  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

It ultimately comes down to how functional and flexible the SDK is and how developers choose to incorporate the power of the RED Rocket™™ into their applications.

so in Apple's case what does that mean? no, or at least a year? Snow Leopard integration still underway, really depends on RED's influence and Im sure its all NDA. But seriously. When will they decide its worth it?

Apple's huge success of late also equates to diminishing returns if the bean counters get involved. WHen you start making billions.. millions dont mean as much and cost versus customers comes into play. (renenber they are publicly traded and its all about earnings) Iphones are much easier to make/sell. Content site with HUGE profit share is also where they print money. Why develop this for 5000 to 1000 users? Ok maybe more for Scarlet but you get the point? I'm starting the buy the rumor I just discredited in another thread. Why should Apple care? (pardon pun)

And its not like Apple opens up FCP development like they do iPhone apps. So we are dependent on that integration into Color. Will that ever happen?

Just curious, Im still excited for Red Rocket. Transcoding, etc. sounds killer.

Im talking about its integration into Color so it does what Shawn Nelson
hopes it does.

Not necessarily so. The card has the ability to do real-time (or faster) full quality debayer from 4K. There is no reason that the images derived from this can't be loaded into a common frame buffer or even offloaded to a GPU for other color transformations or grading operations. It ultimately comes down to how functional and flexible the SDK is and how developers choose to incorporate the power of the RED Rocket™™™™ into their applications.

Actually I meant like that!!
But what happen when the image is back from RR to color ang Gpu?...it happen that color is not able to apply layers of grading in realtime because does not support poetfulg gpu...

Redrocket basically I guess will transform RD3 in a easy to playback codec (like dpx having a raid)...but after that color engine is not realtime (until they modify that..)

They're not DVI ports physically although they do look similar. They're high bandwidth, high density ports. Each one breaks out into two DVI connectors or they connect directly to the break out box.

Don't pop a standard DVI connector on there; you'll damage them...

They look like DMS-59 connectors.

The bifurcated cables that come with the card must be DMS-59 to dual DVI-I cables.

I would like to think that SCRATCH will support the RED Rocket™™™™ real soon. In fact, I think I remember some comment about it already running on the Rocket hardware a few weeks back. If SCRATCH does go this route, allowing for the use of the RED Rocket™™™™ instead of the Quadro SDI, perhaps we could hope for a Mac version of SCRATCH???

The RedRocket does not take over the functions of the nVidia card. In fact, the decoding of red footage (which is all the redrocket does) doesn't even happen on the GPU, its all on the CPU. So in short, the RedRocket does not bring us even a baby step closer to Scratch on OSX.

As for Color, again, the RedRocket only handles R3D decoding. Yes it does pass the decoded material to a subroutine but once Color has it in a 'decoded' format, then it's left to it's own devices to perform any realtime grading. Color currently cannot do real time in 2k let alone 4k. Scratch cannot even do realtime 4K although they have demoed it working on a quadroplex.

I'm even getting about 4:1 DPX render to a firewire drive! For faster than realtime renders, you obviously need a RAID or wicked fast SSD that can handle the speed of RED Rocket output.

I disagree. We've been told before that the reason for no SCRATCH on the Mac is the lack of support for the nVidia SDI option. There is no reason the Rocket can't fill this gap when used in tandem with a powerful GPU. As it, the RED Rocket™, does more than just decode RED footage. It still has the ability to display to a monitor and apply real-time color curve and LUT data. It is supposed to be flexible enough to incorporate into applications like Color, FCP, Adobe CS4, etc.. Of course, there's still the issue of whether or not a port of SCRATCH to OSX would be financially sound or a lucrative thing to do.

"pass the decoded material to a subroutine". Huh? How about we reserve final judgement until we get our hands on the SDK... Never mind that comment makes little sense anyway.

The RED Rocket™ allows decoding AND real-time color operations in ROCKETCINE-X and REDCINE-X, no reason it can't do the same in other applications. It all comes down to what is enabled through the SDK and how application developers choose to use it.

