  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE M-X Sensor Upgrade Program

As I understand it the last email blast for MX upgrades was for cameras delivered February 2008. Remember it's delivery date not serial number.

My guess would be Red have been fine tuning the upgrade process before doing any more blasts as from March the deliveries would of ramped up given that the Red One had been in the market for 6 months.

March 08 looks like a 500 cameras delivered month. Depending on how many go MX, from here on in the MX upgrade team are going to be busy.

So we did a Testshoot with our new MX cameras two days ago. After that we directly put the shots into a Baselight 8 hooked up with a christie 2k DCI beamer to a nice big screen. After that we startet grading. First of all I can say is, that at 800ISO we couldn't see any noise in the picture. First visible noise starts at 1200ISO, but it looks like grain, not like noise. Our cam was set to 500ISO and we underexposed it 3 stops at even that is usable if you say it should look like night. This is freaking awsome guys. When we look to the histogram on baselight at the higher ISOs the black level goes a bit more tight in the last 1 and a half stops... but it is really ok for this exposure level.
The shutter effect looks like now more a film shutter, even at high contrasts. If the clock speed of the sensor would be ramped up, it should be fine. The surface of the footage looks more organic like the old one... as of here really amazing good job on the new sensor.... so that is a big step further in digital cinematography.
We had an issue with preview monitoring on baselight with clipping highlights. It seems that baselight adds some dark pixels around highlights if you are running the "half res debayer" setting on good to get a better playback speed. That looks like this:

Would be great if Filmlight could look into this... it is really disturbing your real impression... so setting it to premium is solving the issue, but the hole image looks quite soft then.... we are testing here something out on this.... have to say, that this appears also on the old sensor footage, so it has nothing to do only with the MX sensor...
It looks like now with the custom pdlog gamma that we can go now a complete log route to the arri laser. We set proper values and applied our standard LUT for 35 scans and looked in the preview fine. We will test both routes lin and log to see the difference on the print.
REDgamma seems to be a good way to go on lin workflow. Only thing are the color spaces. REDcolor brings up a lot magenta tone. Too much for my feeling. We used outdoor a normal ND1.2 and it looks like the OLPF works out fine in terms of IR.

so far a first impression...

best,
rainer

My camera is probably one of the last to get sent in from this batch. It arrived at Red on 3/23. So by the time mine is finished they should be ready for the next batch. Will let you guys know...

Good news everyone!

My camera was only at Red for 7 full business days before being sent back. Looks like they are getting ready for a new email blast.

Well you are a lot luckier than us!! We sent out camera 176! in 9 week ago and still don't have it back. Keep getting told next week :confused5: There goes the theory of serial, when you send it in or when you orginally received your camera. Even if I only rented my camera once a week thats 9 days of hire I have missed out on. Don't get me wrong I do love Red, but I really want my camera back!!

Cheers, Chris

So I should of check my email before writing my last post. Camera has finally been sent. Yaaaaaa. I still don't get how someone can get a camera in 7 days and it has taken us 9 weeks!!

Cheers, Chris

So, any M-X cameras in London, UK?

There was some supplier issues. Most of you sent your cameras in all at once in the beginning. This was before the supplier issue. I sent mine in after the supplier issue was fixed and most of the backlog cleared.

I recall someone saying they had received their camera early feb08 and have had their M-X upgrade. I am late feb08 and have not received an e-mail yet.

So how is this "System" working then? Cams that were delivered after Damiens have gone in for the upgrade?

Eric i don't know of any MX in the UK..i had a request for one on thursday.

9 weeks is just too long too wait for an upgrade, that would cost me dearly to be without my RED for that long....wow that's crazy. If Arri had your camera for that long for an update when they said it would be a 2 week turn around, they would furnish you with a replacement camera while yours was in the workshop. I'm not having a dig, just saying that's what would happen if the time became unreasonable. If your camera is your livelihood it's like taking a carpenters saw away for nine weeks, he can't work. Unless the upgrade process starts to stabilize i will be worried about going for it.

Only cameras with invoice dates between 1.18.08-2.8.08 can be upgraded at this time

Looks like you missed the cutoff date. At least you know you will be in the next batch no matter how small a batch it will be.

How did you figure that from Damien's post?

Unless the upgrade process starts to stabilize i will be worried about going for it.

In case you didn't read Jarred's or Brent's recent posts on this thread. They now have the values they need to plug into the equation. This probably equals smaller batches for a faster turnaround.

I wouldn't worry about going for it.

yes, got confused, lots of dates, i thought from your message Curran yousaid you received you camera 03/23 but it went into RED for upgrade on that date?

I just keep reading about long wait times. It makes me worry, if it happened to me i would be in big trouble.

I really do hope that it gets back on track as i would love the upgrade. My cam arrived 12th June 08.

No worries. Yes, my camera arrived at Red late afternoon 03/23/10.

That's why I'm posting here. It looks like they are back on track.

So RED has solution to speed up upgrade i believe ? If the pace is going on like this, i'm not sure if it's a good thing, it's done a lot of damage to the user if they have to keep almost a month in the HQ.

I still dont hear any fix schedule up until today, unlike how it was during the original RED delivery with its sticky thread.

hello to all.
I've read good chunks of this very important thread, but frankly not all of it, so I beg your forgiveness if my questions have been addressed already.
Very simply, is it buyer beware when it comes to buying a used RED ONE and then using registering?
My understanding is that you can keep the Red One and still upgrade, which opens up the possibility of someone having an incentive to "keep" the Red One and in reality sell it....but first taking it off the list of upgradeable Red Ones.
I suppose there may be a minimum holding period for those who choose to keep the One and seek advantage of the loophole...
Anyways, as a buyer in the Used market, if I buy one can I simply, with proof of purchase, seek the full rightful inspection/transfer process on my own? or does this still have to bear the signature of consent from the original owner?
Also what is the time limit on these special offers and paths?
my priority would not be to upgrade now, but to have the options so that I can use them when I can afford them or really need them
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP

The solution is smaller batches, more often.

Yes, a sticky locked update thread just for RED M-X upgrade news (no comments) would be good.

I hope, this wait is quite frustrating

This thread seems to be lost with all that is going on at NAB.
However to some of us it is very important to know how the schedule is going.
What number is the upgrades up to and have they improved their delivery methods.
Seems a perfectly legitimate question, all the new stuff is wonderful, but the upgrade to MX ?

But the new question is now that we may have Epics in 4 months, will the number of people getting MX upgrades drop off? At the current pace, my R1 won't come up for the MX upgrade until October, 2-3 months AFTER I'm supposed to have my Epic.
