  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

$3,000 was always my "Pro line" price perspective - the same with Apple. Their top-end pro machine always came in at $3,000 stock. Only recently did they reach to $3,299. Until the last revision:

The top-end iMac is $2,199. A top-end Mac Pro [processor speed upgrade only] is $5,899.00.

Something's wrong...

I hope we see a real update with the next round of machines. Something with some real expandability... not three slots. I can put a zillion gigs of RAM in the thing, why not the stuff that matters to me?

Hell, a Magma box with 4 slots costs about $2,600. Might as well pick up an extra Mac Pro for that much money. Whoops! I did.

Grumble grumble off topic RED Rocket™™™™™™™ rules shutting up now.

Well, to those that haven't seen the Rocket in action, here's a little video I took at a prep today on my phone.

I transcoded some old ER footage just because I know that footage is safe for public viewing at this point.

The R3D file is reading off of one of my RAIDs to one of my towers in this video, a 2.8 with about 16GB of RAM. The file is 2017 frames [if memory serves]. When I'm playing the clip on the screen, that's with a curve and basic RAW development settings changed [ASA, color temperature, etcetera]. I let the clip play about a quarter of the way, then export it to 1080p DPX files.

Enjoy...

Cool - that looks to be about the same througput we had at REDucation.

It's definitely fun to see Finder bombarded with fresh ROCKET files.... :willy_nilly:

wow...thanks for the video Brook.
Which mac config is the best deal right now?

Cheers

Thanks Casey. Now all we need to know is 6K, 9K, 28K?

Casey, where did you get the RT 25fps 5k from? Cause if you did from the beginning of the thread I am wondering if it is still so because they haven't touched on it again.

From me.

Jim

That is so funny.

A tip for some of you out there, when you come to REDuser, you can click on the name of a user and select "Find More Posts by," which is a great way to just read what Jim and Jarred and Ted and a few others have to say, it really helps cut through the noise on these boards. That way, you can read through 90% of what matters in about 10% of the time.

Poor Brook and Casey, being all helpful. I've been so busy playing with the RED Rocket™ that I've forgotten to post recently about it.

Find someone in your area with a Rocket and ask for a demonstration, the new speed is incredible.

So I take it you know about timestamps also.

Again, I am just trying to make sure that it is still so because that was said a long time ago.

5k RT means a lot to me, because it is one of the many things that need to happen in order for me to feel I can take the leap and film my first feature on Epic-X's on January 2010. The cameras and new workflow will only be a known by the rest of by for about a month or two at that point.

I hope my incessant pestering isn't to big of a nuisance to Mr. Jannard and other people on the forum. I am just very exited to shoot on RED's 2nd generation of Red cameras, anyone with a brain should, but we are cutting it close.

No worries, I understand the anxiousness.

You sure that the Epic X will be out by then? That's risky man.

Maybe I wasn't clear, and if so I apologize. I should have asked Jim directly: Has the 5k workflow been tested with RED Rocket yet?

I am sure it has, I just never know how to ask my questions in order to maximize the chance that Jim might slip and spill the beans.

Thank goodness there is Red One. :001_wub:

It is really a matter of being able to figure it out as soon as it is released, so I am hoping for the first 50 to be shipped by October giving us three months to figure things out.
