RED Weapon 8K - Lens Coverage Information

Exciting day today, well if you shoot like me, in remote and harsh environments (Arctic) I guess ;-)
Gear, volume and weight is often a restriction in those conditions, so I was looking for the "perfect" all-in-one lens with a huge reach.

I just received my Canon 50-1000mm which goes 75-1500mm with its built-in convertor.
Took it out of the box, popped it on Weapon-F, and did a quick and dirty shot at 6K FF.
On the little screen I can't detect vignetting at 75mm.
Between 50mm and 75mm there's a tinge of vignetting, it looks like. I'll test it deeper in the next days :)
Anyway: I realize this is not the fastest lens around and nothing for studios but, boy, zooming from 75 to 1500mm... wow!

At least now I'll be able to film polar bears more safely than with my 15mm ;-O
And I'll need longer rods... hah!
More later...

In a logical sense,

I don't understand why, can't Zeiss's 15-30 can't cover FF Vista version sensor (It covers 16x9)

Hmm... does FF in 8k is larger diameter than the still camera's "full-frame sensor"?

I am very worried about investing wide angle lens now...

The best reference I've seen to wrap your head around the geometry is Phil's diagram that opens this thread. The key difference between 35FF and Dragon8K is aspect ratio and width.

H: 24MM vs 21.6MM
W: 36MM vs 41MM

From a practical perspective, it's the width that is most likely to show vignetting on a lens that covers 24x36 FF just fine but can't manage 21.6x41. Looking forward to Phil mounting the Otus primes and some other candidates in his testing - claims are one thing, tests are something else...

Over the last couple of months there's been a fair amount of skunk works tests involving the RED Weapon 8K.

For those of us destined for 8K, Lens Coverage has been a question mark and a head scratcher as the 8K FF Weapon sensor is considered VistaVision+ and a hair outside of the well known FF35 3:2 standard image circle.

But the news is pretty good when it comes to...
.

Hi Phil

Have the red pro primes been tested in 8K?

Thanks

What about the RED Lenses.

What about the RED Lenses.

We tried to put RED 17 - 50 and in 8k doesn't work.
What about this lens?
Someone knows something about it?

Yes, that older zoom was designed for Super 35mm image circle, so you'll notice it covers Helium at slightly smaller resolutions, like 7K or 6.5K.

Phil,
Have you tried any of the Leica R lenses on VV sensor yet?

I haven't tested every possible Leica-R lens, but the ones I own and a great deal of others cover nicely.

Phil,

that is good to know! I'm starting a Leica-R lens collection, starting with a Leica Vario-Elmar-R 80-200mm f4 lens

For the atypical Underwater and Natural History shooters

MONSTRO 8K VV:

NIKONOS RS 13mm Fish Eye:
~ Nikon Mount (Gates Custom)
• Vignettes mildly on the smaller 8K formats
• Vignettes heavily from 8K HD to FF
• Covers up to 7K FF

CN20x50 IAS H (aka 50-1000mm):
~ PL Mount
A) No extender (1.0x) – Full zoom range (50-1,000mm)
• Vignettes extremely in any 8K format
• Vignettes badly in any 7K
• Vignettes faintly from 6K HD to FF
• Covers everything up to 6K 3:2

B) No extender (1.0x) – Higher zoom range (+/-400-1,000mm)
• Covers fairly well (sometimes a very vague vignetting) on all resolutions
• Unless you need every candela available on every photon, I wouldn't use it with dynamic subjects

C) With built-in 1.5x extender engaged (75-1,500mm)
• Covers the full range...
• On every resolution...
• Mind blown (but very happy :willy_nilly: )

More tests to do with 'odd lenses'

Interesting notes on the 50-1000!

Thanks Phil!
It's a 'whacko' lens, almost behaving against the laws of optics.
If you're ever on our 'little rock', you should give her a test run :)

Will do! I have yet to use it on an actual shoot, but did get to test it on a 6K Dragon a long time ago. It's great that the extender allows coverage and more importantly insane range.

Which Leica-Rs do you have, I have a possible shoot coming up with the Monstro and I am still checking out which lenses to use.
