  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red in OZ

I agree with Paul - it would be great to discuss rental rates & packages. I know Lemac has 2 Reds on order (low res #'s) - will be interesting to see how they price and package things. Anyone know of any other Brisbane reservation holders?

I've been stalking ebay in preparation for the arrival of my Red One - so far I've got a pretty comprehensive Nikon manual SLR kit, Ronford Hi & Lo legs, and a Worral geared head. Planning on picking up a P+S Technick SkaterMini dolly at NAB as well. Would be great to find out what kits people are putting together.

Rocketeer - I had found a tender auction on graysonline.co.nz for an NZ film company that had gone into liquidation. Missed the closing date as I was overseas. They had everything from an Arri 435 to lens kits & follow focus. Have you heard about this? If there's anything left I'd certainly be interested.

I'll be at NAB - would love to catch up with anyone else who's going. I'll be at the Apple event on the 15th as well - looking forward to seeing what post workflow will emerge - hopefully 4k capable.

Loving the OZ thread - thanks to all who are contributing.

All tenders for the Silverscreen liquidation were rejected. The liquidators were not happy with what they were offered. I understand they are looking at repackaging the equipment into kits and either auctioning or tendering the equipment that way.

Feedback from DOP's has been that the gear is old and some of the lenses are a bit ropey.

Having said that this is the same gear that Silverscreen shot award winning commercials on. I don't think the Liquidators realise that this is probably the worse possible time to offload film gear!

I'm hoping for a Red prime lens set to be announced at NAB. I would rather wait for lenses specifically designed for the camera than take a risk on used cine glass. Or we will wait for lens tests to come through from other users.

OK ANZAC's. Jim Jannard and Jarred Land are in Wellington as I type with a prototype doing camera tests with Peter Jackson. I'd love a shot of the Oakley Lear on the Wellington Airport tarmac as proof but my sources are 100% reliable.

I got one! I can email it to you if you like?

What are the Wellington's paparazzies doing now? Where are the pictures online? JJ, JL, PJ or the RED tests in NZ...?

This one still did not make any shot...? Just watching...!!!

Under Tight Security or the bodyguards are working hard on the R-E-D carpet...?

Hey guys....
Yeah i saw all that NZ gear at Grays online auction house.......
there was a lot of kit there for sale....! would have loved the Arri MB-18 and follow focus. some lenses would have been nice too, but sounds as thought some were a bit average.
Talking lenses for the RED, i've been looking at the Optar Elite S16 prime set.
http://www.cinematechnic.com/products/optar_illumina_lenses.html
I figure i'll only be shooting 2K RAW for the time being, and the Optar glass seems affordable, although if RED do a prime set i could definitly be swayed..!
A good S16 zoom would complete the kit, and maybe a Canon 300mm PL mount.
Re other piece's for the Kit, i'm looking at a Chrosziel S16 swing away matte box & follow focus now, lighter weight than the Arri...
i'm kicking myself because i just sold my 7+7 Sachtler head and 3 sets of legs.....:poster_oops:
Most of my work will be Doco, TVC & Music Vid & the odd Short here and there, so the S16 style set up suits my needs.
Nothing i do would need to be 'Archived' so to speak, by shooting 4K.
nice chatting
Paul

Ok, here's proof that the Oakley jet was in Wellington today.

So guys I spoke to Ted last week at RED
Subject to confirmation he is keen to attend and help with the first Australian RED user group meeting at SMPTE in Sydney.

I touched base with Aust SMPTE and I will have more - and then give the details to Ted at NAB.

I want to have this as a team effort - I dont want to be seen to be trying to push the group in any direction - but I figured this was the correct first steps
Can we set up a "steering committee" or core group to make this happen and keep it RED USER friendly?

I really dont want to be 'running' anything - but I'm well place to organise things further if the group wants it

Mike

That's great Mike. You can register my vote to get TED downunder.

I'm based in Vico but I'd be keen to attend if it came together.

Maybe this could consitute the first "Red in OZ" meeting??

I know JB at Lemac has a couple of early reservations. Do you want facilities and ACS involved or are you keeping it independent?

No, I know JB - He's great ! - John and any others are very welcome. I think we need to be open to all.

Mike,
Great work keep it up.....please!!

Here are the details for the SMPTE07 Conference Scheduled for July 17-20 at Sydney, Darling Harbour.

http://smpte.org.au/conferences.asp

and here is Richard Kaub contact details:

http://smpte.org.au/smpte07papers.asp

I was also speaking to John Maisels (SMPTE) who said Ted will need to contact Richard in the next few days with details of the 'paper' he wishes present at the SMPTE07 conference.
He said there are still a few spots open and feels Ted will have no problem getting on the speaker list but needs to contact Richard in the next few days. He mentioned SMPTE couldn't fund Ted expenses.

On another note there seems to be a bucket load of questions regarding support/training of RED which hopefully will be answered at NAB/directions. I'm expecting/hoping that hands on experience of RED is a one de facto task the RED User group (RUG) can provide. Be interested in hearing what everyone wants the group to provide.
The first one I can think of is a group of us working with the camera for a day on inside & outside locations looking at field monitors and later 4K.
I wonder if Sony would be interested in providing their 4K projector. Tricky, but I know someone in Sony marketing and will ask.
Anyway be great to hear what other want....what activities/directions people wish the group to go?
Cheers,
Dave,

Not sure if this has been clarified with Rocketeer, but are Kiwi REDs welcome to "interface" with Australia ? It could well make sense given how often we get equipment over from you guys when the heat is on here.

Fully 'paid up' members as far as I'm concerned, thou a dozen Bluff oysters wouldn't go astray!!
