  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE MX - Now Shipping on Demand.

To be fair, RED is probably partly responsible the deflationary cycle in imaging, Mike...do you really think the competition would have come this far, this fast if RED had not pushed them?

No, they would not. The trickleware gang would have continued gouging us on pricing and having us on our knees begging them for features which they already had the capacity to invent but withheld - they are still withholding! How many trickleware models of Canon hybrids have we already seen? The difference is that now, the competition is forced to add features and lower pricing to keep up. RED forced their hand.

RED, meanwhile broke pricing molds initially, and is now forced to raise their prices, to keep up. This is actually logical. The competition has forced RED's hand. It is pushback from the marketplace.

They have to be able to do more, at a relatively cheaper price point, to continue to own that reputation - but all of that innovation has a price tag, as I said.

There was a window for wickedly affordable RED technology, but, until SCARLET is released, that window is closing. Your choice will be to pay up for it now or wait.

The choice to get on board, at its most affordable but also at its point of highest risk is closing. RED users were rewarded for taking a risk on a high-stakes venture. The investment has paid off.

I would add to my previous post that -- once that HDR mode is enabled on the EPIC -- that would be a logical point to increase the price. Unless someone else has something better in the works (unlikely), it will be, once again, the only game in town. Buy your $28K EPIC body while you can, rejoice in a firmware update later. Listen to others whine about price increases when it happens while you're out shooting sick HDR video. In 3D....

You have been warned.

Another fascinating milestone is the 40% price increase, set against a time where in other digital imaging markets, manufacturers are also adding features but lowering prices.

Mike Brennan

That's a ridiculous statement. What 40% price increase? Surely you're not comparing the RED One to the RED MX? Or are you comparing the RED One to the Epic? Either way, it's nonsense to say there was a price increase. The cameras are not the same, so why would you make that comparison?

A follow up question for Brent, et al. If I send my camera in for MXing, what's the turnaround time looking like now that things are caught up?

Who will buy RED one for 25 000 if I we will bw able buy Epic for the same price 27 000?

Who knows how long EPIC will take to come out?

The sad part is that getting into the RED train just got way more expensive.

And who knows how long Scarlet is gonna take to come out.

The M sensor is 3 years old, the first 1500 (approx) cameras came with a $2500 accessory discount making a 66% price increase since day 1

getting into RED did not just become more expensive. Maybe if you were thinking about a Red One MX. But look at the Scarlet and it's features. Now compare it to any camera below $10,000 ( My bare minimum fixed shooting package with a couple 16gb Cf cards is around $7,800 - unless the prices change :P) Nothing is quite like it. Nothing else offers you so many professional features in a significantly smaller package. It's better than any other 2/3" camera.

RED is easy to get into if you are passionate about what they are offering, and have the funds to back up your passion.

and if Scarlet is not enough for you, there is always Red One MX or Epic. But for the price, Scarlet will be the best bang for your buck. I hope you get on the RED train when it comes out with all of us!

Processing time quoted for RED ONE M-X sensor upgrade remain the same - about a week from the time we get it to the time we ship it.

Red One with MX is a very different and much more capable camera now than when it was originally introduced.

True. It's also 43% more expensive that the Red One with M that was sold just two days ago.

Not that I'm complaining, but it does -- for now -- raise the entry cost into RED by a lot. Once Scarlet ships, RED will once again seem cheap, but $25K for a camera body with no lens, no battery, no viewfinder, and no on-board recorder (among other things) isn't "cheap".

When the camera cost $17,500, it was still a stretch for many people but it was still -- IMO -- low enough that people felt like they *could* stretch and make it work. $25,000? Eh, not so much.

Some of the comments on this thread are just mind boggling. . .

Great to see this happening. Not only does the Red One remain the best in it's class, it still is in a class of its own. This price point is something other manufacturers just can't come to terms with. Good stuff.

So how many of those first cameras did you wind up buying, Stephen?

Regardless, you are still comparing better technology's prices with previous generations. ARRI does this too, right?

I love the "unique" perspective going on here. RED was never $17,500.. The body alone is not enough to shoot with.

RED is FAR less expensive than its comparable competition (If there is any) but it has never been "cheap". It's not prosumer "Thank God". It's all professional, and the costs reflect that.

It's not spoken of much, but I personally know a few Ex-RED owners that were forced to sell because they simply could not afford to keep the camera. They got caught up in all the excitement, all the "only $17.5k" stuff and then, $20 or $30k later, they were in shell shock. Some of these same people were responsible for renting out the camera for $300 or less per day. Not only did they throw the market into a tailspin (In their respective area) by introducing rental rates that were way too low, but they also killed any value they may have had. They did it out of desparation.. "I gotta make the bank payment dude!"

Producers are a lot like sharks (I know this, I am one sometimes), they can smell blood in the water, and a desparate owner / operator is like fresh chum!

It took about 4 months for the person in question to fall down the hole, and have to sell his stuff.

It's expensive.. In a lot of ways..

Wait, aren't you the guy who was upset about the base cost of SSD storage?

These new products are nice, but the pricing is a huge, unexpected, and painful hit.

Like many, I had to make a budget for my Epic-X very early on, I never expected current record media to dissappear and be replaced with new far more expensive media (I was a RED-Drive person).

Apparently you didn't mind expressing your perspective on the high cost of getting into SSD storage, but at at the same time, you seem to think that someone who has been budgeting for a RED One camera body this summer @ $17,500 should just suck it up -- even though the price went up 43% on the camera body overnight, without warning. And they should do so because "it's all professional, and the costs reflect that"?

Methinks you're not being entirely consistent or fair here.

None.

Arri film cameras increased in price with following generations. The spinning mirror version of the Alexa will be roughly the same as the D21 if it's ever made.

RED should make a deal with Apple to have one RED-MX with basic accessories for sale (cash and carry) at the top 100 stores worldwide. I bet Apple would do it at zero or tiny margin and RED would benefit tremendously. Like Steve Jobs said, 1 Million people per day visit Apple stores worldwide so it's like 20 MacWorld Trade Shows every day. This would be like a bunch of NAB's. :)

SSSHHHH Michael, I have been talking to them about this, don't ruin the possibility for my commission, ha ha

Help me out here Erich, is there a law that says once you say wow something's expensive you can no longer comment on anything else?

Pricing of SSDs caught me off guard when combined with the removal of RED Drives.. And you know what, I AM going to suck it up and deal with it. Know what else Erich, I can. It's going to hurt, but I can.

Would I be happier if this stuff was 10K less... Yes, and no..

Sorry buddy, but I'm not going to be consistant.. I'm going to be human.. Guess you're gonna have to suck that up too.

:)

Can't you still buy a Mysterium body used?
