  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED NAB Speculation thread...

Thanks for the props Rudi. While I sympathize with the UW folk (and other specialty use cases) who could benefit from more sensor real estate, that market might be better served by a purpose built variant ala Epic monochrome.

Cheers - #19

Why not, and again, whoever comes up with that variant first will earn themselves a lot of new customers. God knows there are tons of FF lenses out there, even if mostly from the stills world, but amazing glass nonetheless.

I have used my RedOne and my Epic in ENG/EFP situations several times over the years with mixed results. I concur that its not "built for ENG", that said, I've always felt like including a few ENG/EFP targeted operational features would increase versatility without compromising it's function as a cinema or documentary acquisition system. Admittedly I am biased in that I would rather make payments on and maintain just one camera rather than 2 or 3. Moreover, the more cameras RED sells, the better the health of the ecosystem.

Cheers - #19

I've certainly used it in efp style applications over the years, I agree that maintaining one system is the best way to go. Had RED put out a 1080p module the moment Alexa hit the streets things might be slightly different now. More cameras and a healthy ecosystem also means bring every post house under the tent without having to dedicate resources to one format. There are three ways to fix that, allow GPU decodes, record "more edit friendly" format onboard or offer a low priced "converter box" that plugs into laptops, iMacs and towers for post facilities that. While the software tools are all there and free from red, the hardware tools might detract most post houses and contribute to the whole, "red is hard" BS, which I find a bit lazy.

Not really true, as the dragon has a higher density in the photo site and most likely demands the red colored ssd's to go at full frame at higher speed / lower compression...
r

ill take your expert word for it Bjorn. I'm going based on a short thread that was quickly removed. I hope you aren't suggesting our existing media will need to be replaced! That would be a setback.

But perhaps there is something to REDraw compression that will make the concept possible.

TED talks about NAB

What else will be at the booth?

There are always surprises. There will definitely be a Red Ray component to NAB. You will see a lot of discussion and demonstrations of 4K playback at the extremely low data rate of 10 Mbps. I started that bandwagon at CES, and this will continue. And Dragon is our next sensor. Without revealing too much, I can say there will be a very significant Dragon comonent to NAB. We're doing things related to keeping our pole position in the market.
