  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO Mattebox

I was under the impression you guys welcomed objective user feedback, but next time I will keep my mouth shut. I apologize if I offended you in any way.

Im not offended.. but your original post was not constructive, and a bit insulting. Which I am fine with as long as you dont turn into a girl when I respond. Something you should learn about me... If you come out swinging, i'm going to swing right back.

We are all family here.. so don't take it personal.

Fringe is not shot on anamorphics - besides the streaks are usually diagonal on that show, or vertical.

Doing this in post is A: time consuming/expensive to not look cheesy B: Will never look quite the same, no matter how hard you try. Digital filtering in post has its place, but it is not a real substitute for optical filtering, which is why many DPs still use optical filtering (including David Mullen) despite deep and full knowledge of the potential of post.

Pretty sure Fringe uses a lot of post embellished flares. Can't find the interview though.

The earlier posted example was *definitely* added in post.

this has a few advantages... of course the addition of stages (rotating or not ) if needed.. and the ability to add a swing away / rod support down the road.. a bit more modular than the LMB 5.

ooo, modular rods... modular is really nice. That's a huge benefit over the Arri(s).

HAHA LOfreakinL.

(Nothing wrong with girls of course. Love 'em, myself. More should be in this industry definitely...)

Peter and Rob, many of those streaks you see are artifacts of using an anamorphic lens, not a filter. The top image you posted, for sure -- you can tell because the out-of-focus background is stretchy. And I know they shot Star Trek on anamorphics. Not sure about the other ones though. That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with throwing some streaky flares in there, if you want to give it some style.

You're right. Star Trek was shot with anamorphic lenses, and that is precisely why you are getting those foreground light streaks. However, many DPs use streak and star filters to get a similar (but much cheaper) look. That look is being used in a million music videos right now and ... for the most part ... they are not using anamorphic lenses.

The second picture is from "The Fringe", and they shoot here in NYC. They definitely do not use anamorphic lenses. Some of that effect is filtration, and some of it is added in post.

However, as I said in my post ... my main concern would be a polarizing filter which is A) ... much for prevalent on film sets and B) ... needs to be rotated and dialed in.

Don't forget you can rotate the whole matte box, in a pinch. I know, it'd look kinda silly, but might be enough for most purposes.

This is very true, except when you are using wide angle lenses. We just had that issue in Florida with the Arri LMB-5. Luckily, Abel Cine Tech FedExed us a rotating filter tray similar to this one.

Jousting over what filters you can and cannot use in a matte box is not very constructive.

Obviously, this matte box in its current configuration will be a slightly heavier, but much more durable competitor to the Arri LMB-5.

When they offer a rotating stage it will more than likely compete with the Arri MMB-1. If you want a clamp-on matte box that currently has a rear rotating tray, you can buy an Arri MMB-1.

If you want multiple filter trays and/or a swing away option you can get an Arri MB-20II ... or an MB-18 ... or a MB-14, etc. That's what many of you own now anyway.

Perhaps Red will continue to add modular options to this matte box and it will eventually compete with the MB-20II. Ever since Oakley, modularity has certainly been Jim's modus operandi.

This is obviously a very cool looking product. I believe that Jarred calls it "badass". There is no doubt about it. It's probably tough as nails. I would more than likely be placing an order for one myself, had I not already spent $14,000 on a (soon to be delivered) Bomb EVF, a (soon to be delivered) Red One SSD side module and three (soon to be delivered) 256GB SSD drives.

However, this matte box isn't going to be everybody's cup of tea, and that is okay. It doesn't need to be.

If someone expresses a reservation, or a suggestion, they are not calling anyone's mom a fat ass. They are simply expressing their personal and professional opinion. :001_smile:

I don't often say it... but we are so grateful for everyone's participation here on Reduser. Our program is better for it. Plus, it is way more fun to have a community that we can interact with on a daily basis to keep us pointed in the right direction.

We have learned a lot from all of you. Our program has evolved because of you. Your suggestions have influenced what we do.

This is an extremely difficult program. We appreciate everyone's patience. We are late because we had no idea what we were doing and how difficult all this actually would be. Trust me when I tell you that we have built a small army to solve all the problems in an effort to deliver a camera that exceeded anyone's expectations. We want to make you happy.

We are not Sony, Arri, Panasonic or Canon. We are a small group of people dedicated to delivering what the others could not. No easy task. Everyone here is working on fumes. The amount of effort is hard to measure. All of it is an effort to make a big difference.

Without a customer base... none of this is possible. This is the moment where we thank you all for your support.

Jim

100% more than fair enough. I apologize if I sounded abrupt at first - I did not mean to. I also meant what I said - if I were not the rotating filter whore that I am I would have already made a deposit on what looks like a beautifully designed and extremely inexpensive piece of kit.

Did I miss it? Is there a picture of these in use on a camera?

Oh and Jarred, why not have at least the top flag be included in the kit? That seems pretty standard. It seems this MB is kinda going toe to toe with the Oconnor O-Box. Does that seem about right?

How about you grab an EPIC and turn it on 5K @120FPS and then drop one of these onto the cement floor from say 10 feet and post that footage?/

PRETTY PLEASE JARRED?

Fringe uses the Optical Flares plugin, and the beta was used on quite a few shots in Star Trek.

Clip On. 110mm, 114mm, and 142mm rings included.

Will there be other optional ring sizes? Curious about adapting to use with Canon lenses for lightweight mode on an Epic.

I love all the carbon fiber.

Anyways.. for the guys that are asking for more stages, we will make them, but you need to remember with a compact mattebox the more trays you put on the further away from the lens you get.. so you will start vignetting with a 3rd stage on this mattebox around 35mm. If you shoot above 35mm all the time.. no problem. But its something to be aware of.

I suppose that is a 35mm on Epic (5k area) correct?

And will we be able to remove the first two stages and replace them with the new stages once they ship?

yup.. 95mm is coming next... although im not sure about mounting this to a plastic canon lens?

Hi Jarred,

Awesome product, and I'd like to stop purchasing the LMB-5's no more in the future.

Just a few questions if you don't mind..

1. 80mm and 95mm rings available to purchase?

2. Are you offering both the 4x5.65 and the 4x4 filter stages?

3. Most importantly.. when will I see this beauty on Red.com? :001_wub:

Cheers!

Don't forget you can rotate the whole matte box, in a pinch. I know, it'd look kinda silly, but might be enough for most purposes. I think with the add-on rotating stages, it might be a nice compromise between stripped-down lightweight and everything-you-need.

That's funny, I thought Joseph was criticizing the other guy for his unfunny response to your post. I mean, come on guys. We're in the film industry here. We're not dealing with Japanese businessmen. I don't think anyone is above some harmless penis humor.

Obligatory razz: Everyone who knows you knows your junk works? What kind of movies do you make again? ;)

Also: Yeah, the Red Rock Micro can be a pain.

When I read that I thought of a couple ways to respond, so I listed them below.

1. If I did make those kinds of films you can bet that they would have amazing production values.

2. I don't think I have to tell anyone here that if you want to make it in this industry you have to be prepared to do things you never thought you would.

3. I think it is a safe bet that I don't shoot porn (nobody wants to see that stuff in 4k). :)

Anyway, I am amazed that the mb only weighs a little over a pound, and as soon as I get it, the red rock micro is going on ebay or I will just keep it as a backup (I have been using it with 5ds and p2 cams with 35mm adapters for a while and am just tired of it). Also I would love to see a picture of the matte box on a scarlet.
