Future Upgrades

First off, amazing stuff with the M-X Sensor. Damn I hope we are the first ones to get the M-X upgrade out here in Hawaii (#239). I want to test this beast already. Cut us in line, and I guarantee some RED bikini action out by North Shore/Sandy's/Waimea posted on the forums! Not that you need the MX to do that though...unless we do it at night...and that is just such a different kind of awesome movie...

Anyway, I know a lot of speculation has been made about what will happen with the RED upgrade program. Some answers have been made already, but I just wanted to clarify on a few items.

For one, I was wondering if all RED One bodies (no matter what number) will always be available for the trade in value of $17,500 towards any RED Camera. Or is there in fact a cut off date in which RED will allow for this exchange? And if so, can a general time frame be speculated on when this will occur?

Also, I haven't found a clear answer on the forums (maybe I haven't looked hard enough, and if that is the case, I apologize), but I was wondering if the EPIC cameras with MONSTRO sensors will indeed still be available for the full RED One trade in value? Also will this include a similar package deal, that was given for the EPIC-X for RED One owners before Oct 29/2009, be available for any MONSTRO Cameras? (Long shot I know, but I thought I'd ask and cross my fingers) I know we were looking at the FF35 when the announcement about the various cameras came out a long time ago. I understand the MONSTRO release is some time away, but just wanted to see what RED's position on the matters above. Thanks v.much RED for such a sick investment towards so many peoples' future.

I'm #997, so I'm sure I've got some time before my number gets called, but I had some logistical questions; apologies in advance if any of this has already been answered elsewhere:

1. Can we drop off at Red Studios Hollywood for the upgrade when our number is eligible, or is the OC location preferred?
2. Do we need to put the PL mount back on (or at least send it with the camera) like we did for the last service? I'm using the Nikon ProLock.
3. Is shipping included in the upgrade cost, or is that an extra fee?
4. If shooting schedule delays sending the camera in, do we still have priority, or do we go to the back of the line?

And finally, one general question:

1. Does the number of people that upgrade have any impact on the delivery schedule for Epic-X? I'm guessing sensor availability isn't the gating factor there (and that the new ASIC is the more likely candidate), but I was still curious.

Thanks for the making the upgrade program (and the Rocket bundle) available - having seen the sensor in action at the January Red Day, the noise performance is truly incredible.

Thanks,
Tim

The R1 M-X Sensor upgrade program will begin next Friday (Jan. 22nd)

The price of the upgrade is $5750 and includes the M-X Sensor and Sensor Board replacement as well as the new upgraded Optical Low Pass Filter.

Customers that upgrade their cameras and decide to enter STAGE 1 or STAGE 2 of the epic program will receive a credit back of $1250 at the time they enter either of those 2 stages.

Footage from the upgraded cameras will need to be processed using a new version of REDCINE-X that will be released next week with the SDK to follow.

Please be advised that the upgrade turn-around time will be aprox. 2 weeks from when we receive your camera to when we ship it back to you so schedule your projects accordingly.

There is also bundle price for the sensor upgrade plus a RED Rocketcard for $8750.

Customers will begin receiving email invitations to enter the program next week in order of R1 Delivery date.

How do we "Select" the RED ROCKET BUNDLE upgrade option?

thanks!

Hi Tim,

When you get the email, just let us know you want the bundle, and we will add it to the upgrade order.

Vladimir,

I will send you an email.

Thanks,
Brian

I can answer your questions based on what was in my Upgrade email.

1. It is a Lake Forest address, that you can hand deliver to if you please, by appointment only.
2. You must have either the RED PL MOUNT or the RED NIKON MOUNT installed to be eligible for the upgrade
3. Owner covers shipping to, RED covers shipping back
4. that was not covered in my email.

Hope this helps. Everything subject to change, I expect.

When your number comes up you have to choose what stage you want.

and it states very clearly:

If you choose and reserve STAGE __ and do not execute your purchase in 30 days from notification that your order is ready, you forfeit all future trade-in rights to your RED ONE.

New Sensor will be 5k, but it is limited to 4.5k in the RED One as far as I know, due to hardware in the RED One.
Hmm, to what Jason posted:
"MX sensor in RED One will only be able to shoot 4.5K"
Anybody know if that means 4500 X 2520--ish.
OR
Is max resolution the same as it is now, with 4.5K WS (4480 X 1920)?
I would seem, in that case, that the benefit to upgrading the sensor is limited to the improved signal processing. But there wouldn't be any extra resolution in the new chip?

gettin' ready to ship Han (106) back... Chewie's next.

For those interested...

I picked up and paid for #19 on RedDay Zero August 31st, 2007. Received my email from Nick at RED early afternoon 1/20/10. I dropped off the camera for the upgrade first thing in the morning on 1/21/10. As of this posting it is still in process, original estimate was 7-10 business days. Last communication from Nick was to expect it next week which, if ready by Thursday 2/4/10, is within the initial advice.

As of today my anticipation level has reached such a fever pitch I have had to up the medication to remain calm :eek6:

And yes, before it gets mentioned, I do have a life :skep:

Cheers - #19

Ah, I guess I didn't make myself clear on that point. What I was referring to was what RED has in mind should you not go with either of the stages, how long the trade in value of the RED One will hold in the long run, ie towards either the EPIC MX or Monstro. Essentially if you can always and forever trade in your RED One against the price of the EPIC MX or MONSTRO brain.

Hi,

If you don't take a stage, no trade in. It was very clear in the original announcement. There was talk of clarification within a few days however several months have passed.
