RED Weapon 8K - Lens Coverage Information

Thanks for the link Dan!

Really curious if these cover or don't. Their literature says they cover a 36 x 24mm image circle. But then I heard (from Leica), that they only cover from 50mm and up.

So the key thing to understand is image circle is measured via the diagonal or diameter. So for instance, Dragon 6K FF is 30.7mm wide sensor, but it's maximum diagonal is 34.53, which means at 6K FF (as we already know) the Summicron-Cs cover.

Weapon 8K's image circle at 8K FF is 46.3mm, which is significantly larger.

I've had my hands on the camera longer this time around, but I will need to do much more in depth tests as some of the shared notes omitted some vignetting which should be documented appropriately. Most of which won't mean a thing for 8K HD or 8K WS, but certainly should be noted for 8K 2:1 and 8K FF. Working on it.

well Phil beat me to it with a very detailed explanation as usual. Thanks!

According to this - 36mm would give an image circle of 43.3mm (assuming the sensor is actually 36x24mm - it would be misleading if it wasn't, but...)

If you see where the Vista Vision frame (36x24mm - 43.3 image circle) -would intersect with the 8K WS - you'd cut off the corners a little. But instead of a 17.27mm height, to get a 2:40 aspect ratio you'd need a 17.07mm height - and that should fit neatly/tightly into that circle.

Okay, I see where I missed on this - apparently they have a slightly larger than 36mm image circle. It's confusing (or even misleading) to call it a 36x24mm image circle because 36x24mm describes the size of a rectangular Vista Vision sensor. There's really no such thing as a 36x24 circle. Bastards!

For those with an investment in existing Super 35 lenses the IB/E expander is definitely worth a look. Here are some links to information for this universal mount expander that is now shipping.

Thank you John. I really look forward to doing some extensive tests with the S35XFF Expander in hopefully a couple of weeks. This will be a potentially powerful bit of kit for a lot of folks hoping to extract the image character from S35 lenses on the larger FF/VV+ formats. Very curious how it performs on ultra wides myself.

We are finishing of a line of extenders with generous clearance for many PL lenses.
1.2x with 1/2 stop loss- enough to make S35 lenses cover 6K FF Dragon (tests pending)
1.4x for older Academy 35 to cover FF 6K dragon- 1 stop loss
2x for S35 lenses to cover 8K dragon (tests pending ) 2 stop loss
Very cost effective....;-)

Phil,

We have a few pieces in our Burbank office. Just liaise with Randy and he will set you up I'm sure.

I'm looking forward to playing with these new extenders...... Maybe we won't sell our beloved Cooke 18-100 after all.

While you guys are testing ... I have both your 1.4 and 2x, which I use on arri master prime anamorphics ... Would be nice to know how they cover (i.e. Do I also need the s35xff 1.2). Also on the t2.8 recommendation for the s35xff 1.2, I'd to know how usable it is at T2.

Patrick,

Coverage is not the question. The IB/E Expander blow up factor is 1.45. A simple extender by design is blowing up the image. The real difference here is that the S35xFF has much tighter optical tolerances for image quality and maintaining detail / resolution to the corners at 46mm depending on the original lens.

We have shipping stock of the expander If you want to evaluate /demo I'm sure we can arrange.