I can grade 2K real-time in Color on the machine I'm sitting at right now, BTW.

so what are everyones card / slot arrangements? i have a kona Lhi and an ati 4870 and a sas raid card...

do i even need the kona card or can i just go out of the rocket into a television with a DVI to HDMI cable? does that work and are there gamma issues? when i go out my computer graphics card into a TV with a DVI to HDMI cable there are gamma issues its treating the television like a computer display or something, when i go out the kona card to a television everything gamma related is fine.. im hoping the red rocket does it like the kona and i can even get rid of the kona.. if that isnt the case can i feed the rockets output into the kona and then go into a television via the kona's hdmi out?

Da Vinci Press Release

Da Vinci Press Release

“Resolve 6.2 dramatically accelerates workflows, improves performance, and shortens project completion times for commercials and motion pictures shot with RED cameras by eliminating the RED-to-DPX file conversion process and enabling colorists to grade the full dynamic range of RED files. da Vinci’s new Resolve Digital Powerhouse hardware system accelerates color grading of the highest quality .R3D files on R-series systems, and da Vinci plans to offer color grading for other native digital motion picture files, as well.

Before releasing Resolve 6.2, da Vinci Systems tested the new software and Digital Powerhouse at post-production facilities in Singapore and in Stockholm, Sweden, with impressive results.”

There are over a million Final Cut Seats out there. thats not 5000 people.

There are over a million Final Cut Seats out there. thats not 5000 people.

1,000,000 FCP users.

But only 5000 definite RED one users, and this assumes that all 5000 RED owners buy a RED Rocket™ for which to run the updated plugin on.

And that's assuming that all of those 5000 RED owners use a Mac and FCP, which they don't. Many use PCs.

So really, to implement RedRocket and the new SDK in FCP, Apple may be looking at 2000-3000 users, realistically.

Apple gets no additional benefit out of implementing the new Red SDK into FCP since those people are already using FCP anyway. If the plugin is developed and given away for free, then Apple only loses money, and no company is into losing money without some sort of benefit in the end.

I, personally, would pay for this plugin from Apple if that would give them incentive to make it.
Let's say Apple sold the plugin for $20 x 3000 users = $60,000.

For that money, Apple would probably implement the new Red SDK into FCP soon.

For no money.......we'll have to wait for them to get around to it eventually...

Yes, even Final Touch, with the right configuration was able to get real-time (most of the time) color correction.

REDRocket with Color 1.5 should definitely help out when dealing with R3D files, but the big hang up I see with Color is the rendering/output time.

But to be fair, even Scratch doesn't render DPX grades in real-time.

I guess I've been looking at the REDRocket as a way to improve the dailies workflow with some better color tools than REDAlert/REDCine. It will be interesting to see how things go.

That is pretty amazing. Now all we need is FW 3200 to be released after they're done with the politics. Pretty great way to transport rushes on the super quick. :}

EDIT: Now that I think of it, rushes wouldn't be in DPX format....but then again, there is always room to do something new. :}

Are you sure about tht Jeff? I'm pretty sure that I've read here that Apple's direver implementation for the NVidia cards didn't support some of the necessary API's Scratch needed.

Also, although the Rocket will do color/LUT data in real time for REDCode, that's because it has the hardware capable of ingesting/debayrinng .r3d frames in real time. They have the hardwre support to apply the matrices necessary to do transforms as part of THAT process.

It's an entirely deifferent matter to hand the card RGB frames instead, and expect it to do that as well.

I have no inside info here, and who knows, perhaps it may... but I'm pointing out that just becasue the Rocket has been designed to do real-time ops for one type of data in no way implies that it can for another.

RR to laptop connection through ExpressCard 2.0?

RR to laptop connection through ExpressCard 2.0?

Yes Please!
Denan tell us if RR can speed up a laptop or Not (because of the 1x lane limitation..)

Even half res/med decode would be great...

Thanks

g

Maybe ExpressCard 2.0 introduction could solve full integration of RED Rocket™ with Mac/PC laptops.

great great !!!

please a big picture of the box..... and if possible of an open box :skep:

thx

Here You go...:

Nice pics, Peter. I see you have chosen to suffer the path of the GTX285 along with me. Hehehe... Damn they need to release a driver update for that card like, uh, yesterday.
