  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED STATION MINI

ok JARRED Then when is the thunderbolt one coming out????? :sarcasm:

(it's on topic RIGHT )

That's not fair :) My old PC was a Ferrari out of gas and missing wheels. The Pops finally made me switch to OS X. Life is great without pop ups, I'll try windows 7 in the near future.

Win7 users, are you pop-up free?

No, but we're not pop-up free on OSX either. Not sure what issues with various web browsers have to do with OS and system choice? Most of the pop-up issues and other web issues are still dependent on which browsers you use, your security settings, etc.. You can't avoid all pop-ups, at least not without installing third-party software. And keeping most security settings cranked up to avoid potential installation of ad-ware and malware gets seriously annoying when 99% of the sites you will visit are trying to install ActiveX controls for tracking and other purposes.

So back to the REDSTATION MINI...

So, as I get my Mini USB 3 Drives, would using this http://www.sonnettech.com/product/usb3expresscard34.html give me a good performance, or just better then USB 2 but not using the full USB 3 speed?\\\

Really need to download those 256GB RED SSD's on set... FAST!!

I started in the dark side. Gave up my NBA career (not really) and built my own computer at 14. Windows was great but the marketing adds and pop ups infiltrated everything. Plus, with a PC you gotta know/learn everything. I'm not here to install/troubleshoot drivers constantly. Or reinstall all my hardware/programs. I'm here to use my tools and get my work done. We already pay for our computers, then we gotta spend our own time learning to be a computer nerd so we can use them? Forget that.

I love calling Apple Care. :) Windows 7 still isn't as user friendly as OS X?

I am afraid I don't understand. What pop-ups are you talking about? Like Jeff said, isn't it completely dependent on what websites and internet browsers you use? Not to mention most browsers have either in built pop-up blockers or add-ons, nothing to do with the OS.

You don't need to know anything. You don't have to install/troubleshoot drivers, Windows Update installs everything for you automatically. At the most it would ask you to restart and Windows 8 moves to a completely silent model. It is only when you wish to tinker and keep up with the bleeding edge that do, but it's a choice! A choice that does not exist in the Apple world, so naturally it will throw a learning curve. Like Jarred mentioned before, keeping up with latest stuff GTX 680 does require some knowledge, but why would our grandparents upgrade to a GTX 680?! Really, they could just as well be happy with the stock configuration and not change anything, at all. Windows 7 is extremely easy to use and completely hassle free if you don't wish to experiment. Naturally, switching to one OS after years on another takes some getting used to, but that's just a memory thing. Windows 8 takes simplicity to a whole new level, it's effectively turned the computer into a logical consumer device. Professionals and enthusiasts will call foul however, although the classical interface is still retained.

Using a mini-sas to Esata breakout with multiple readers is going to still be your fastest. USB 3.0 is just great because you don't need a power cable. But beware of those Expresscard USB 3.0 slots for macs... some of them require you to inject power into them for drives... not sure about the Sonnet ones.

This thread sure went off topic and I am probably completely to blame :)

Speaking of some of the joys I am experiencing in the PC world.. new stuff. I just got a GTX 680 video card today. I don't play games which this card was made for but this $500 video card just happens to have 1536 cuda cores vs. 256 cuda cores on the $1200 Quadro 4000 card it replaced, and the GTX 680 has some new H.264 magic that is rendering out 1080p H264s in 3 x real time.

As Will Keir just mentioned though.. there is a lot of tinkering you need to commit to when you go to the dark side. I am finding it worth the effort, but I wouldn't put my grandparents though this..

Sweet! So any chance we can get realtime R3D debayering through CUDA? ;-)

Okay thanks, I'll be sure to get the proper info on power, as it is for on set portable solution.

Looks like your SOL on this one Ketch.. from that link you posted:

"This is insufficient power to support USB 3.0 bus-powered 2.5" hard drives or SSDs."

Figures... I guess I'll make use of the Mini with FW800 for now on sets with no available power... Good thing I bought both, and also good thing is that in many situations I can knock on anyones door and get an extension cord in, love been back home... ;)

Same with the iphone.. great bit of tech. easy to use. My grandma even has one now. I got a Galaxy note about a month ago.

As a phone not really practical, but a nice little AMOLED, isn't it.

Im 10 feet tall remember so to scale the note actually fits me perfectly. That said.. i've used pretty much every phone out there as they have come about... and the Iphone (at least on ATT) failed at being an actual phone more than anyone.. but that didn't really matter as it was the leader at pretty much everything else (until recently) .

Wanted to add a note that we've been having issues with the Lacie USB 3.0 PCIe card and our USB 3.0 RED STATION MINI. As indicated on the Lacie website, that product only supports their own storage products!

Maybe this phone makes you look shorter. :-) Hope you checked out Red footage on it.
Btw, check out Panasonic Eluga (4.3") and new Galaxy Tab 7.7.

Yup! That was my first thought when you said you went to the 'Note' as it's a giant screen for most people but perfect for you.

See you in Vegas.

Ketch,

Are you talking about a bus powered hard drive for this? Or are your dropping your 256 mags straight to internal storage, MBP right? I am thinking the first option?

Now you getting me worry, and problem is I'm always missing dead lines cause I don't have an editing system, NO MORE... I need a Super Tower with 2 RR now... So if a new MAC pro does not show up, I really need to buy the current one and beef it up, or seriously hit S&^$# and look on to a PC Tower for Editing, and the worst is I'll have no idea were to start... :(

Don't worry, Microsoft and Apple have been slowly stealing OS ideas from each other for years. Both systems are quite similar now on the surface.

I've had trouble with LaCie drives and their support staff. G-Tech or CalDigit until RED starts making hard drives. They make a pretty good SSD :)
