  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Scarlet X #316 "Skully"

Have fun with it, I really love shooting with it. Not sure why but I like hooting with it more than epic.... Probably cause its mine. Ha

Who do we contact to make an appointment to visit RED studios? I will be in LA in Jan, and just curious.

Congrats! Tests?

Hehe. I was up until about 3:30am testing. Gotta do a bit of X-Mas stuff today and I'll be getting some V-Mount batteries in about 3 hours. I'll have something for you guys today, but I'll have something much more interesting in a couple of days :)

Christian, I contacted my Bomb Squad Rep and stated I'd do "Will Call" for my order as I live in Los Angeles and didn't really want to lose a day on shipping.

Haha Ryan. I'm finding the very same at the moment.

Gotta bolt. Picking up supplies to shoot something fun Saturday morning.

Nice !

Phil, when you have some time, could you please shoot some motion with the 50mm 1.2 ?

Thanks !

I'll be sure to shoot with it tomorrow on my little adventure Stefan. I'm very curious too, especially wide open during the day with deep ND. I already know it softens up the image a whole ton. Guess I need to upgrade to Leica Summilux-Cs or MPs at some point!

Here's a useful image from the same vantage point switching between resolutions (modes) to see the effect on the field of view. These were captured with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 @ 11mm.

There's a fascinating jump in detail for me between 3k and 2k. 3k I don't mind and I feel I can work with. Looks pretty good. 2k is alright too, but I don't think I'll be shooting at 1k if Red decides to update the firmware with that mode. To much resolution and FOV is sacrificed for my tastes.

Doesn't really effect me that much. I purchased the Scarlet X for 4k motion and 5k stills. 3k I can scale and work on to get it closer to 4k. 2k is a bit trickier.

I'm still experimenting. I've haven't even had the camera for 24 hours yet.

Thanks Phil and don't forget to eat ! You need to be in good shape tomorrow... :-)

Wooden Camera Quick Back has arrived. IDXs are flying in, just about an hour away now.

Just "hacked" together a light weight rod setup. It's horrible, but my rig isn't done being built yet. It'll do for now.

Phil,

Congrats on Skully! It was great meeting you at RED Irvine yesterday.

Good to meet you and your family Dave! So strange that I received the Scarlet Back Cap from you just a few days earlier and randomly running into you at RED Irvine while you get a RedMote. So crazy.

Congrats! - I am really interested in how 3k holds up at 48fps.

Thanks,
Peter

Thanks everybody. It's been a very, very busy day. Minus a quick meeting I had nearly an entire day to do a bunch of tests with the Scarlet ranging from nature light, artificial light, and low light. I have a lot of thoughts that are just swimming around in my head. It's been a lot of fun. People keep wanting to come by and check it out.

Because I'm waiting on the DSMC Side Handle to arrive (as are many), I promptly went out looking for a V-Mount option. Luckily Ryan at Wooden Camera just released the Quick Back. I picked up the Swit/IDX V-Mount version and luckily that arrived today! I don't own any V-Mount batteries just yet, so I needed a visit from the V-Mount battery angel. Got 4x IDX Endura 10s with the VL-4S Charger and POOF! I'm mobile. (Until Thursday that is!)

The other frustration I'm facing is that I'm having a custom rig built that's not done yet and frankly I want to actually shoot stuff at the moment. So I looked around my gear graveyard and grabbed a Bogen Manfrotto Quick Release Plate and a rod clamp from my old Easom Cage. Tapped a hole through the aluminum plate and came up with a very temporary solution (and also extremely lightweight too) so I can use a follow focus on LW 15mm rods.

Here are some pictures of that quick hack job of a rig with the Wooden Camera Quick Back:

I was told by Red I was first in the US to have the Al Mount, but I certainly know that can't be true. I held one on November 3rd. Either way, I'm extremely happy having the Scarlet in 2011. One thing I noticed was different on mine was the Canon Al Mounts are anodized, which is nice.

I'll be gone virtually all day tomorrow and Sunday because of this whole holiday thing. But I'll be back up and running with some cool stuff if all goes well. Until then, happy holidays!
