What is the status of the RED Prime Lens set.

I seem to remember March/April being the delivery date, could we get an update.

Will the lenses have T stops and will they have Witness Markers?

Yes, they will be T-stop and witness marked. We are delayed due to the complexity of the project. But we will show prototypes at NAB (I think).

Is it too late to ask for the 15mm f2.8 to be scrapped in favour of an 18mm f1.9 or something?

Way too late right?

Oh well.

Will they be internally focusing as well? I remember last year's [VERY EARLY prototype] 85mm focused externally.

And are you guys really hooked on that 15mm lens? A set of lenses without an 18mm is tough to swallow. Unless you're trying to give a wide/normal lens to the 2K/3K crowd, there's really no point to a 15mm lens without an 18mm.

Am I the only one who feels this way? Or have we just not kicked and screamed enough yet?

Everyone has different needs, but I consider an 18MM less desirable than a 15MM.

You can add a 10MM and 12MM to the list if you wish!

Good shooting and best regards,

- Brook this is a Director of Photography decision, not a technical assistant decision I am afraid - so I do recommend that you save your uprising for another time mate!

- I would prefer a 15mm over 18mm - also - as I do fancy the 3k and 2k recording formats and use them more than I foreshadowed I would -

1. Be Nice to Brook. I've hired him on the last few of my Red shoots and he's great. We DP's only see our own shoots, and make everyone adapt to our working and creative styles. Dit's and AC's get to see how lots of different DP's work and I've always found it worthwhile to listen to the good ones.

2. The Gap between 15mm and 25mm is huge. It's like skipping from 35 to 75mm. I hope that those that think it's OK really know what they are asking for. I think it's a HUGE problem with the proposed set.

3. Yes it would be nice if Red or someone makes a reasonably priced 15mm, I'd buy one in a second, but it needs to be at least a T2. But this is a totally different issue than having a functional set of primes. Maybe we should be asking for the prime lens set and a wide - not a set with a missing lens.

4. If there's no 18mm or similar I would NEVER buy the Red primes and / or NEVER rent your set. Probably many other working DP's feel the same way. Possibly some will feel the same way once they try the proposed set. It's not like there are no other lens options, but of course more choices would be very welcome.

Lens Wisely.

Perhaps you misunderstood:

As a DP, there are certain focal lengths that I feel are essential within a set of lenses - the 18mm is one of them.

Furthermore, in a set of [presumably] T2.0 lenses, a single T3.0 lens is out of place.

So in the RED set, I see four matching lenses and one very questionable addition. Rather than going with a focal length that most would consider "standard" at a matched speed, they have elected to go with a fairly nonstandard focal length at an unmatched speed... leaving buyers with an incomplete set of lenses.

Yes, you're right, it isn't a "technical assistant" decision. But I didn't see any technical assistant asking for a focal length change in the first place.

I'm with Brook and Matt a 100%.

Let's have real set before going ultra wide and slower.

Did you just try to educate BROOK?
:w00t:

That's too funny. . . . Mate

I'd rather have a 14mm T2 then the 18 T2 then go up etc.
RED has a good tele range but nothing at the wide end.
A 14mm is important for many corporate movie shooters. Especialy when you wanna shoot in 2 or 3K mode. We need some wideangle solutions.

I dont wanna rent lenses all the time.

Thanks
Tim

A classic set of Super Speeds / Master Primes starts with 18mm and ends with 85mm. All the focal lenghts are balanced to serve standard situations best, hence standard set of primes.

15mm is an extra non standard lens, a wide angel with a certain "language" one might want occacionally which definately is not part of a classic set.

Leaving out a 18mm is a mistake. I would never by a "set" of SuperSpeeds without a 18mm but with 14mm T2.1 a to fill the "gap" - just for compatison...

Funny that the Ultra Primes skip the 18 mm too.
