  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED, Please Stop Shipping the Quad Redvolt Module...

I can't even sell the Quad batt module and module adapter )both 100% brand new) bundled together for 1,600$. That's gotta say something about these.

Your probably right... but hey, these are the guys who gave us 5k 16bit raw @ 120 fps in a form factor just a little bigger than a Hassy. The more I think about it, the more it actually could make sense. If there is, as I believe, PCI-e connecting the modules together, then it is at least conceivable that external access points can connect to the bus. Pin 1+2+3 power, pin 4+5+6 data etc. The hot swap part is almost certainly a no-go but Epic boots more than fast enough as it is. This would also allow cheaper mini-modules to accept the worst of multiple insertions and protect the more expensive "mother" module. Still not likely but maybe for the future. Personally I think those prematurely selling there quad battery modules are fools.

Fools, maybe not - but I do think they may be jumping the gun. Especially when you consider a lot of them are selling their module adapters as well which are required to connect other things. (Pro I/O module anyone?)
But come on guys? If I spread the discount I got (Stage-3) through all the parts in my package, I'm paying about $850 for the module AND the adaptor. If I assume the price I'm paying is only for the brain, I still get a discount on the current retail price AND i get PL mount, touch screen, 2x REDVolt, travel charger, REDMOTE, module adaptor, and quad battery module FOR FREE!
Then to turn around and expect people to buy that your cost on the module is the full 2 grand and complain that RED is making you buy it? Craziness I say, craziness.

For all those peopel who want to get rid of their battery module & adapter & cant sell I will happily pay $250, send me a PM if interested.

And we would all happily keep ours if it only cost us $250. I don't know what your point is.

And please take the feedback from the Pro Battery Module into consideration with the design of future modules. Not having power outputs is a pretty major oversight. People need to be able to power onboard monitors and FIZ kits, etc.

What scares me is that since we have seen so little of the Pro I/O that it could very well suffer from oversights.

I can understand why Red wants to keep Dragon specs top secret, but consulting the Red Community on stuff like modules could help strengthen products to make sure they're filling the need they're suppose to.

Very good point. I actually like the Quad Mod; I'm just baffled and a bit frustrated by the lack of any aux power out. But I think I'm going to like the Dual Mod even better, and I expect I'll be able to get my hands on one of those a lot sooner than another module adapter, so for now, I'm keeping the Quad and the adapter. (and maybe buying some Velcro to attach batts for the aks.)

Once again, I'm not questioning how good a deal the Stage 2 package is, and I'm fine with accepting it as a package deal, but I did just pay an invoice from Red for $2250 for the Quad Module and the Module Adapter, and my BS Rep did inform me that I was required to take delivery of the module, so you can see where these "crazy" cost calculations might be coming from.

With the same form factor as the RedVolt it could have a variety of connectors for dc power distribution for motors, monitors, recorders etc. Need D-Tap? Take 1 redvolt out and insert your 3 port D-tap mini-module. Need Hirose? Need 4-pin XLR? There is a mini-module for each.

Wouldn't it be cool if the battery module IS the I/O module and everything you might need (hd-sdi, EVF/LCD connector, audio, camera power, DC power distribution, wireless!!) is each a separate mini-module that can be tailored to the specific shoot.

Just a quick and potentially easy way to give folks what they desire.

I'm curious that if the RedVolt XL actually had one or two D-Tap outlets on the top, sides, or front face of the batteries would it solve everybody's desire for power out. Several V-Mount batteries of D-Taps right on the brick. I don't see a reason that a 90Wh RedVolt XL couldn't have that.

I think on the attachment module, or an additional module you could also pop in some D-Taps and maybe other connections. That way I can see having all your accessories plugged into your rig and you don't have to unplug anything during your production day. Separate power out adapters for the RedVolt sockets is a nice idea, but kinda gets in the way of hot swapping and additional power. (I'm picky though as I want 3 hours of up time for my style of shooting)

The real appeal for me with the QuadVolt Module is for use with the RedVolt XLs and going to and from shoulder setups. It's a sexy solution and puts the weight where it should be.

There's so much we don't know about what could be on the way. Personally if I got one in the mail, I'd hold on to it for just a bit. Even if your power solutions are already well in place.

Yeah, the irony is that most of those who are sellers are also the ones pointing out the faults of the item.

But the main problem is that almost every Epic owner at present also has one of these coming, so no need to buy. New Stage 4 owners are the best market with the Stage 3.5 and Scarlet owners the second best market. But while negativity works in political contests, I don't know if that's the best way to sell.
 
Thanks for the reply Brent, I absolutely understand that it was part of a package, however, when we agreed contractually to the package there was no mention of backorder waits. These things not shipping with our cameras practically forced us to find a v-mount solution... so now, when we get them, how can we justify using them after spending money on the v-mount solution? I'm just saying you have to consider the circumstances here. In my mind, I agreed to a stage contract thinking that when delivered, my camera would be operable. That was not the case (still isn't, I don't have my redmote, everything I shoot is 24p default). I of course understand if you guys make us take shipment of these units, it just seems that we could all save everyone a ton of time by allowing some sort of exception (in my case since I have not paid for the unit, I still give RED the full price of my stage upgrade and then you give me some sort of credit using whatever 'bundle' equation you'd like). Again, thanks for listening.

Sorry, but this line struck me as hilarious. Red without backorders?... have they ever been out of backorder? Always late but worth the wait.

If you are saying you would only power your camera, your Epic, with volts, I would seriously scratch my head. What RED has given it's early customers quite frankly is a number of gifts, though you may call it discounted it's still something along with the Epic X they didn't have to do. There comes a point where things go from valid complaint to sounding super spoiled. The companies is giving amazing value you a fuss is being had because the units can't be resold at a profit? Even if that's not the case it's how it sounds from the outside. Brent was nice enough to point out, again he didn't have to, that you may in fact be cutting off your nose despite your face... You don't know what is coming, neither do I. I am all for free trade but if folks don't want your stuff you can't get upset. Take a minute and look at what your tech can do because apart from like I have said before being 100% in the tank for RED, I know that things will only get better. If not I hear Alexa's accessories are only what is it, 5 or 6K for a EVF?

In any event, there is a plan, be patient.

I think the question we should all ask ourselves is "Would I have bought this camera without receiving the quad battery module included in the Stage 2 and Stage 3 package?"
 
I mean, I guess... I was RED 1327 back in the ONE days and got everything I ordered pretty quickly.
