  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE M-X Sensor Upgrade Program

I want RED Rocket™ and I want it now. I also want to have the MX upgrade but I'm 2770.

It would be nice if some arrangement could be made.

John

Look back at previous posts in this thread, we are working on that option.

Could I pick it up at RED Day and bring it back with me instead? Or buy it from the RED (physical) store?

We do not do sales at RED DAYs at RED STUDIOS Hollywood at this time. If you want to pick up a Rocket at store in Lake Forest office, sure - but note you would have to pay applicable sales tax.

what is the ASA of M-X, as the old sensor is ASA 320?
Thanks.

ISO 800

ISO 800

I believe it's 800, but Jim has posted samples @ ISO 2000 & it's nothing short of "stunning"...

From all the opinions I've read the past couple of weeks I'd say ISO 800 is the new 320 and 2000 the new 500, with a better grain structure.

Ansel, serial number 137, is now in the hands of the mad... *ahem* Red scientists.

Godspeed brothers. Mr. Glover is ready for his close ups.

I concur. ISO 2000 is impressive, but from what I've read and the samples I've seen, ISO 800 seems to be the sweet spot. I can't wait to get my hands on this sensor and see for myself ...

Don't forget that the sensitivity of MX is the same as the M sensor...but is able to be 'pushed' a lot further with the noise floor enabling 800 to look similar to where 320 is now. One can bet that as soon as a lot of cameras hit the ground people are going to be calling it a 200-250ASA raw sensor still and the whole debate will go on as it does now. I use the M sensor at 320 protecting and will likely keep the MX at that as well if it is truly of the same sensitivity but being able to easily push it up to 800 without thinking twice will be a great luxury...and even higher when i have to.

Good news Blair. I am driving 363 down there tomorrow.

Have you shot anything with it? First impressions?

No, I believe asa 500-800 is the rating for the new sensor..
its not just a gain thing with better noise floor.. its a more light sensitive sensor

Based on the R3d's I saw tonight (even with non optimized firmware) The noise is SO MUCH BETTER it's a totally different camera. I really don't care that much about ISO, but noise quality matters far more to me. Even if it was a true 320 iso sensor, the noise patterning, or lack of pattering has me sold.

Jim has said repeatedly that M-X is NOT more sensitive, just much cleaner which allows you to lift the shadows in post. It sounds like semantics but it's not. If the sensor were actually more sensitive, then the highlights would clip faster, but they don't. That is my understanding.

Sorry Zakaree you are mistaken...so was i until i read this post

The new sensor is not more sensitive to light... it just has a much lower noise floor so you can push it further (use higher ISOs). Much less rolling shutter (comparable to a film camera) and black sun is fixed.

Very much agree:)

BTW - they put this uber cool Mysterium-X badge right above the big R-E-D on the operator's side :drool5:

WOW; that was my secret dream!
My camera is on it´s way, can´t wait!
