  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Mysterious SKULL

Earphones are as likely as the W being an upside down M.

I.e Not likely.

Some theories are so stretching they belong on Coast to Coast Am.

Agreed. I don't believe it is audio related nor do I really think they represent cans. However headphones don't only suggest audio but also radio. Think of a military radio operator. Most of us today wouldn't likely make that connection though, so rather than make headphones an overt part of the design (by say adding a headband or antennas to them) they left it ambiguous. Just a wild thought to support my own pet theory. ;-)

Just to keep the wildest speculations going:

Has anybody considered, these are two different parts? It seems most people guess the pictures are from the same piece of hardware.

Yep, I assume they are seperate.

I would laugh if the start/stop button were akin to a Staples Easy button, gifted to Jarred as a joke and now he is employing it to tease the shit out of us. :-) so it sits on Jarred's desk and he can press it every time he tweets a new picture or posts "heh, heh, heh." Instead of saying "easy" it goes "What do you think it is?" Over and over again.

It's his own Nuke RedUser button.

...and it's

If he doesn't have his own personal nuke RedUser button and I just imagined all that... Someone needs to build one for him. Carbon fibre, definitely.

Those are cheek bones not ears.

Maybe. To me, the logo appears to be a skull without the mandible. From a design standpoint, the deep notches on the sides seem significant. They don't need to be that deep to represent cheek bones. There could be dozens of reasons why they are - it was decided it looked cooler, more sinister, more congruent to the rest of the design (there are deep notches above and below the eyes), etc.

Since skulls don't usually have ears or letters of the alphabet running through them, stating what definitively is or isn't at this point about a highly stylized design may be premature. Maybe the "W" was an unintentional design element that RED decided to capitalize on after the fact. It's all speculation.

The more I look at it, I could make an argument for it spelling "JWL" instead of just a "W." Does anyone know Jarred's middle name? Maybe the "J" and "L" are for his name and the "W" is for the product.

At any rate, here's a visual argument for the validity of the ear guess. Could be something. Could be nothing.

Surrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre.

Who knows what the skull means but lets rule out the wild 1`s like audio due to non visible headphones on a skull.

Maybe someone sees sunglasses and that means Ketch has a module so he can stop wearing his glasses on his shoulder?

There's nothing on the current camera body for thirteen of those springy type pins to directly connect with, unless it's concealed beneath the actual body panels. There's a piece of protective tamper-evident type tape under the side SSD module, but I don't think it's got any contacts covered up underneath it.

So whatever that thing is, it needs some kind of interface between it and the current camera if it's supposed to connect via those pins, or it attaches by some other means and is itself something that as yet unknown modules connect to, or it connects to something else entirely, or...lol

Those are the pins from the Lens Mount, so I guess that would this is a a lens mount passthrough module, maybe a universal high speed motion-mount (with flash sync) for photographic lenses.

The most likely theory so far is the larger studio body with less boxy ergonomics and the connectivity that redusers complain about not having, all in one solution...

I don't see how you get that from a picture of a skinny module attached to the side of the camera? It would seem you're making suggestions based on non-visible elements as much as anyone else. That doesn't necessarily mean you're wrong (you are wrong, though).

Skull and brain dropped into skull makes sense.

Huh? A skull inside of another skull makes more sense to you? You throw a lot of sarcasm and confidence behind most of your posts, which I don't mind at all. But after that statement? Well...thanks for letting me know what's really up.

Wayne stop being a party pooper and stop. start. stop/start.

heh heh heh.

With a reply like that, it must be serious. Are we finally going to get the low end camera I've been waiting for since 2006/7? The easiest thing is just to put the brain in a button/contro/interfacedl filled eng/mount/eng cases. The case (with transferable LCD/viewfinder) are cheap to make compared to the brain., and everything is in one. You can make different brains, cheap 4kp50, to expensive 8kp100.

People here should realize, the existing hardware is probably capable of 1000fps, at reduced resolution. That is not as bad as it sounds, the matrix used reduced resolution and images that don't even match up, but we liked it anyway. Now, if we have a 8k+ camera of 40-50+mp at p50, we could get p300+ 4k, at 200fps 50mp, 1200+fps 4k. Just a theory. If Red could get on a good 14nm production line, then it could gets heaps more processing power over today. If Reds sensor manufacturer is aptina, then it is definitely possible as even Sony cross licensed with therm to get their low powered low niowe high speed technology. Looking at it, that way the image quality of previous generations seem to match up with them more than Kodak or fill factory cypress (? Was that who ended up owning them in the past) US options for sensors are limited. Now that aptina has Sony technology (probably not latest generation) top end aptina manufactured chips could be rather interesting.

A new camera could be it, and it could incorporate lots of the things mentioned by people.

Now, all we have to do is get replacement servicing locally for minimum down time and cost.

Thanks. :)

Hmm, I hope this isn't my 3D techniques (I've got hundreds of new camera technology designs).

So it has a "W" in it, see, it is my camera. :)

unwind your knickers.

If it is multiple modules, then yes, add them all on, from the sides to the front...and the camera will be encased. Like a Brain in a skull. No ears though.

If a burst mode add to the front then the camera is going to get more front end heavy. If there are multiple modules hopefully they might right that imbalance.

Burst mode on a new camera i guess, Jarred gave a "like" to comments evoking a new cam on his wall..

Highlight of the day when a new picture is posted. Can´t wait to see what it is. I would love a burst mode
