  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Seems to me one could use an ExpressCard to PCIe adapter to mimic the laptop connection. Here's one possibility:

Although you haven't really specified exactly what your interface is..

We have had made a custom cards - both for Express34 and PCIe. The solution will of course work on both Mac and Win-PC's, but the physical design of the chassis and the cable-less solution is specifically designed for the 17" MBP. Then again - You can directly instal Windows on the MBP...

I thought that might be the case. I like the idea of a standalone, rack mountable unit that can be randomly used by multiple hosts. The only issue would be connections, so that the host can be easily changed, hopefully via either a patch bay or some kind of matrix or router. I look forward to seeing how you've implemented the connection side of things.
 
The RED Rocket icon is a " powered by " logo for vendors integrating RED Rocket into their product that uses the RED Rocket hardware cards.

Just to be clear since Peter hasn't put his own logos on this box yet, this is not a RED product. RED has had no input on the ID of this box, this is Peter's Design as he mentions that was inspired by our design. It should be a great RED Rocket solution by the Deryl Group.

I wonder... Why is the PCIe limited to 1x? I guess you looked into all ways of solving this. but was there really no way to make the PCIe connection going faster but still having it going slow for the laptops? I mean like have the speed limited in the card for the laptop instead of in the box itself and let it flow free when in a workstation?

Maybe not possible and I guess there's a good reason for things beeing as they are. But if it had been full speed in PCIe-card "mode" this would really have been interesting for us. =)

Is the RR in full speed av 4x or 8x?

The problem You are facing here is that the faster PCIe connections will cost a lot more to integrate for the portable version (we are talking at least additional 50K in R&D cost alone). We are working on a 4-lane version for the two cards that will do exactly what You are saying, but expect it to be a lot more expensive. It should be out before the end of this year...

Just to clarify what I was saying in the post #1143 (and Jarred mentioned above) - this is not a RED product. Even the image clearly says "Coming soon from DERYL Group". I want to avoid any confusion and want to make this point very clear...

Our logo and the final product name are going to be on the right side of the unit, which is not visible in this render. We are still finalizing the actual product name. The one we like most so far is "LaunchPad™" for the RED Rocket, since it serves both as a pad for the laptop and to "launch" the RED Rocket... If You guys have any better ideas - shoot...

I've seen it first hand it's build solid just like the Red One. Its ready for some serious heavy duty on location work. Although I'm trying to get him to change the name to Launch Pad instead of Pocket Rocket because it won't fit into any one's pocket I know of!
 
I think RED ROCKET is lot more associated in this manner and I do not believe that has "put off" any customers. Once again - the "Pocket Rocket" is just a code name - this is clearly stated in the image. Please do not read too much into it...

Peter... It looks like your case is milled from a solid piece of aluminum. I think it will make for a great portable device... Very rugged. No room for screws to wiggle loose... Nun of those after market predesign cases for your products... As I would expect nothing less then excellence in your designs.

I know which one I will be buying...
