. Resolve medium NR, medium OLPF comp, high detail.
I made very slight adjustments to lift and gain to equalise them for all lenses. This makes it easier to see any colour mismatches.
I was in a bit of a hurry so the framing doesn't match very much, but you can get the gist of it.

I was surprised that the Mamiyas do not colour match throughout the range. It's nothing that an experienced colourist couldn't fix easily, but it's noticeable.
I'm not surprised that the Contax zoom is inferior to the primes, being slightly darker and having a slight greenish tint, but this lens is not known as a classic.

Great test Paul! The Mamiya's look great - and I concur. When we our Hasselblads, we barely notice a drop in perceived sharpness at all...drop right into our worflow just like other glass.

Also FYI - that Contax zoom is not really a "Zeiss", it's made by Sigma I beleive...(it was licensed to Leica to from what I remember)...so that may explain why it looks so different! Try the 35-70 or 28-85...think you may love them!

best

Can someone please explain in further detail the equipment and process used for Tilt Shift lensing with MF lenses on an Epic camera?

Are you using a Tilt Shirft adaptor inbetween the camera and lens mount? If so which adaptor is best?

Yes, an EOS to Hasselblad tilt adapter. There are many on ebay. The best though by far is by Mirex, but these are quite expensive...

Same sensor does not mean same size

Red one MX was 4 K
Epic MX was 5K

EPIC dragon is 6K
Weapon Dragon could be 8K

Use your old moint and crop to 6K... Use new mount and use full 8K

Maybe, but that's a lot of pixels crammed into a small sensor, I'm not sure the resolution benefit is helping the other aspects of the sensor technology. 6K is more then enough for a long time and there might not even be an 8K standard due to public demand. 4K is stretching what people can perceive with motion pictures. Going higher there will be less and less likely that people see the difference. So why not hold onto 6K and create a perfect image, that's really where the focus should be I think.

I was just saying same sensor generation could mean a different crop size... but yes, fitting more pixels into a similar sensor size should reduce low light performance... but since WEAPON will use DRAGON sensor this will not happen right now (8K s35).

This thread is about MF glass so maybe WEAPON will allow larger DRAGON sensor crop at higher res (full frame, 65...) but since it was confirmed DSMC OLPF are compatible, 1st gen WEAPON probably will still be s35 / 6K DRAGON...

but who knows :-)

An idle thought occurred to me today as I was sitting watching the rain tip down whilst enjoying the warmth of the log burner. A lot of us have dragons, now I have never taken mine apart in the way you used to as a kid with old radios and tape decks so I only have Reds data on the size of the sensor. What if behind all that metalwork was a full frame sensor waiting to get out, truly the laugh would be that the upgrade is a new bit of bodywork and we already are 8k and FF compatible. Jarred would truly be able to chuckle at that one.

That would be nice, but i think it is a little far fetched. But we can all wish...

This seems very likely been thinking same thing. Epic body electronics won't support 8k. Weapon body will...

doubtful, because then we would be currently windowing at 6K and that doesn't seem logical. By all accounts its a new size sensor but not "new sensor" in the way Dragon was a new sensor to MX. After Weapon the next camera will have an actual New Sensor as Jarred stated recently.

Personally I'm hoping it's a true 65mm MF sensor size.

Jared, why not make a Hasselblad H (not V) mount. If anything those lenses are sharp. Like 50-110mm zoom or 120 macro or 150mm portrait. All amazing lenses and many photographers use them.

My lens set arrived today.

Got home from a 10 hour shoot and couldn't help shooting a bit more.

First impressions of lenses are good.

First impressions of shitty adapter I bought are not good.

I will do a full test this weekend. They look good though even on the dragon.

Try the Mirex Tilt/Shift adapter...German precision and metal...expensive...but very useful...

Yes they are sharp, but that´s it. At least for my taste they don´t have a soul, the 50-110 is soft and flares like hell, good too know though and used here when exact this effect has to be achieved. CA is average, close up is a pita, you need to use extension tubes even on a H body when doing close up work on a face. After all, they have an electronic control of aperture and focus. To get back on topic, I don´t think the new body W will have any influence on MF glass.

Cheers, Ulf

It's great that Arri is leading the way. Right now there is great cinema glass for FF, so I'd love a FF sensor on my weapon. Medium format would be very cool, but it doesn't seem quite professional or like a big enough market yet.

Cheers,

Wynn
