  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Just thinking ahead, what will the card be able to do with higher quality files, like the 5k and 6k files that the Epic produces?

Yes. we won't know details like max fps until we have final baked footage from scarlet/epic to optimize with.

just to clairfy,

so the worlflow would be?

4k debayer to 4k, scale to 2k

edit in realtime (1-3 videotracks?)
grade in realtime (1-2 layers?)
while also monitoring though redrocket
then choose export codec and format (2k, 1080p etc)
hit render and wait xx hours depending on your cpu
......

thanks for clarifictation

Real time editing 4K with 2K/1080 monitoring, Real time print to tape..... enough for me.

To DVD, to Series of Files, to uncompressed... again clash with the laws of physics :undecided:

Quality of debayer?

Quality downsampler to 2K/1080 RGB?

We have the pieces on order so we will test that implementation. I personally am hoping it'll work :)

Any further news on testing with a MacBook Pro and an expansion chassis? I'm thinking a 4 slot Magma chassis with a RED Rocket, RAID controller and 4 drives in would be a nice setup, but there's no point me ordering one if it won't work!

Also apologies if this has bee answered already and I've missed it, but will the RED Rocket be a VOUT compatible device for other apps, or will it only display its own decoded frame buffer at its outputs? ie can other apps do further processing of the SDK's output, and then display the result using RED Rocket?

About time Apple got the hint, 4 slots, including the Graphics card slot, is not enough !
There was a time when they made Macs with six slots !!!
Please, once again.

Our Mac pro does not have any slots available...

Cheers,
Damien

Methinks you're getting a little too greedy there. ExpressCard will give you a single PCIe lane.

No reason the Mac Pro doesn't have 6 slots. None what so ever. Just make that case an extra 2" taller. Done.

And while they're at it, even though the '09 Macs are all PCIe 2.0, all 4 slots in the current design should be x16. WTF is up with this x4 nonsense?

Who's does? :banghead:

The magma expansion box with a Red Rocket in it is a very interesting thing for me as a DMT, as currently I have to live with slow-mo footage. Being able to play back HD in realtime from an R3D file would be magical, and so I am hoping that the card functions in such a way that it will be able to do output using only a x1 PCIe interface. I'm not looking to reencode things (that's for whoever is doing dailies, though I guess I could probably run Rushes, but that's another story entirely), just to be able to check if what looks like a focus buzz actually is a focus buzz..

edit - I put in my request for a name change! Hope nobody is too offended by my not real name ;)

Hello,

I don't think you are going to be using this on a MacBook Pro with an expansion box. As cool as that would be it's beyond the Express Port's capabilities.

Best,

Another question about the internal power cable...

While I know the testing isn't finalized and I hope a solution is found for those of us who are already using both 12V power connectors inside our Mac systems... I have to ask about the cable itself. Does the $20 just buy us a standard 6-pin power cable or is there something special about it? I've got 4 or 5 of these lying around as it is... extras from swapped out Mac video cards mostly, actually I have two more on top of that now since my GTX 285 card came with two more and there were already two of them connected to the ATI 4870 in the system...

it should be the same cable Jeff... one side is normal 6 pin the other side is mini...

That be it, Jarred. I have a handful of those already. $20? Really?

Still very interested in more test results and solutions for power if our video card already uses both aux power connectors. I don't see Y-cables being a good solution, that could definitely overload the ports on the logic board, I don't know what Apple's exact specs are for those connectors, but the GTX 285 is a power hungry GPU. What if we pulled power from the second optical bay via a longer cable?

Mine? No wait, I'm on a PC....

Yeah, yeah... Looks like my Rocket card will be in a PC to start I guess. Thankfully I own a few of those too. Actually I'm about to build another, just having a bit of trouble finding a case and cooling system I like that is also as quiet as I like.

I'm not expecting it to work as fast as it would in a desktop machine, but I'm interested to know if it will work at all. I'm not familiar with the technicalities of PCIe architecture, but I assume as Magma make a 4 slot case with an ExpressCard interface that it is possible to put 4 cards on a single lane. Normally I have an eSATA card in the ExpressCard slot of my MacBook Pro, and I'm looking for a way to add a RED Rocket to it without reducing drive connectivity options.

Jeff, I'm looking at this watercooling setup to make my PC quiet:

Obviously for the rest of my preferences, just check out my Monolith thread for case recommendations etc.

Is the card "flashable"? Would be nice to upgrade the card to support stuff like the new color science and any future version the comes along.
