  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED MINI MAG , MINI MAG SIDE MODULE and MINI MAG STATION now shipping.

As a RED camera house owner/op and a DIT/workflow specialist, I can definitely say I do not want to see a dual mag system. At all. As-is we switched over to MINI-REDMAGs as our primary media and we use the rear SSD modules to support clients that insist on using the full-size REDMAGs. The one issue with a REDMAG we have ever had, RED resolved satisfactorily. And as a DIT, if I want mags sooner, I ask for them. Regardless of size. I have yet to work with a camera department that wasn't responsive to my request(s), particularly when those requests are backed up with technical reasoning or address the overall project requirements.

All of that aside... The MINI-REDMAGs are eff'ing brilliant. Love 'em.

Whats the difference in compression in in 96, 120 and 150fps on the mini and old? I dont have the old left and im curios.

I think I read somewhere on Reduser that the final version or beta was soon to be signed off on by Red but it will still take some time, maybe month'ish or more to actually be available. So nothing in the immediate future.

Has anyone had any issue with a red mini mag just stop working/mounting?

Am in Italy shooting carnival and we hopefully only shot a little bit today due to the bad weather and when we got back we tried mounting the drive and it wont mount. Tried putting it back in the camera and having the same issue. I'm sort of screwed now since i only have one other mag which is still working but am worried that it might fail me now too, had the mini mags for weeks now and no issues and now when i'm aboard on a client shoot i'm having trouble. Can anyone shine some light on this.

To my eye it looks like the Pins got pushed in from when i plug the mag into the reader when i compare the working mag with the non-working mag. Can pushing the mag into too hard cause this? I was told by red when i had a faulty mag reader to jam it in there good now i'm worried that was bad advice.

Sorry to hear about your problem Jacob. We've not had any problems with ours. If something wasn't lined up properly and it got jammed in there, that could be the problem. I wouldn't follow the "jam it in there" statement with the new mags (or the old ones :) I know it doesn't help since your in Italy, but when you get back, if it is a bent pin, then I'm sure RED can look at it for you.

Ketch,
How secure is the battery in the mount? Any wiggle, play, loose connection? Any possibility of coming off in a gun and run situation?
Any V mount out there that bolts to the brain as this one does?

Just went through the Operations Manual and it seems that even with the Mini Mag system, when shooting Dragon Mini Mag at lower resolution and higher frame rates you're at the same compression as on the Epic with the 512GB 1.8" card. Any reason why the Mini Mags are actually the same speed as the outgoing 512 1.8" at higher frame rates / lower resolutions? The photosites are smaller on the Dragon, it'd be great to gain a little advantage over Epics larger photosites with some lower compression at higher frame rates on Dragon Mini Mag.

Example : Epic X with 512 1.8" Mag at 2K 210 fps is 5:1
Dragon X with 512 Mini Mag at 2k 210 fps is 5:1

Will this improve the Scarlet Dragon or is it better to go with the standard 1.8?

The Scarlet Dragon will have the same framerates / compression ratios whether you use 1.8" or Minis. The reason for going Mini first though would be, you already have the Side Mag, and mags, and when you upgrade to Epic someday, you now have minis!

For cost reasons though, I'll be going with the 1.8"s for my Scarlet.

But if I compare price, the minis package with two 512 mags costs you $6,595.00 while the equal total size (1024 gb) in 64 gb cards for 1.8 is $7,550.00
So it's cheaper with the minis even though you can't buy them in smaller sizes. Would have been awesome if there were 256 gb mini cards.

Your best choice is the new 240GB 1.8" mag - amazing value for money ($ 1.450,- USD) IMHO...!
