  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED + NVIDIA SDK and updated REDCINE-X now available

Thank you Phil. You are correct, modern laptops with 2080 graphics can do wonders. I wish Jarred would some how come up with somewhat of a NLE associated with REDCine-X to complement with what they had done with nVidia partnership.

This particular post is announcing the SDK which ends up in 3rd party developers. I'm not breaking an NDA by saying usual suspects are looking to implement this, mostly because the potential has been revealed by the beta RCX efforts.

If I was a betting mammal, I'd say the usual suspects like Adobe, BMD, etc... will likely find a way to tackle it of course in their own development timeline and schedule. Which could either be fast or slow.

Has anyone tried multiple GPUs? Does it scale ok? I know MSI had an 18.4" laptop with 2x1080 GTX cards in them. Could be interesting with 2x2080 RTX since they are not the mobile versions. Only problem with the 18" was that the screen was a gaming 1080p monitor which is not what I want. I like UHD and of course better color values.

Question marks at the moment. Yes, SLI and NVLink "help", but more is coming on this front. And worse yet, every single bloody application has is it's own special unicorn when it comes to export speeds and how it taps into GPUs or CPU cores. Which is fine, they all work differently.

But perhaps to be way, way too much candid about such things. Playback and export are everyday tasks that need to be looked at harder despite the rather publicly sexy expansive and added features being dropped into our daily tools. All good, even on a hardware level somethings are limited. I'm a realist and understand how hard it is to make software that's compatible with stuff from 2007 through now, it would be much easier if we were all all closer to the current stuff. But I feel there's some focus being lost in the change logs and road maps in some cases. However, I'm not Poseidon nor do I control the sea. I mostly navigate and sail the waters no matter what is going on, but certainly know what friendly water looks like.

Whatever the case, this is good news for RED post production and likely will empower other workflows as a byproduct. It's amazing that RED and Nvidia went through this journey, similarly to the GPU acceleration we already benefit from, which is not commonplace, yet forgotten in time. For me, I actually use RCX as part of my typical workflow and all this has empowered my turnaround. As it seeps out there, it will empower many more.

Puget hasn't done any testing with the new REDCINE-X featuring GPU Decode as far as I am aware of.

Titan RTX can get you 8K FF 5:1 24-30fps full debayer, which is what we showed in March. That's on playback. Render speed, more variables come into play to just publish a number, but depending on codec you can/will see faster than realtime encoding to 4K and even 8K if the rest of the recipe plays nicely.

No the decoding was done on the CPU and the GPU only had to debayer.
It was GPU limited by the Quadro RTX 6000/8000 to 23 fps, with the same cpu the RX VEGA 64 reached 25 fps(puget test goes to max original frame-rate, 25 fps in this case).
Hence my remark about the de-bayering proces in Redcine vs. Resolve.

Good to hear Neil. I'm obviously not building a million PCs to test this stuff out, but all my main workstations are X299 and either Quadro RTX or Titan RTX based. One box has two Quadro P6000s in it and I see a difference between that and the Quadro RTX performance. That also could be due to how that specific system is setup and I am not tinkering with it if I can avoid it.

All the newer notebooks in my life from Dell, Razer, Gigabyte, and Asus have 2080 MaxQ GPUs and those do shockingly well for what they are. It will be interesting to see if we get some full sized laptops tapping into maybe multiple GPUs.

I'm going to be getting some review units from HP soon, and I'll be testing them out with Mistika, Scratch, and Resolve using a mix of Black Magic raw (4K), Mavic 2 Pro (UHD, h.264), and naturally some Helium 8K footage. It ought to be interesting, provided that SGO gets the new SGK integrated with some alacrity. :)

So I'm looking at a new PC build and dumping my long in the tooth 2013 Mac Pro. Editing 8k on this is painful. What's a good GPU option moving forward considering the Nvidia/Red partnership that doesn't break the bank. Is the RTX 2080 a decent option?

I'd look at the RTX 2080 vs the RTX 2080Ti. If the price delta isn't too much, and the particular Ti version you're shopping has significantly more VRAM, it should be worth the extra spend. Depending on your particular use case/workflow/budget you may be better off saving a few bucks on a lower spec CPU and putting that money into the GPU that will be doing the heavy lifting.

Cheers - #19

A lot will depend on when your prefered NLE will give you this option(.R3D GPU decoding).
For 8k editing/color grading/post processing, 8GB VRAM is not enough.

This is such a seriously impressive leap to make. I pulled up some clips I was working on not too long ago and I couldn't believe it was loading really quickly at full res on 8k footage...on a GTX 1080. Those are like, 1/4 res speeds on the same exact system before the update. Thank you and congrats on this.

Pretty cool to see Linus demo this first-hand. Great work RED team!

Quadro RTX 4000 ~ RTX 2070 ~ 21..22 fps at 8k 9:1.
It's more a card for the upto 5k range of camera's/resolutions.

So what is the real MVP for price to performance ratio in these cards (if only considering Red processing)...

a 2080 (non Ti) seems to be able to be had for between $700-750

a 1080Ti 11gb can be had between 700-800

a Titan RTX is ~$2500...

IMO

RTX2080ti (11 GByte) for upto 5k ~ $1250
RTX Titan (24 GByte) for 8k ~ $2500

Post processing software(NLE's, etc...) is having a hard time making use of more than 1 GPU.

Since no NLE is offering this possebility at the moment and no one is pointing a gun at you that you have to buy a GPU it might be wise to see how this evolves before buying.

I would wait to see how this gets adopted by NLEs before buying anything. Unless you already make heavy use of RedCineX.

With CUDA enabled, both RedPlayer and Cine-X immediately crash without even opening the clip on my system, which I suspect is due to the fact my laptop is running a ridiculously insufficient GeFroce GT740M GPU with only 2GB of dedicated memory. OpenCL mode works fine though, much like before and ironically on past versions it was significantly faster than the CUDA mode, which I always found peculiar given my GPU is an NVIDIA card. At any rate, from all the examples and tests I've seen from others, the new SDK seems phenomenal and I can't wait to upgrade to a proper PC that'll be able to harness its astounding capabilities!

According to nVidia, "Using NVLink to scale performance and memory capacity requires application-specific support."

Are we going to see this is enacted on REDCine-X Pro as well?

Anecdotally I seem to be finding footage shot over a year ago tends to crash RCXPro a lot more than newer footage. I`m not sure why.

Also I have a lot of footage which is flipped inside RCX and I find random frames not being flipped. I end up having to output a shot a couple times to get a good version. I`m running a RTX 2080 Ti

It's dated April 26th 2019. The SDK was released on April 23rd. They did that in 3 days? That's impressive.
