  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO Mattebox

How do clip on's handle small lens's such as Nikon SLR primes? Iv'e only ever used Matte boxes with rails. Im thinking smaller lenses would struggle am I right? So will this be upgradable with a rail attachment at some point?

Clamping on to a still lens directly is not a good idea as it does indeed stress out most of them. They're just not built for that kind of application. However, as Marc said, if you use a screw-in adapter which is what some of them are doing (I think Genus) then that helps to properly implement them. However, the safest route is to go with rails as that will take the weight off the lens. And if you don't do a lot of filter stacking, the best way to filter is screw-in. I add a 77mm sunshade and that works for a lot of situations. The problem is when you need to stack you can start to run into vignetting.

Also, with still lenses some of them telescope which makes using a mattebox even more difficult. Internal focusing is your best friend in those cases.

Jarred does it again

Jarred does it again

hahaha just in the nick of time. I was was just about to pull the trigger on another mattebox when suddenly this appears before my eyes.
Jarred thanks for saving me from getting another piece of crap I would've had to sell later when I got my Scarlet and Epic.
For now, while I wait for my Epic, I'll be using this mattebox with my Nikon d7000. Yippy ka yay!

Jarred wait I saw the same trick in Indiana Joes shot with a mirror to make it look like they go on forever lol

They look awesome.

That's a matte painting... In fact, it probably my favorite matte painting EVER!

There is a great fold out version of it in the ILM book.

How great would it be to have an old school glass matte painting framed and hung in your living room!?!

Fits our 5k lenses no problem no vignette.
So, that is the surprise at NAB

I am a big proponent of Red and it's cameras. That said, no rotating stages!? For this reason alone I am not interested. I can't rotate my streak filter and other specialty angle dependent filters? 100% no go for me.

So, I guess Rob should have gotten the icon Greg sent to Jarred! :attention9ha:

For Scarlet Fixed?

For Scarlet Fixed?

Since I don't have a ton of experience with matte boxes, I'll ask one overarching question: Will this matte box be a good fit for the Scarlet Fixed?

ha ha i love the guys that dish it but cant take it...

love even more the guys that point to anamorphic flares and praise how great streaky filters are, even though they are anamorphic flares and not streaky filters.

Anyways.. for the guys that are asking for more stages, we will make them, but you need to remember with a compact mattebox the more trays you put on the further away from the lens you get.. so you will start vignetting with a 3rd stage on this mattebox around 35mm. If you shoot above 35mm all the time.. no problem. But its something to be aware of.

are the flags carbon fiber as well?

 Not sure I understand that - or if any of it was aimed at me - but I guess my comment was pretty obtuse anyway.

So, Jarred, any thoughts as to my question about this matte box being good for the Fixed Scarlet? Maybe? :Angel_anim:

It will work on the fixed Scarlet if you step down the rear clamp ring far enough. Probably 80mm or somewhere about there??

I'm hoping we see a proportionately smaller mattebox option for the Scarlet line. Those mini primes could use 3x3 filters and probably have room to spare.

not aimed at you at all Terry.. :)

Yes to working on Scarlet fixed.. its a bit ridiculous, but it will work as we are making a ring for the fixed lens.

the whole thing with 2 trays ( no flags ) only weighs 646 grams...

and yes paul the flags are carbon fiber as well.

Awesome Jarred, you rock :)

11-16 might be pushing it. Especially when shooting 4.5~5K... I'll give it a try, though. :)

Here's the only thing this Mattebox is missing:

Everyone should keep in mind that this is a lightweight MB in the LMB-5 range. As far as I can tell it's not meant to compete with an MB-20 or other complete MB solutions. As Jarred mentions, once you start to add stages this becomes a different beast and may not be the ideal solution at that point. In terms of polarizers, perhaps RED will make a polarizing tray for it. Even if they don't, I think the advantage of this system is the weight and being able to get a couple of filter stages in front of the lens, and it's slightly cheaper than an Arri.

The LMB-5 with 2 trays AND top flag only weighs 568 grams...

But it's much more expensive of course, once you add all those adapter rings.
