  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION

Hi Jarred ! I'm sure your keeping an eye on the requests for the Station
I've made a list of the main requests for future models you might consider

USB 3,
Esata 6gps
Dual CF reader
Some form of interlocking power/ transfer connectors between modules
Power Supply and other connectors Locking feature
RED Enclosure for 2.5/ 1.8 SSD bare drives with the same connectors, drives can be easily transfered to post or for other purposes when the offload is complete

Please feel free to add anything I may have missed

Don't forget to add Red Drive mount station. A station so I can connect a Red drive Lemo cable to one of these high speed ESATA boxes.

Being an owner of the Lexar FW800 myself, I can certainly say that the Lexar is built like a toy. While it has continued to function for the 50+ times I have used it, every time I slide my CF cards into it, I cringe at how poorly it is made. It just feels wrong the way the CF engages.

While I definitely agree that the base station price seems high for something that just supplies power to a bunch of digital blocks, I don't think the price of the modules are unreasonable, at least from what I can tell from the picture. While I did pay $65 for the Lexar, it does not have USB or eSATA, and I think there is a high value to that especially if you can get the data off the cards even faster with eSATA with the newer faster cards.

The Red model looks like it could stand some abuse!

In addition, it has been mentioned that you can run the CF reader off of the FW bus power (which would be the same as what the Lexar can do), but still, means one less cable to need.

For a future Scarlet user, I think I might just pick one of these up. Given I have the Lexar already, I'm thinking of doing a timed experiment with my 32 Gig cards I have now to see if there is a difference. I have seen other FW and USB readers that pale in comparison to the Lexar with the same cards. Interesting test at least.

One question though, are these eSata ports hot swappable? I see I can get an ExpressCard/34 eSata card for my Macbook Pro. When in the field, I'd like to be able to dump video from the CF as fast as possible to a drive tethered to my MBP. It takes me like 16 minutes to dump a 32 gig card that is full right now.

I will say, what are the plans for something that could dump from CF right to a hard drive hooked up directly? I'd love to have a 64-G and a 16-G if the 64 could dump fast enough before I fill the 16 (which I don't see a problem with).

I also wonder, can all CF readers read higher capacity cards? I read the 32 with no problem, but didn't know if people experienced anything like this. I ran into this all the time with SD media.

2.5" RED MAG accepts bare 2.5" SSD and Spinning hard drives for offloading.

You can mix and match up to 3 modules per base station.

I was really guessing few days ago... also with 1,8"... well done...

ARRI be aware... they use 800$ SxS cards with 16Gbyte max... stone age technology...

I really like my Calumet firewire 800 Reader.

It's cheaper than the lexar and I would argue quite a bit better.

I like the idea of the Red Station - looking forward to all the new toys.

having just completed a 5 week feature as DIT on an MX shoot that shot almost exclusively to Red Drives I'm hoping there is a certified Red Solution for reading "Legacy" red drives over esata, as the firewire 800 ports on all the red drives we rented Didn't work - seems some people only have success mounting over FW800 with a windows system (something I'm not going to touch) Would love to see a legitimate resolution.

Actually its $800 for the 32GB SxS card. Hopefully they will support expresscard SSDs that are not SxS branded as ki pro does. These come in much larger capacities for much lower prices (48GB for $170, for example).

I've not used the Calumet, but I can't imagine the construction not being better than the Lexar, I think EVERY review of the Lexar complains about its construction.

Have you used both? The stats from Calumet state that their reader can do 45 MB/s whereas the Lexar says 100MB/s. Given the speed I quoted as how long it generally takes, that's less than 45 MB/s I am getting off of my cards (and they may be the bottleneck since they were not terribly expensive).

Compering the prices and capacities is like day and night... the cost to benefit...

When you can get the triple capacity in the same price...

Oh, and I forgot to mention, at least if you go with just the CF module, it's still cheaper AND has more interconnect possibilities than the new P2 reader

Which is $350 retail and looks very plastic.

(These are totally different things, just a comparison of price versus feature. A reader for a storage device on another camera that is still popular)

triple capacity for the same price? Current RED CF cards actually do max out at 16GB and are $300 ($500 until recently) and slower than SxS i believe. At least SxS is a proprietary technology with a relatively small market, not as sure why RED CF cards were/are so expensive...

I use an Xserve with both slots taken up for unloading material, so I can't use E-stata. Which is why it's great that these use all the different options! Where is mini-SAS? Then I can read it! Edit, I think it's AWESOME and will use it with Firewire 800!

The RED STATION modular reader system will begin shipping April 14th.

The RED MAG 2.5", RED CF, and BASE STATION are priced at $250 per module and $250 per Base.

Each Module can be used independently or linked together as a system, using E-SATA, FIREWIRE 800/400 or USB2.0

Very Slick in deed!!

Q? Stupid one probably.. I will buy a full station per Camera set, but when light traveling with only one Epic-X and the MBP can I self power the CF Reader with the USB as I do with my current one?

I am using this, like, for over a year now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...7707170&cm_re=hdd_dock-_-17-707-170-_-Product
My own red station for 60 bucks. I have one for the camera, and another one attached to my pc. All my backups are made like this. It uses two e-sata cables, one for each hdd. It is a great solution for me, i can imagine a usb 3 version that only uses one cable instead of two e-sata. I really like the red station design, but the price alone will keep me away. I mean, it should look cool next to my laptop, but it is a solution for a problem i fixxed a year ago.

Wow, my DITs cases can´t wait, four for me please!

absolut sexy.

Wow, there are some disrespectufl peeps on here- not sure how RED handles stuff that if spoken in person would induce a spinning back fist to the temple.

No coincidence that every single working DIT is raving over the solution... and those calling for spinning media support. wow, did you also clamor for more VHS decks when DVD was released, simply because of your rewinder investment?

Keep it real, put us down for 2 of everything please. Just looks pro and that's important to our clients... versus a flimsy (but mostly reliable) Lexar reader.

Hello,

I use the Lexar daily for stills and motion and it sure does feel cheap. It hasn't let me down yet though. I didn't know Calumet rolled their own. I'll have to stop at the store on 22nd St / NYC tomorrow.

The new gear looks cool but I really don't like eSATA connectors. I'm using two CalDigit HDOne RAIDs and they are using miniSAS 26 pin connectors that are made out of metal and lock into place. The LTO-4 we use also has a miniSAS on it.

I've had the unfortunate experience (twice) of knocking out eSATA connectors and having the FAT (file allocation table) scrambled. Agh.

eSata was never a well thought out idea. It was more of "we can put drives outside by running a long cable from an internal sata port!" and then all of the gaming PC motherboards started doing it.

If you haven't seen one before, there are a few photos here;

Can't wait to check things out in person at NAB.

Best!
