  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION

You can hotswap eSata. I often make backups to drives using one of these: http://www.vantecusa.com/en/product/view_detail/295

On Windows I run a tool called hotswap that makes it easier.

Not in all cases, it depends on the chip-set of your sata controller. There are numerous combinations of drives/controllers that have problems with doing a hot-swap.

Granted, on newer machines and controllers it looks like more and more are using fully implemented sata that does allow hot swapping, I've still read lots of stories of problems. I'm glad your experience is good.

(And PS, I use one of those from a different company, but hook it up to my computer through USB, so the computer only sees USB and therefore it is completely bound by the controller in the module which works okay when I hot swap as well. A few times it didn't, so I just cycled the power on the unit)

The latest numbers say 91% Windows, 5% Mac. Though as Terry points out, the numbers will be vastly different for the motion picture world.

heh. I knew you guys would dwell on that.

Fact is that I threw an arbitrary number in there, just to make a point. Wheter Mac's cover 1 or 50% of the market is irrelevant.

You don't exclude a feature solely because some of the population can't/won't use it.

It would be kinda like making descisions on camera development, based on whether socker moms could use it or not. Pun definitelly intended.

Not sure what your "latest numbers" are referring to exactly. I know there are as many ways to quote these stats as there are research firms. Here's a story from today (10/14/10), which, according to Gartner, has Mac sales at 10.4% of the market (last quarter). Of course, this is not the installed base, but current sales. One reason overall Microsoft numbers are so dominant is that they completely own the corporate cubicle - and who wants to be there? :001_rolleyes:

Again, I'd be very curious to know what the mix is in the world of RED.

:jacked: Sorry!

Huh? :skep: You think there should be costly features added to a product that no one would use? I don't get that. I realize you are covering yourself with "some..." and "solely..." but, it seems to me that the demand for a feature (or lack thereof) is a rather important consideration in deciding whether to include it.

Hey Rick,

Could you explain a bit more about the Sata controller not being hot swappable? I have had with big frustration an eSata card for my Mac Book Pro and most of the times it would crash my Mac. Is this because of what you said? It worked sometimes but others it would just crash it. And because I'd use it for downloading Red footage I never felt confotable using a system that would crash unexpectedly. I also end up using Firewire 800.

Yeah, some people don't know that, for instance, the built in SATA controller on my Mac Pro is not hot swappable. And I cannot add a card because I am out of slots! :) But, I use FW800 anyways so I don't mind.

You may have run into problems with esata expansion cards on the mac due to driver issues- last I experimented with it the drivers for the very common 3132 chipset were very out of date and could cause random kernel panics etc.

It all comes down to the SATA controller mostly, although I am sure there is some consideration for the device as well you are connecting.

With my Mac Pro, it is specifically the SATA controller on the motherboard that is the problem. I could use a SATA controller in one of the PCIe slots if I wanted to that supported hot swapping, but since my slots are full, I've not gone down that path personally (someone else will have to comment).

It was my understanding that it totally depends on the ExpressCard you use as not all of them are hot-swappable. In other words, there are 2 issues to deal with. 1) if you are removing the ExpressCard, that could or could not be a problem. 2) if you are swapping the eSata wires off the card, it depends on the SATA controller in the ExpressCard. Did the manufacturer say it was hot swappable?

From what I have read, others have had this issue as well with certain cards.

I always order from OWC on stuff like this as they seem to test pretty well. Here is a SATA adapter that is hot swappable it says:

Maybe try something like this.

That's a good point. I'd look for stuff specifically targeted for the Mac, like the stuff from OWC, which they usually test pretty thoroughly. You could always call them as well to ask specifically.

Jarred, you've made a similar statement before but I don't understand the correlation... I use Steve Ballmer's OS.

There are mainboards available now with 6Gbs SATA and USB 3.0. Just wondering why this isn't doable on the Red Station. Is the camera (EPIC) not going to be capable of using this interface?

Hearing the one which we do not speak of called "Steve Ballmer's OS" makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit...

What is the maximum tested rates USB3 is capable of in real-world tests? Is it daisy-chainable?

You don't exclude a feature solely because some of the population can't/won't use it.
Exactly! This is why Apple went ahead and included a command line shell, electric razor, and space heater on the iPhone. And it has still been incredibly popular...

You know there are expansion boards which can give you usb3 on a mac? Besides. Why exclude 88% of the market (PC) Just because 12% dosn't follow suit. Don't make much of a sence. Having both USB3 and ESATA, can't be a bad thing anyway you put it.

General PC/Mac numbers do not correlate to our industry.... trust me.

I would kill for USB 3 to be standard on Mac.. I have the new add-in card but its a little weak.

Jarred, can you tell us yet what other options will be available on the RED Station? I would assume that one of those options is/will be eSATA?

Very first post said:

Each Module can be used independently or linked together as a system, using E-SATA, FIREWIRE 800/400 or USB2.0.

...sure hope that is still the case, except (perhaps?) with the addition of USB3.
