  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Quad Charger + RedVolt XLs

Look great. Looking fwd to them hitting the store.
Any plans to be able to mount just one XL on the rear without a battery module, like an XL quick plate?
jas

I'm hoping that the dual will exactly look like that! though this will kinda be a module, won't it? Just an "end" module. Last piece in the chain.
I'm so much hoping for that, don't want to invest into more battery solutions...

Same here, hoping for an "End module" or plate with cable and Lemo that takes 2 Redvolts or one XL. Surely would like to stick with one battery system.

Just wanted to photoshop the power back module for fun. And although pictures are difficult to use as a reliable source, it seems that the form factor wouldn't match.

Though I wouldn't mind too much for an end module, it seems the width of two redvolts plus the needed support and release buttons around them would be wider than
the standard module/brain width. Maybe they could move the release buttons to the side, but still at the moment this seems unlikely. Just try it.

Especially if you have a quad module, just turn it 90° and see for yourself and do report back. Maybe this isn't as much as I believe it would be.
Maybe this could be done if they are top loaded and not front or side loaded. Maybe all this doesn't matter, because if the last module on the cam would be a bit wider,
who would care? (except for us designers) ;)

I'd still want one ;)

I still find it really funny, that now that the quad modules are out, so many are selling it. If I could I'd grab one... :(

Of course I understand a lot of people had to invest in different battery solutions but the argument that it increases
the size too much I do find quite amusing... remember the red one? :) nobody complained about the form factor there... hehehe.
I know that the width of the REDVOLTs changed since the early renders, but still the EPIC + QUAD POWER + I/O Module should still be
about the same length as the red one without batteries ;)

Just as we bought so many small batteries :(
Dimensions for the charger would be great to get before we start to cut foam again...
Also the size for the XL's but I guess we can figure them out by looking at the quad module and think about 1.5 volt thick.

The question is, when the quad charger hit shop I think there will be quite a few single battery chargers for sale... So then buying many of the single chargers used for low price and rack them up nicely in a case with one power input (for all) is probably giving the batteries a slower / more healthy charge and maybe for a lower price.

Like having a case with 12 volts and 8 single chargers would be quite nice.

I think the main reason people are complaining about the size of the extended modules are because they are spoiled by the small form factor of the camera. The great thing about the modular system is that you don't HAVE to have the quad battery module on there all the time. If you're running around take it off, throw on the Side Handle and an outrigger handle (which I love) and you're ready to go. When you're shooting longer outdoors things, or in the studio, put on your I/O module / battery module / focus module and you've got a pretty well equipped camera.

I don't like the idea of an "end" plate XL module because I like to have my RedMote on the back, but others may disagree. Actually when I think about it, it does seem kinda nice for run and gun.

I also just bought a bunch of extra regular RedVolts. I've got 10 RedVolts and 5 chargers. 8 RedVolts and 4 chargers with the Quad Module will get you through the day without a hitch. You can go all day long without turning off the camera. With the XLs, it's even better.

I will be shooting my short film for the next three weekends so I will have more info about charge times and run times then.

I'll also get dimensions and weight tomorrow for those of you interested.

The reason I complain about the size is because it's stupidly huge. A v-mount adaptor and brick weigh less and are half the size and run longer. They lose on every account except for hotswap (which is accomplished with a side-handle. We are definitely spoiled :) but V-Mounts just make more sense to me.

Yes I agree that it is a bit big, and the module adapter adds to that. Compared to other cameras in this range though, it is still fairly small. V-Mount is definitely a great option, with proper power outs and longer run times. But perhaps RED will soon release a power out module. I decided to go the RED way since I didn't have any previous AB/V Mount power solutions. So far I'm happy with it :) I guess everyone has different needs and that is what is great about these cameras, everyone can conform them to their needs.

Everyone has an opinion... and if u like something one way or another.. at least we give you the option :)

Any note on how much the XL's will cost or when they will come out? I have seen the update list, and these did not appear to be listed. When was the XL REDvolt and quad charger announced? On the Recon thread? I guess I've missed all these new modules...

Also, let me get this straight... Assume I already have a side handle, then I purchase the quad module ($2000 with adapter), now $200 a REDvolt (5 x $200 = $1000). This setup would get me around 2 1/2 hours? Vs. Cinema Oxide backplate and battery plate for $500 and a battery @ $200-300 which would get me more than 3 hours of shooting and is smaller than the quad module? This is right? If so, what is the reasoning for the quad module?

It lets you still charge the redmote and use other modules. It's the most ideal solution and pros who buy it help subsidize things like scarlet. If you want the absolute best you can buy red accessories. Otherwise you can get accessories that work almost as well much more cheaply. It's a money/time tradeoff.

Thanks Alex. I personally just don't see it. $3000 vs $600-700... Couldn't you just keep the battery in the side handle for charging the REDmote? If you stuck a battery mount on rods rather than the battery plate, you could use the other modules as well... like the red one quick plate or red cradle.
