  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO Mattebox

Dear Jarred,

What is the weight of this nice piece of accessories?

Which is why it's important to post details on new products on RED.com instead of running the risk of them getting buried in long threads :-) That way it's also easier to update specs as they change. ...

... Jim & Jarred, would you like to speak about a simple. state of the art, future proof & real time solution to tackle this ... :sifone:

please PM, if so ...

A great way to prevent vignetting is to buy your filters at the largest diameter you think is reasonable -- a bit wider than your largest lens at the minimum -- and get a step-up adapter for every lens in your set.
Just a reminder that if you do this (I do it too) you should understand that there's a possibility your lens hood won't fit over it.

I carry a range of 77mm screw-in filters for my Canon lenses since most have that diameter thread, with a 72mm step-down ring for my 50mm f/1.2L lens, however I must then forego the hood that ships with it. Not a dealbreaker but something to be aware of, that's all. Third party screw-in hoods can mitigate this, though I haven't bothered personally. Other options include a Joby-style flexible arm with small flag on it to shade the lens.

It's pretty hard for one mattebox to do everything you could ever need. As much as I'd love to reduce the size of my camera package when I rent, I always end up needing the 4x5 clip-on for handheld/steadicam, the 4x5 studio mattebox, and a 6x6 studio mattebox for grads and the big Optimo zooms.

I agreed David,

however I have successfully eliminated the need of at list one MB, and now use
the MB28, for the 4x4 & 6x6 filters while will be using the RPMB for
all hand held Run and Gun work ;)

Would love to se a picture with the Scarlet Fixed with the mattebox!

Just so everyone remembers - or in case you missed it, Jarred said the following about the matte box and Scarlet.

Yes to working on Scarlet fixed.. its a bit ridiculous, but it will work as we are making a ring for the fixed lens.

And made it clear they are planning a better solution for the Scarlet...

Yeah.. little camera with big mattebox on it. don't get me wrong, its still pretty badass, just a little insane. We are making a smaller mattebox for the Scarlet fixed remember, which looks a little more like they belong together.

I missed that post. Hope Scarlet will indeed look badass with the upcoming mattebox! Thanks Terry.

Well, some of us needs to compensate for our small... primes.

Mass Quantities!

Will they be available to purchase at RSH when they go on sale at Red.com?

Lastly, I hope those boxes are compostable;)

I had ordered 5 of them, lovely mattebox...
