  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION

FCC does not take this long. And I'm fine without FFC sticker.

Sorry Jarred but I just have to...

Seeing you've had an FCC win with the Bomb EVF, I guess that means nothing in regard to the CF reader?

Someone call Steve Jobs.. if he agrees to put in USB 3.0 on Macs I will put USB 3.0 in RED STATIONS :)
Jarred, you've made a similar statement before but I don't understand the correlation... I use Steve Ballmer's OS.

There are mainboards available now with 6Gbs SATA and USB 3.0. Just wondering why this isn't doable on the Red Station. Is the camera (EPIC) not going to be capable of using this interface?

You know there are expansion boards which can give you usb3 on a mac? Besides. Why exclude 88% of the market (PC) Just because 12% dosn't follow suit. Don't make much of a sence. Having both USB3 and ESATA, can't be a bad thing anyway you put it.

I find myself wondering if the 88/12 number holds up in the world of RED. :001_unsure:

USB 3.0 will be on the next revision of the Mac Pro and iMac. You can pretty well bank on that because Intel announced last month that all their forthcoming chipset architectures, including Sandy Bridge, which should power the next Mac Pro, will now have USB 3.0 rolled in. Done deal.

eSATA is still faster than USB3.0 in most real-world situations anyway. And there's no contest if we're talking about 6Gbps SATA.

The interface might be 6Gbps, but even on my 3Gbps drives I have NEVER seen performance anywhere close to that for a single drive. I could see this for daisy-chaining and pulling from multiple drives at the same time, maybe that is the desire.

I've benchmarked drives internally, externally through SATA, and in cases for FW400, FW800 and USB2.0. In all these cases the speed of the drives has been the bottleneck. (Used Xbench to test).

Granted, with RAID and stripping yes, you can make faster "drives", but the red station is for acquisition from single drives. USB3 is overkill.

The latest numbers say 91% Windows, 5% Mac. Though as Terry points out, the numbers will be vastly different for the motion picture world.

Also, you never know what Apple is going to do. They may just push on through to Intel's Light Peak technology which is up and coming.

USB3 suffers from many of the same issues as USB2 in terms of CPU hit. I still think FW is superior, but given the higher cost to implement it (And yes, I can speak with authority on this as I have worked on a video camera chip that they scrapped FW on since USB was so much cheaper, no licensing was required).

And the problem with eSata is that it is not hot-swappable. I like to use by card readers on many machines and I'd not want to bring both my laptop or my workstation down just to remove/add the reader.

Of course, we're talking about interface speeds, not device speeds. Many people use eSATA RAIDs or connect multiple devices via multipliers. You will see the same with USB3, just as we see with USB2. People wanting to run multiple devices, small self-contained RAIDs, etc.. Those using individual drives, won't see much of any performance difference between a USB3 or SATA connection as the limiting factor will indeed be the drive itself.

And that is the thing, USB3 is backwards compatible with USB2, and given that both of my macs have a HUGE number of USB ports, I see no reason to have USB3 when there is no performance gain with the RED STATION. The USB2 interface can work on USB3 ports.

What I don't know, and this could change that opinion, if you have say 3 RED DRIVES and you are reading all 3 at the same time, and all of them are USB2 on a USB3, would they be faster in that case? Personally, since the gating factor is still the access times of the drives and the singular interaction with the CPU (which is a downfall of USB), even with three drives, I think USB2 at 480Mbps is still going to be sufficient to not be the slowest factor.

I just don't see what USB3 buys you.
