  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

We currently work at 2k from the 4k source. We do a hardware transform to 2k and it seems fine. Mind you we have lots of disk and CPU to deal with the decoding of the r3d.

That's on 30" monitors playing out to a 709 review CRT to really check color or a DCI projector if it's for film. When 30" Dreamcolor monitors come out we'll view in DCI space on them...

I'll also be happy when DCI is an option along with the log, 709 and redspace options.

would it be possible to use two RedRockets in one machine to make it faster?
Maybe not now, but in the future?

I'm going to go out on a limb and say... Yes, or at least it seems to make sense.

In the log files generated by ROCKETCINE-X, There's a line that reports the number of RED Rocket cards installed.

heh heh heh....

Funny how, "heh heh heh..." might turn out to be the post of the month. :-)

Multiple RRs in one system... that would truly be something to behold.

Let RED get one working before tease them too much about getting multiples working in a system.

I mean...you want FASTER than realtime playback? Say what? :-)

Seriously...awesome product, but it (meaning software) definitely has work that needs to be done before we worry about multiple units.

I had assumed multiple Red Rockets would have been the ideal way to scale up RT playback as the resolution increases. Can you imagine the size of the tower to get real-time 28K playback?

realtime stereoscopic is not too much to ask, I think. Once the SDK is out I defenetly see a need to have two RR in a system, I would even say it's more important then RR in a Laptop.
Even for a 2D project it makes sence to have more then one RR. If I'm grading a job that has dissolves I would need to debayer two clips at once. And why should we be limited with realtime? Rendering a feature takes two hours, thats way to slow :)
I'm not saying put all the effort into making muktiple RR work. Of coarse, make sure one works fine.

But the 'heh heh heh' sounds good

any word on when the REDRocket Quicktime engine might be released? will that be all we'll need to have FCP 7 accelerated by RR or will Apple need to update FCP? (boo).

Really hoping the Log&Transfer (native) workflow will finally come into it's own once this acceleration is available...I've got an entire feature film of native R3D quicktimes that has just ground to a 15fps-ish crawl thanks to FCP 7 and Kona 3 :-(

Deanan,

great job to you and all that made this possible! I have it my rocket up and running very smoothly on a new mac pro with a Kona3,ati card and a 3ware raid card. Fing fast! Drilled holes in my raid cards mounting bracket to get the hdsdi cables out. Thus not voiding the warranty on my mac pro.

I use FCP but have a few clients that want MXF files for their avid. I have been using Jamfuze by jamie to get them Avid MXF files because it makes there import time Real time. They tell me DNX imports are not fast enough?! Somthing like 1.5 to 1 ratios. I know, they are greedy. Oh well.

I would love to be able to give them MXF files with my rocket! Any chance this could happen? Also I can only do DNX files in 175 flavor. It would be cool to be able to at least give them DNX36 to offline with. More flavors of DNX comming? batching? Edl conforms?

Other than that I just started laughing to myself when I first got this up and running! So used to watching frames count down in clip finder and Red Rushes! No timed renders yet but it's real time or fatser!!! Also I love that I am able to scrub and see playback on my monitors in real time from the R3d's!

Thanks! Just wanted to share my joy and thoughts for the next vers. of the software.

Oh yea.... it seems to freak out sometimes and not show the next clip I am loading from the browser below. To get it back running normal I have been hiding the app or double clicking on the top of it to put it in my dock then bringing it back up. This seems to show me the next clip I am highlighting in my bin of clips below.

Someone's probably asked this, but RED Rocket™™ is going to speed up transcode to RED RAY's codec, right?

Definitely yes in that RedRay is an RGB codec and thus requires a debayer, which is what RedRocket does (at blinding speed).

Whether or not the Rocket will provide any horsepower for the subsequent encoding step of RedRay is unknwon (although I tend to doubt it).

Hi Brook, internal raid to FW800.

it would be faster other way around.

Since 10-bit uncompressed is large as 127MB/sec, in order to get faster conversion, you need a faster RAID to achieve better frame rate.
