Perhaps we could have something like Digg... you don't like someones post you have the option of voting to bury it.

Thanks Tom, great post.
It's just tools guys. I love my 5D2 for what it can do, but I love my RED 1 even more.
The right tool for the right job. There is no right or wrong anymore.
Everything is possible from now on. We all should be very happy campers.
It's only the talent stupid!

Have fun with the new rig Tom.

Cheers
Tim

Thanks Tom. I spend a lot of time on these forums trying to learn and plough through the immense amount of information that is on here from REDUSER's working with RED. I value it immensely. I am far from green behind the ears but the RED world is a different terrain to traverse. I do tend to ignore the noise but it reminds me of an episode of Teachers (don't know if the Americans had it!) The general bulls**t and back talk that goes on in a staff room. But I suppose that public forum for you.

Making comments about other cameras only adds fuel to an already blazing fire. Its an evolutionary period and there will be an immense amount of new users once the new lines are released. The mods will have a hard enough time retaining a high level of decorum without having to babysit the dedicated users too.

I missed that post....and I'm not sorry...sounds like some people forgot you should only post things that you would say to somebody in person and not expect to get punched!

How about the golden rule of treating people the way you would like to be treated......

Dave

No. Because unfortunately the majority is not always right. In fact the masses may like what is currently not appreciated now, and lets face it a digg style system for content approval will lead RedUser to becoming Rickrolls in 4K with little else.

I think RedUser should continue to exist as it does today, because it offers a great community and a platform for many types of RedUsers (current and future) a place to discuss the technical stuff and the art.

If you want a focused group to explore the important topics (which would be a great resource even if you cannot participate in it) I think having RedUser Pro would be a great idea.

RedUser Pro should be about discussing Red/Digital Cinema in a professional manner online with direct access to Red staff. Only a select few verified people should be given access to RedUser Pro and all applications should be properly vetted by the moderators. Everyone can read and see the discussions, but only the real pros who are mature can contribute.

I'm not sure a whole separate Reduser Pro would be the best bet either. A lot of really good information would never find it's way to people who really care.

Perhaps a combination of them both. Admins, mods, and "Pro" Redusers can upvote (Perhaps we should strive to be more like Reddit then Digg) posts.

This does change the whole dynamic, making the board quote-based, but the relevant and important information makes it to the top. If nobody bothers to upvote, then thread proceeds in it's linear fashion as normal.

EDIT: Actually, a system almost exactly like Reddit would work perfectly. The difference is that it still maintains the appearance of standard message boards, and as previously stated, not everyone can upvote.

There would have to be exceptions. Recon, "Jobs/equipment for hire", and stickies for example would have to maintain their current linear message board appearance.

One last thing, make sure that you have, in the EULA right front and center, and in bold, something like:

These boards are for RED discussion only. Defamation and/or extended discussion of other camera companies or products will result in a ban.

Deleting slander should be Reduser's #1 policy. That thread made the entire community look evil. Good post Tom & Jason

Just as a general note, if you find a post that is offensive or otherwise violates the reduser policies, you can use the little
report.gif
button that you'll find under the avatar to alert us mods.

It is already possible to rate threads, by going to the top of a thread and find the "Rate Thread
menu_open.gif
" tab. 1 to 5 stars.

Since I frequently play the asshole on this site, let me just lay it out for you guys:

If I even think that people are intentionally ignoring our clear and simple request to take that discussion somewhere else, they will get an immediate vacation from this site. No questions asked.
<rant off> :)

This is Red's forum. Let the cleansing begin

RED User is full of little gems, like the 'Ask David Mullen' thread, and many other (those specially in the Cinematography area for me).

Why don't just ignore childish posts, close pointless threads and have a constructive atittude as a whole.

RED User is great as it is.

I thought that is what the stickies were for, so that the moderators/admins could push important posts to the top of the sections. The problem is, however, once you start trying to rate posts in terms of display order, at some point, all you will see at the top is all the higher rated threads and nothing new will show up at the top. I'm not exactly sure how this system works, but I know on some boards that posting order is relative to the last person who posted to that thread.

Pertaining to a Red User Pro section, this still doesn't solve the problem. You have a select few set of people that are allowed to post to a section. If the board had continued on the path it was at with the way people were treating each other, I can imagine the professional segment would clearly never read the regular areas. Then, people without permission to talk in the Pro section would surely start up another thread in another area where they could discuss it creating two different locations for the same topic, making things MORE confusing since the discussion would be split.

I think the admins here have the best possible approach, demanding that people clean up their act or go somewhere else. I can respect and adhere to that. I have learned SO MUCH from this board, I'd hate for others new to the craft to be turned away.

To the guys at Red User, seriously, thanks with putting up with all this trouble to give us a place where like minded (most of the time) people can come together and talk about stuff they are passionate about. Trust me, my girlfriend thanks you as well, as I am SURE she is tired of hearing me talk about how awesome the Scarlet is gonna be :)

Tricky situation for the forum moderators. If they rule with an iron fist, they get accused of censorship. If they allow threads they dislike, they end up with a bad reputation. Here is my solution: Create a "Banished" section (or call it "Disapproved" or "Not the thoughts of reduser" or whatever) and then the moderators can place everything they feel is not what they like into that thread. This way - they are not censoring, but they are able to express an opinion on the thread.

Personally, I like forums having a point of view; it increases the quality of the content.

If people want to they can always create a group for closed door conversations and the like.

Why was the thread allowed to live as long as it was? It's not like only one inexperienced moderator knew about it and it got out of control over the weekend or something. Reading through the thread, there was a lot of healthy, professional and responsible comments. Many talked about story over specs and defended the professionals in question. I agree the worst came out but I think a lot of the best came out as well. Isn't that what a heated debate usually does? I don't believe RED was hurt by this at all. Did their market share drop? Did their brand value drop? Did sales or rentals drop?

You guys - sheesh. I may shoot with a plastic Panasonic HMC150, but I write a mean script. No matter what camera is shooting - WRITERS CONTROL THE STORY! In any case, thanks for all the great (and free) pro tips and information. It's an awesome forum, regardless of the occasional infantile outbursts (what would the internet be without the intermittent infantile outbursts?). Rock on.

How would an owners only forum help, when several who participated in this recent debauchery were RED One owners? Or would the owners only forum just be to keep our own idiocy contained within so the rest of the world can't see?

Furthermore... why would non-owners be *more* inclined to bash Canons?

If anything it seems like Red owners would be more defensive of their investment than non-owners. Maybe what we need is a REDUser without any REDOwners. ;)

I agree an owners forum is a pretty terrible idea. There are thousands of people here who will be owners in the future, or rent the camera. And people like David Mullen - he isn't an owner, but he is very experienced in cinematography and an incredibly valuable member of our community.

It's the individuals you have a problem with, not Reduser.
That's the distinction I make anyway :)

Reduser is fine, it's actually the most useful forum Ive ever come across.
