  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED MINI MAG , MINI MAG SIDE MODULE and MINI MAG STATION now shipping.

I already had the latest firmware (.34) since my cam just got serviced from HQ. Maybe I'll try rolling back then updating again. I'll let ya know how it goes.

Actually I'm holding off on that rolling back firmware idea. I just read in the operation guide that if I do that, my cam won't recognize the side ssd module.

I have already answered that question.. yes, there will be a Carbon side SSD module for the Carbon Fiber Dragons.

Hi Jarred, any chance you can share when this will be available? Am thinking of getting the CF Dragon. Would be ideal if this is already the side SSD module for the camera when I order ;)

I had the same issue. 4K on scarlet had everything below 11:1 greyed out. Called tech support, sent them a log file. They said it looks like an issue with the Mini Mag's and asked me to send them back. Will keep you guys posted.

Here's something useful. I went sniffing around Red Studios Hollywood today, popped into the Red Store, the Bomb Squad peeps helped me shoot this size comparison between the regular REDMAG and the MINIMAG.

Pretty small and big in size. Attractive for those shooting live events or just rolling long takes. 6K HD at 5:1 REDCODE, that 1TB when it comes out will hold 108-ish minutes of that.

Love the BIG Mini's... ;)

Looks like the going price for 128 SSD is $700 I wonder if Red will drop the price on the SSD cards until we can afford the mini card station etc. =)

What for? Do you want to shoot like in the old days with a 12 min mag?

Pat

Because while high-capacity mags sound great for those doing one-man band work, for people working in the traditional filmmaking environment with multiple cameras and DIT, it's usually preferred to have mag capacities that closer resemble that of a traditional film magazine. Reasons being is that you don't put all your eggs in one basket. I'd rather not lose ANY takes due to data loss, but it's safer to have 128gbs worth on a card, then have 4x to 8x that much get lost. It's also quicker for the DIT to offload, transcode, proxy, etc in smaller chunks.

If you're going out into the wilderness without a DIT, sure, grab a big mag. But there's something to be said about the smaller mags. Which as has been said are dropping in cost because everyone wants the 'new shiny'

Personally I'd rather have more mags than BIGGER mags.

Personally, i want more and bigger at the same time. ;)

I understand your concern about data safety, a bigger mag holds more footage and that is more risky. I'm totally with you on that. If i ever come into that situation where my footage is that important, i would prefer to have two separate SSD-modules and let the camera write mirrored data. Choosing smaller mags, just because of this, doesn't sound appealing to me, as it means more work, more hassle, more stress to the SSD-module/mags and well in some ways it's risky to have many mags floating around.

Or you just lower the compression, shoot always HFR to get those 512GB-miniMAGs filled up as quickly as you get your 128GB-bigMAGs now with 5k/24fps-footage. Hehe.

Im about to take delivery of my CF Dragon… How close are we to getting a Mini CF SSD module for the Dragons? Ive sold all my 1.8

Still a bit away unfortunately... going through another round of Carbon molds. I expect a sample next week and if that's good then we are still at least a month away.

Ive got to say, Ill be a little bummed having to sport a metal SSD module on my CF Dragon until the CF mini SSD module arrives. If I get it with the Mini SSD module will it be something that will be switched out when the CF Mini SSD Modules arrives??
