  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Upgraded Audio boards /i pins in NEW cameras - Now Shipping

S4/i interface

S4/i interface

congrats on getting the icable thing happening.

Note that in Build 16 it is only a preliminary implementation, GUI reporting will be improved in future releases.

As it utilizes the S4/i data scheme, I believe that this means Cooke and / or RED brand lenses only at this time.

The modified cables are full size XLR at one end and mini-XLR at the other (and yes they have some resistors inside if yiu unscrew the full size XLR shell)

The original (and now current again) cables are mini-XLR to mini-XLR, plus a full size XLR to mini-XLR adaptor.

Something's wrong here.....
Why is your preference to have a 'TA-3 to TA-3' ADAPTER CABLE and not a 'TA-3 to XLR' ADAPTER CABLE?
Isn't most audio gear normal full size XLR only or XLR with additional TA-3 (mini-xlr) connectors.
Particularily if you're using direct (or radio) mike inputs then it's going to be standard XLR.

This will mean most of time you'll need the 'TA-3 to TA-3' ADAPTER CABLE plus 'TA-3 to XLR' ADAPTER....which will mean another component which can fail /introduce noise or be lost.

And if you are using TA-3 plugs, wouldn't you just plug them direct into the Red without an adapter cable.

Why don't you just provide TA-3 (mini-xlr) to XLR leads with a 'XLR to TA-3' adapter for the times you're using TA-3 (mini-xlr) connections.
Now I realise with the audio board upgrade you no longer need the large XLR shell to house the resistors but I'd still keep it.

Or maybe you just made a typo and you'll be doing this all along.
Sorry if it sounds like I'm beating you up.

I'm still kind of hoping that the audio board upgrade includes drilling bigger holes in the camera body and sticking normal XLR's in there.

Normal XLR's would be pretty cool, but I don't think it would be likely. The milling process to drill the larger holes would transfer a lot of vibration to the body, and thereby would shake the Dicken's out of the internal components. So, Red would have to completely dismantle the internal components before starting that machining. Then it would all have to be put together again. Doable if it was just a couple cameras, but not so much when you're looking at thousands of cameras.

And how do you think they are going to switch out the audio board? Shove it through the compactflash slot?!?

I would expect the upgrade already involves taking the camera apart.

Anyway, XLR's are a bit of a pipe dream, but this would have been the opportunity.

I do not really mind the mini-xlr's that mutch, but those mini-bnc's are just horrible.

Why I'm confused is Red have said they going back to full size XLR on EPIC.

there's no "back to"....they have always been mini-XLRs...they promised an audio board upgrade, not a form factor upgrade.

i'm so excited...shooting mountain bikers today would have been much less cumbersome with that MixPre bungeed to the rig....will be soooo glad to lose it for certain applications....

That's not what we're talking about, they are changing the adapter cable from mini-full XLR to mini-mini and we aren't sure who will benefit as I would think most of us are working with full XLR.

We know they aren't drilling holes.

I'm excited too! Can't wait for improved audio!

Go Red!

The Ikonoskop has Lemo's for audio. Wouldn't that be better than mini-xlr?

I know this is purely academic since it isn't happening anyway, but this is a non-issue. If they are using(or have) a real machine shop, which they are, vibration of the body is a non-issue when drilling. The metal is much softer than the bits used for this kind of operation. They wouldn't be holding the body with one hand and a DeWalt with the other. Your camera body(and it's internal components) gets much more vibration from being hard mounted on a helicopter than it would with an industrial drill press and bit in a proper drill-mount or vise.

I think even with the fixes they ARE doing, they'll be pulling out at least some of the internal components anyway.

I was thinking of resonant vibrations from chatter at the cutting surface. Maybe it doesn't matter in practical application.

meanwhile off the topic of metallurgy and back to that useless little titbit regarding audio on the Red camera.....

Stuart,
If Red can't give me a reason why I should be using TA3/TA3 cables with an TA3/XLR adapter,

I think I might keep my old TA3/XLR cables and simply remove the resistors instead of having extra components inline.

You could do that, or make up a new one. With the new design there is no longer anything "special" about these audio cables.

We just chose to supply a full-XLR to mini-XLR adaptor (insert in rear of your microphone) and a mini-XLR to mini-XLR cable.

Just a note in case it hasn't been mentioned, Customers with RED ZOOM lenses that have the yellow lens markings ( Only a few went out to the first customers ) will need to send their lens in with their camera for the upgrade so we can upgrade the Lens Firmware.

This Will not affect anyone who is getting their new camera packages or anyone in the last 10 or so months, as all lenses with the white text are already upgraded. just wanted to give people a heads up.

Jarred, does the i-cable/upgrade make it more difficult to change mounts, for example from PL to Birger and PL to Nikon?

Thanks,

Calle

Hey Jarred

I got my lens in April (SN 6000527) - just 5 months ago. I have yellow markings. Will I be contacted or do I need to be proactive in getting the upgrade?

Thanks.

Absolutely Dylan... when the instructions to send your camera in get sent to you it will request the yellow lens gets sent in as well.

So if the markings on my 18-50 are yellow and not white, I have to send it in? I guess I need to send mine in... I bought it from another RED owner, hope that's not a problem.
