  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Quicktime is a bitch from hell to get working fast and right. We aren't happy with the current speeds so we're doing a rocket optimized implementation that will be way faster. The new implementation which will be here soon will be the one to benchmark.

Deanan, just don't let this bitch consume you - LOL. I am sure you will unleash her fast and furious back to us - Lim

If I had a nickel for every time I've heard that QT was a morass....

I can do 4k full debayer to ProRes 422 to SD (1024x576) in real time with the Rocket.

And that's on the slowest Mac Pro ever made.

Without the rocket I get less than 1 frame per second at that level...

The Rocket is amazing and getting better every day.

Not sure if it has been discussed... But could the Red Rocket be used to compress video to mp2 or h264 if you write the software to do it? Is there an SDK for it?

Got mine but Rocketcine boots, then all I see is broken debayer pattern. Works that way in two Mac Pros at this point. Hope the board is not faulty.

The board's probably fine as the boards go through rigorous QC and testing before getting shipped. Most of the time it's a setup issue. Email me with your system profile and a screenshot and we'll figure out how to get you going. (deanan - a t - red)

In our testing we found The Red Rocket likes to be in slot 2, above your GPU. Other slots will work depending on which model of MAC you have - but I spent an hour pulling my hair out on a last gen MAC until I moved it to slot 2.

Mark,

Thanks, mine started showing picture with slot 3, though but with x4 connection. I started off with slot-2 first but didn't work.

tom. you can use metafuze for that already....

Hi Chris,

Thanks, I used MF2.0 yesterday - great app but a 7:1 transcode ratio to dnxhd36! I'm sure I could get that figure down with some playing but would still be hard to compete with RedRockets ability to crunch through R3Ds.

The ability to have native MXF out of RedCineX and RR would amazing! I mean would it be possible to have it as a chargeable plugin so that us Avid users pay for the benefit?

Cheers,

Tom

i am unable to do grading while i render in background, once i start rendering one clip, everything grinds to a halt, im afraid to do more than three clips at a time.

is this normal or should i be able to continue smoothly in the program while it is rendering in the background? i remember reading jim post about the glory of grading while the shots are rendering out, but i'm doing pro res hq, not dpx, is this the reason for my troubles? is my computer not set up properly, or is the program just not optimized for this yet?

- transcoding to 1920x1080 creates a strange stuttering movie which scales the image maybe 5 or 10 percent larger every few frames (for the duration of one frame) looks like a crazy zoom in and out constantly/stuttery, ever since i have been transcoding to 2048x1152 and the problem has gone away

- will the next version of rocketcine let you click one button to "render all" ?

Zak, is your RR running at x8 speed? Just a thought.

I may have missed it, but what generation Mac Pro are you using? If it's an '06 Mac Pro, how do you have your slots / lane assignments configured?
