  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Scarlet vs BMC

Hasn't materialized? Are you talking about the speed booster? They were in stock January 14th, a couple hours after several reviews came out about them on Jan 13th. I bought one as soon as it was available and it arrived January 18th, so they are definitely available. I have the EF-NEX speedbooster sitting in front of me right now on my FS700.

Not talking about the speed booster, just talking about Bloom's sensationalism in regards to new gear, especially that purported Digital Bolex which hasn't panned out as well as he claimed. He's not a source I'd go to for accurate claims or tests, I'll wait until someone actually does more 'scientific' tests on the new adapter to see what the positives and drawbacks are. We know the idea is an actual adapter now, we just want to see if it's claims stack up to all the hoopla going around.

You'd figure this adapter would be crafted with a decent pedigree of known manufacturer glass (Canon, Sony, Zeiss etc...), but it's not, and it's something that needs to be put to a proper test.

This topic is a trap.

You've all been warned :)

Can someone walk me thru this adapter ..isn't the more glass between your sensor & the subject the more likely hood of image loss /distortion...right?

So why is this piece of glass any different ? Yes I get the principle it shrinks the image circle making it brighter but I cannot believe you gain something for nothing. But apparently it does !

Bloom has a prototype. There's prototype reviews on other sites too like nofilmschool and eoshd and they seem to come in same conclusions.

So now if you want FF it's better to use S35 size camera and Speedbooster adapter than FF camera. You get same but sharper FF image and you gain about one more stop in speed :D

I'm new to this forum and been seeing a lot of your posts, they're pretty sketchy. But I've been wondering if you have any links to things you have personally shot? With any camera lol

Thankfully I didn't post any more information about myself or my projects. I would feel somewhat insecure if I had done so after receiving death threats from a bald, tattooed, leather vest wearing russian who calls himself "Hitman".

Here's some decent recent footage captured by the BMC camera - http://vimeo.com/58045466
That looks stunning.

I doubt people here will toss any death treats at you. All we try to do is to learn from each others experience. Then it's quite frustrating when you make all these camera vs camera statements without you showing a single frame of your own findings.

That already happened and person in question didn't get any punishment for it or other personal attacks he made. PM me if you need more details. Lets keep this thread Scarlet vs BMC like the title says.

I don't have BMC yet so I'm unable to show any footage. I will share my findings when the camera arrives.

Soooooo that's a no? Never shot anything that we are able to see?!?!? Lmao...

Never shot anything with BMC.

I'm not posting my work here and the reason is stated above. Learn to understand what has been written before replying.

Josh, give it up. It's starting to get really out of hand. You have become the neighborhood thread closer. Nobody can make a decent inquiry into the differences between a scarlet and a BMC without you posting poorly informed suggestions. You are toying with people lives if you don't realize, people make important life decisions with the production equipment they enquire about. Desist from answering based on specs only. Please...

Read the closed thread starting from my first post and you can too realize who are the ones making poor claims and who gives valid points to the arguement: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread...C-fightclub!&p=1128317&viewfull=1#post1128317

Specs only? There's tons of BMC footage already in vimeo and RAW footage can be found at bmcuser.com. Toying with peoples lives... umm what?

Do you remember that Jarred started and owns bmcuser.com?

Hah - I think we should take one of two paths with this... either completely ignore him, or egg him on relentlessly so he gets banned again. LOL (For me, it's the former.)

I kept myself from replying to this thread for far too long.

Look the BMC frames are amazing but I can tell you that almost any decent camera with the right operator/creative can make any of the subjects used look like heaven.

I too fell in love with the Big Sur frames until someone else posted the same type of video using a Canon DSRL.

You can check all the footage's done professionally and personal stuff from the Scarlet, Canon, FS100, FS700, GH2 etc and you will find great work and bad as well.

Do you know why you see a lot of decent BMCC frames, cause no one posts crappy ones.

But actually I've seen some but they are relegated for problem posts about issues they found in the camera.

Which honestly is mostly user error.

Anyways, funk up this topic if you want but please don't bring your crap to the more relevant posts.

You know what Im talking about :P

You're comparing three movie that take place on earth to a film that looks like a video game set in outer space? I think you can leave the sensor size out of the equation.

From what I've seen, I prefer the look of BMC to Scarlet. I like 16mm, and have no problem with smaller sensors. This large sensor obsession is a bit tired. Moonrise Kingdom, Black Swan and The Wrstler look like cinema to me. Prometheus looks like a video game.

Understood, but you also made some claims about the performance of the scarlet, it would be helpfull if you uploaded r3d's from the footage you have problem with since people here are very helpful and very willing to share their knowledge and explain what the issue is if the camera does not preform as it should.

Thing is, you dont need a Red to make great movies. You dont need Raw to make great movies. You dont need S35mm sensors to make great movies. You don't even need 4k to make awesome, future-proof movies.

And this is coming from someone who owns multiple Red cameras!

That's quite an odd comparison your making since all the three "small sensor films" you are mentioning where shot to look as much as they possibly could like "large sensor" films. In other words they used a lot of long high speed glass to compensate for small sensors.

For prometheus they did the exact opposite, It was all about the 3D experience, as 3D does not handle a short DOF or long lenses that well, it was all shot quite wide and closed down.

Personally I would have loved if Ridley had went the other way, skipped all the 3D stuff used a similar setup as he did for Alien. Basically if he would have used panavision anamorphics and an epic then I'm sure then the result, for me at least, would have made the Black Swan look like a student film in comparison.
