  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Jeff, we weren't successful making it work with 06 Mac pro with x8 for Graphic card and x8 for RR (the second from the bottom config. in the Expansion Slot Utility).

Then with the 2.8GHz 2008 model didn't work with Slot 2 then switched to Slot 3 it worked but with x4 speed.

I wasn't successful making the 3.2Ghz 2008 model work neither.

Only once worked on 2.8Ghz 2008 Mac Pro on Slot 3 but now I can't get it to work. Way too tired. Going to sleep.

i am unable to do grading while i render in background, once i start rendering one clip, everything grinds to a halt, im afraid to do more than three clips at a time.

is this normal or should i be able to continue smoothly in the program while it is rendering in the background? i remember reading jim post about the glory of grading while the shots are rendering out, but i'm doing pro res hq, not dpx, is this the reason for my troubles? is my computer not set up properly, or is the program just not optimized for this yet?

- transcoding to 1920x1080 creates a strange stuttering movie which scales the image maybe 5 or 10 percent larger every few frames (for the duration of one frame) looks like a crazy zoom in and out constantly/stuttery, ever since i have been transcoding to 2048x1152 and the problem has gone away

- will the next version of rocketcine let you click one button to "render all" ?

There's still some tweaking we need to do there to tune the render/grade balance.
No render all in the next build. Probably the one after.

Just a request if it has not already been mentioned or planned but if Red is planning an external Rocket for the Macbook Pro it may be a good option to offer a separate connection to the Mac Pro Pcie and breakout box also.
Not sure if this is possible, is on the cards or has been suggested, but just thought I'd mention it.

We're testing different solutions but don't have a recommendation on the best yet.

I have experience in distributing Magma in Japan. And from what I experienced, I'd recommend RED to customize PCIe expansion box and include the features below.

  • Secure way to place the MBP and PC Laptop above the expansion chassis, so the ExpressCard won't come off during the operation.
  • Include the battery unit even covers the power to the portable computer and the portable RAID, even include the portable RAID using the similar chipset as Caldigit VRmini.
  • Add hub for USB and the bridge for Firewire.
  • At last, with special bag with Cool Oakleyish design.

I've read this whole thread and have a few questions as I consider buying.

1. Will the card work with 5K footage from Epic?

2. If I convert all my footage to ProRes Files or DPX or other to edit can I still monitor that footage via the cards HD SDI to a broadcast monitor for color corrections.

3. Does After Effects and PP work with the card at this moment?

Thanks

5K/24 is the max spec that has been announced as of yet.

Not now, but the card does have the pipes in place to function as a normal output card... so when the guys are able to write it into the card, yeah!

No application other than RocketCINE-X works with the card as of today. That said, the SDK is on its way and it should be very easy to bring apps up to speed once it drops.

Well, to those that haven't seen the Rocket in action, here's a little video I took at a prep today on my phone.

I transcoded some old ER footage just because I know that footage is safe for public viewing at this point.

The R3D file is reading off of one of my RAIDs to one of my towers in this video, a 2.8 with about 16GB of RAM. The file is 2017 frames [if memory serves]. When I'm playing the clip on the screen, that's with a curve and basic RAW development settings changed [ASA, color temperature, etcetera]. I let the clip play about a quarter of the way, then export it to 1080p DPX files.

Enjoy...

This question is important to me also.

If Epic-X is out as early as this fall it's requisite that RED Rocket™™™™™™™™™™™™™™ is usable with footage from it.

Yeeha!

I know that the RR is just in it's infancy but I hope that it will handle 5K footage in a similar manner. I'm kind of in a wait-and-see mode with regards to taking delivery of my RR until I have a better idea of its potential. I really *won't* be able to get the RR, then upgrade to Epic-X, and then have to upgrade to a Rocket-X version right away. :001_unsure:

Thanks for the reply.. great to hear!

I guess what I'm wondering is.. how well does it work with 5K? Is it just able to keep up, or will it be a powerful solution?

Will it be a powerful solution? Compared to what? Unless you have a DVS Clipster laying around, there is no faster way to do 4K or 5K R3D decodes that I know of unless the Pablo or the Baselight 8 ($$$$$$) can do it.

If somebody can prove me wrong - bring it on.

Well, it looks as if RED Rocket kick some serious butt with 4K. I'm just saying that with Epic-X right around the corner I would hope it will rock just as hard!

Jeez, I hope I'm not offending anyone. I thinks all this stuff is amazing!

What's the point of making wussy towers?

What's the point of making wussy towers?

Not to second guess the estimable Mr. Jobs but with laptops as powerful as they are these days and the iMac on the market - wouldn't it make sense to build kick ass towers for power users. Add a couple hundred to the price but give us plenty of slots, beefy power supplies, fast buses, plenty of connectivity options, eSATA on the mobo, etc.

Build a tower that will rock the perennial Mac strongholds in graphics, photography, motion media, design, etc. A machine that can save even one hour a day is worth a $5,000+ investment for many businesses. Just sayin'
