We are planning on selling our Canon Century Converted 150-600mm lens. It has a PL mount and is in near perfect condition. We just had it serviced at Century and it is works flawlessly. We received our Nikon adapter and have been shooting 100% with our Nikon lenses since. As much as we love the Century, it must go. We are also planning on selling our original RED 18-50 lens. It is also flawless.

Is anyone interested?

Does it happen to have the built in zoom motor?

To answer questions...

1.
I will post some pictures tomorrow morning.

2.
For a price, we figure it is worth somewhere around $15000. We are accepting offers though, let us know what you think.

3.
It doesn't have the built in zoom motor.

Sorry there are no pictures yet, I will post pictures of the lens first thing tomorrow morning. Thanks for your interest!

Yikes! I personally know of two of these lenses that sold for less than half that since the beginning of this year, both with the manual slider focus. Both sold to redusers on this forum too... Your price is more indicative of this lens with the motorized zoom setup and zoom controller.

I'm interested though, looking forward to the pictures.

There are at least three different versions of the Canon 150-600 zoom in use. Here's some general info on them:

1) Stock Canon version, white with top handle, push/pull zoom lever which also rotates for racking focus, and for PL use on RED has a PL mount conversion, usually by Century

2) Optex conversion of the stock Canon lens, white with top handle, the bottom box on the lens has had the push/pull manual lever removed, and replacing it is a motor that controls the lens functions. Mount is Optex PL.

3) Full Century conversion of the lens, where the lens is disassembled, the glass removed for re-use, and re-installed in a completely new, black lens housing, with three geared rings and a Century PL mount.

#3 is the version that Wildlight Pictures has offered for sale on this thread. #3 is the version that is still widely offered for rental at cine equipment rental houses, and is far and a way the most expensive of the three versions of Canon 150-600 in use. IMO $14k may be a high price for that version, but it certainly will bring well over $10k in price. #2 is the second most expensive version - it is the Optex motorized version. There are not many of them around and they should cost somewhere around $8k to $10K. #1 is the least expensive option of the Canon 150-600, usually going for around $7k if it has a Century PL mount conversion.

I've owned and used version #1 on my RED cameras for several months now. I actually prefer that version because it is lighter (more mobile at 9 lbs), much smaller than the #3 full Century conversion, is all manual (no battery needed), and no gears, thus no follow focus is needed - thus less weight and increased mobility.

I use the Canon 150-600 extensively with RED for nature and sports cinematography - and the lens has performed remarkably well. I just had it fully serviced at Duclos Lenses and it is like a new lens except for a few nicks in the outer paint job.

Hope this info helps...

Here are some pics to illustrate my last post. Pic #1 is my Stock Canon 150-600 with Century PL conversion, on RED #8. Pic #2 is a close up of the Optex motor conversion to the otherwise stock Canon 150-600. Pic #3 of the Century re-housed version on Donatello's RED camera. #3 is apparently the version that Wildlight Pictures is offering for sale.

To my knowledge, the glass is the same original glass in all three versions

Gibby,
Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. That is extremely helpful!

As for the price, you should know that it includes a few things on top of the lens. First, the lens has the dual filter attachment at the mount. These are harder to find and come in extremely handy. Also included is a kit of over 20 tiffen glass filters. All bought directly from tiffen, top of the line. This lens is in extraordinary condition and is ready for anything.

We had planned on using it for wildlife as Gibby does, but found that our Nikon lenses just make more sense for field work.

Oh... Snap.

Thanks for the detailed info, Gibby! Of the 3 different variations you described, I was only familiar with the first two.

I'm very intrigued by this lens. Where is it located now? California, I presume? Would love to see it.

Philip,

Can you tell us which filters are included, or at least the ones you know for sure, 20+ is a lot. Does the lens have a case?

Thanks again Gibby for helping us out with all that info.

Couldn't be happier with my purchase. It was an easy transaction. The 150-600 looked amazing by the way.

Ian,
Thanks for coming down. It was a pleasure to do business with you! Enjoy the lens!

Philip

I've seen many 150-600's of all three variants (plus Clairmont's custom conversion). I would say that the Canon 150-600 was one of the most commonly rented lenses back in my rental house days. This particular lens for sale appears to be in good condition on the exterior. The dual spinning filter trays are a great feature as well.

Side note: Good to see you here Matt. I recently had my 150-600 fully serviced by Duclos Lenses, and they did an outstanding job. The lens is now very smooth, clean, and feels like new. For those interested in excellent lens service I recommend Duclos highly...
