  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

The new MetaFuze v2 when released as both 8 and 10 bit uncompressed formats in it.

Michael

...And, from the sound of it, the RED Rocket™™™™ should be giving the system uncompressed RGB files back from the bus, so then it's up to the software/CPU/GPU to encode to whatever it can. So, as long as you have the SDK to send the R3d's to the RED Rocket™™, what comes back will be a vanilla RGB stream. Does that sound about right Deenan?

Heh heh. Every time I edit and save, another set of tms. Cool!

Hi Michael

That is fantastic for some workflows but without a pull capacity its not much use for me/many... Or have you sneaked in XML pull capacity ;-)?

Is it Red or Avid that needs nudged??

kind regards

Correct.

What will be realtime if I change settings in RSX file. So all changes can be done and exported in realtime from 4k to HD?

Yeah, it's all realtime...debayer, color, curve, colorspace, gammaspace, iso, etc.

so is this :violin: for Quantel, Mistika, Assimilate, etc?

no, because the API's are open to grab and integrate
into ALL workflows. Home Desktop and PRO. (mobile...coming)

Not unlike what Francis Ford Coppola predicted in the late 1980's

However, as I see it, the Big boys with big toys (i.e hardware, software patents, etc) should continue to thrive
if they drop gear/software costs and in return get more support subscribers
at near $30K USD a year, those boys will do just fine

thats my 1.4 cents USD adjusted for the recession

Certainly not, because what Deanan is referring to is the controls that are exposed by the SDK. These are basic RAW conversion parameters, not a toolset for creative grading. That requires separate control of low, midrange, and high values in all three color channels, secondary color isolations, area isolations with tracking capabilities, the ability to stack these corrections on multiple layers, the ability to change color spaces for different deliverable formats, the ability to integrate viewing LUTs for those different formats - do I need to go on? Saying that this board eliminates the need for grading tools and colorists to run them is like saying that Red cameras eliminate the need for lighting, filtration, and a director of photography. I hope you don't believe that to be the case ....

not what Im saying ... I said NO and that I suspect those companies will thrive.

but if the next rev of Color (theoretically) becomes more powerful with RR
CAVEAT: IF FCP 3 is what we all hope. (big if right now) then the democratization ) of post (talked about at Reduser VEgas is that much closer... that's all I am saying.

Competition is always a good thing

not trying to hijack this thread with a color argument either
but YES, colorists, not tools, create art, Agreed 100% i'm just saying
the hardware/software costs at the entry level is light years
from where it was when the Panasonic DVX 100 came out (the camera that
I believe began the democratization of cameras. i.e content acquisition)

at the end of the day it sounds like a killer tool to help artists at all levels create better and faster images and that's a good thing.

But as camera prices continue to drop as features improve dramatically... why cant we expect to see something similar in the high end post world?

Our intention is for REDrocket to enable faster R3D workflows from the high end on down and see it being highly complimentary to Assimilate, Quantel, etc. as well as FCP, Adobe, Vegas, etc.

Um color 1.5 still won't have the ability to handle and considering that they still haven't fixed how they deal with log space... the reality is color can not take a movie across the finishing line i.e. if you get it sold. Now commercials... well lol the professional community has moved way beyond expecting a simple grading tool. Unless you're working in a full blown compositing system, you won't even be able to enter the C game here in LA.

One concern though is I know in all of my boxes to get things hooked up to the SDI Graphics card, 8 Gb Fibre, Video Output cards, and Internal raid controllers...PCI express slots are running mighty slim. Any testing with PCI Express expansion chassis ?

So where does Avid DS fit in your world?

Once we see the SDK to Red Rocket, we will be able to have a better idea how this will fit into a DS world. But as I have mentioned here several times - how an NLE takes the debayered signal and works with it will indicate how much value one can extract from the card - a simple dissolve is two streams pulling at the same time. Timelines get more complex than that pretty quickly. So for dailies creation or ability to decode and create final output files be it DPX, etc, it could be quite interesting. As an integrated part of an NLE it remains to be seen. Unless everything is straight cuts. ;)

And again, not having any additonal information than what I read here, I could be completely wrong, and I reserve the right to be. :)

You have inside info on the next FCS 3 and Color, Shake, Motion updates? Really?

Yeah we live in Portland, Oregon and as we mostly finish to 1080P or DVD (commercials and indies) so its hard to justify a high end finishing system when we do so little film out...

Deanan just confirned what I was saying... RR will help speed up all workflows up and down the line... again, I think thats a good thing
as the technology gets more reachable... it still comes down to the artist...

but I would argue that the cost of entry was what has resulted in fewer senior colorists and that more and more talented artists will emerge as
the access to these toolsets become more affordable (ideologically speaking of course)

According to our records, you have ordered one or more Mac PCIe power cables for the RED Rocket™™. We have determined that this cable will not be required to use a RED Rocket™™ installed in a Mac. We will be deleting this from your sales order.

There we are. External power supply now?

Looks like they have eliminated the need for auxiliary power completely. Or at least I hope so.

Deenan, as things grow closer to actually shipping, might I ask if this thing will work upstream or downstream with something like FCP? With the relatively small size of R3d media, sending a number of streams to the card would seem easy enough. Do you think it might be possible at some stage for the host app to tell the card which portions of each given R3d clip to process or is it a full frame kinda deal? Also, in an NLE situation, is there the possibility of the card delivering a stream back to the preview window (Canvas in FCP speak) as well as an output to a full screen image (in sync of course)?

I know I should just wait a couple of weeks and see for myself but... I just can't!
