  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket

While I'm thinking of it...

Any chance of SCRATCH coming over to the Mac since the RED ROCKET will not only offer the REDCODE acceleration, but will have proper SDI / DVI outputs to drive studio monitors?

I'll tell you what, I'd be kind of annoyed if I had just purchased a scratch system a week before the announcement of the Red Rocket. Not that they are the same, but still...

I second this question but what will Scratch matter when this comes out? If you can grade realtime 4k in Color... heck that solves most of the problems right?

This statement indicates that you don't really understand what Scratch does or represents. Color correction is only one module (and not the primary one). Comparing Scratch to Color is like comparing a car to an engine.

i guess because of the past marketing of assimilate a LOT of people bought it because of the Color Correction module....maybe thats the problem, dont know.

Well many people look at Scratch for realtime 2k playback & the color grading module... give Color the capability of realtime 4k playback... well then those same people will not look at Scratch anymore regardless of the other features. Final Cut Pro combined with Color in 4k realtime will be enough of a substitute.

inmho i think to do a real good cc you need three things, which will be not present even after red rocket is released.

1)a class A monitor
2)a class A CC Tool/finishing tool in the $$$$ range (conforming, datamanagement, titling, stereoscopic, RT, editing)
3) a class A Colorist, who knows his shit (log, linear mixes, Color spaces) and is creative as hell.

but in 5 years, who knows

enough of a substitute? huh? you must be joking. Maybe for a DEY GUY (Do Everything Yourself) but not for a post shop. Color needs a HELL of lot more than a 4K processing board to come close to Scratch.

That I will agree with. The point I'm trying to make is that RED Rocket will make Color a "2)a class A CC tool".

I would say that they will if they have any serious data management or conforming needs - which they will if they do a reasonable volume of work. They will also look at it if they ever deal with file formats other than R3d - which nearly everyone in the professional end of the business does, and usually in the same project. Or if they have actual deliverables to create. Since Red has not released any real information on the Rocket, other than news of its eventual existence and target price, it is difficult to say just what it will allow any specific, individual program to do, and what additional equipment might be required. At NAB, the general feeling was that for a program to do 4K playback with color correction to any type of 4K display on a Rocket equipped system, it will also require an Nvidia Quadroplex box. I don't know if that's true, but it is true that nobody outside of Red currently has enough information to really know what a specific program like Color will be able to do with the card installed.

And let's not forget that Assimilate has already announced that Scratch will work with Rocket the day it's released. As a matter of fact, they're the ONLY company that has made such an announcement.

So FCP & Color with 4k real time in what way will that combination be deficient when compared to Scratch?

All that I know is that companies like Tangent Devices will be the ones reeling in the dough... not the software makers. Well RED too. :-) Lots of people like myself with about 25k will now enter the market. They will look at buying a control panel and RED rocket... that's it... shop open. Hopefully Apple will increase the feature set of Color to give it more of a punch. We know that will happen. So the market is wide open now.

what about adobe doing a combo....

including
2k output speedgrade

yammi yammi rumours rumours

a nicer controller (comparable to quantels neo) that doesn't only look static and outdated, with some nicer displays built inside of it ( like we've got some in the audio-post world), and an application that works hand in hand with RED would be nice, Assimilate should really overthink what they could offer and how many customers they could reach in the long way...

Tangent CP200 with OLED would be awesome enough. Heck the way things are moving so quickly... I'm scared to spend money on anything except for the RPP. If I buy Scratch some new software development and hardware combination could wipe my investment out. If I buy a CP200 a new control panel could be out that's incredible better... albeit I doubt it. Software is really my most fear... especially after seeing what happened with Final Touch going from 25k down to $0.

Careful there...you don't want to be perceived as someone with "extreme sense of entitlement". ;-)

It's been posted on the Surprise thread. Maybe you can find it? I am sure Jim and Graeme would appreciate being able to checking it out. I can't believe I didn't go.

So will there there be an LA screening?

Roberto, the posted reel is the RED 400 (NAB 2009) reel. The RedRay reel where I thought I saw some stuff is the RED 300 (IBC 2008) reel. Jim has stated that this reel is under rights issues, and they are not able to release it.

Hopefully we can work something out.. I'd like to prove myself wrong as much as you guys would...
