Red in OZ

Hey all,

I am a bit late to this thread, but thought I would throw in a post and say hi.
We have not reserved a red yet, but I have a feeling it is on the cards before the year is out.

I am keen to catch up with you all at SMPTE in June if you are meeting and discuss this all futher.

Anyway, keep us informed of plans for the meeting at SMPTE, and I will be sure to see you there.

Thanks people - this is a great thread.

Cheers

"I am keen to catch up with you all at SMPTE in June if you are meeting and discuss this all futher." from Projectsplat

sounds good except I think it's in July ... from the website ....

SMPTE07: It's All About Access
Scheduled for July 17-20 at Sydney’s Darling Harbour, the theme for SMPTE07 is ‘Access’.

I wouldn't mention it but I am just as likely to turn up in July and be told ... actuallly this is not the real SMPTE ... that was last week!!!

It's July right?

Just an update.
I have spoken to SMPTE papers chair and I have emailed Ted.
If Ted can make it we can still get a paper into SMPTE - they are been very open and helpful. (officially papers have closed).

If Ted comes - or even if he does not, - we will hold a user group workshop in July - to tie in with SMPTE,.. so what is wanted?
I assume
a) a 'fake' shoot - perhaps outside at Darling Harbour ? Or do we want
b) a discussion get together with some sort of presentation?
c) a studio session away from Darling Harbour - at say a sound stage ?
d) A paper giving a formal discussion of the workflow and showing red footage (even if Ted can't make it )
e) all of the above is not a good answer :-)

As I said I would welcome a steering committee approach on this - so we all have a voice and we share the decision making.

But for now I will keep moving forward and report back to the group here- if thats OK?

mike,

there are some great suggestions there. I am keen on the fake shoots and the idea of a brief paper followed by a lengthy discussion - over a bottle or two of red??

another suggestion, and potentially one for another gathering, would be to look at the post production end of the workflow, and possibly get our hands dirty there.

since most people in australia would probably be downconverting the 4k Red RAW straight to 2k, 1080p or worse, it would be great to drag along a Mac Pro and ingest the footage shot, process it from RAW, and see how it looks out the other end of the workflow.

my biggest reason for get involved in all of this at the early stage (without a reservation) is that once people have gone out and shot this stuff, there is going to need to be someone who knows what to do with it at the other end.

I went through this last time with Varicam and more recently with P2, so this time I am keen to get on top of this before someone turns up with a project they have shot, and start wondering what the hell they are going to do in post.

as I mentioned, this initial meeting might not be the right time to add post production to the discussion, but it would be good to put this on the table for consideration.

cheers

edit - mike, i like the idea of a steering committee, as i would hate to see your time burned up attempting to keep this running. i am not sure that I would be the right person to be part of a steering committee, but I am willing to invest some time and effort into helping this get off the ground.

Thanks very much for that Mike…..great work!!

Ted at SMPTE (Aust) would be good and have him attending a Red user group meeting is excellent. I’m sure you’ll keep us posted.

If at all possible I’m interested in what measures we could use that would keep this Downunder user group regionally open & accessible to all round here. It’s difficult as the REDUSER forum here provides a lot of general RED advice to all and in the main we probably needn’t be mirroring what’s going on in the main reduser forum. Going back to what Mike said about education would be key because I think post NAB the interested parties will increase, so demos and presentations are great. However this may be great for Sydney all & sundry but doesn’t help the rest of the group.

We still need to work out the eGroup notion. Another thing I was thinking about all these user groups round the globe and thinking that most of them will have similar problems and could benefit from a common user group plan with resources i.e. presentation material, etc which could be reused within the local groups.

Another thing is condensed tech documentation/training materials/resource information etc particularly when interested parties want information on RED. I’m hoping a lot will come out at/post NAB. I think the more accessible this information is the quicker RED will be taken up in the community. Stuff such as workflow as Alister mentioned. As we all now most of this stuff requires trawling through the RED forum/s. I’m imagining workflow will be worked out globally but proving and looking at results could be a local initiative i.e, showing different formats/codecs side by side on screen. Also list of local post house, screening venues sympathetic (or not) to the group would be valuable. And as mentioned other local information such as importing, insurance, rates for RED camera, accessory hire i.e. best place to go and rent a couple of Zeiss primes for the weekend if I wish.

Stop raving Dave…..

You know want might be useful if others are inclined…..a list of people interested in RED that we could pass round via email so people if they wanted could get in touch, have a chat with others in their area. Also be the beginning of this RED user group.

I can start – Send me an email to david@farland.com and include whatever contact details you wish i.e. real or forum name, city, telephone or email. Name & city is just fine! I’ll post (BCC) it round say fortnightly/monthly for a while, just while we’re setting up. It’s a start…..

Anyone feel like hosting an Australasian user group website sometime….

Rave stopped.

Dave,

With regards to ...

a) a 'fake' shoot - perhaps outside at Darling Harbour ? Or do we want
b) a discussion get together with some sort of presentation?
c) a studio session away from Darling Harbour - at say a sound stage ?
d) A paper giving a formal discussion of the workflow and showing red footage (even if Ted can't make it )

All of the above mis not a bad answer but if we could only have a selection I would go for the practical every time ... lete's see it happening in front of us rather than read about it ... look touch feel is my preference

so I would love to attend

a) a 'fake' shoot - perhaps outside at Darling Harbour ? Or do we want
-or-
c) a studio session away from Darling Harbour - at say a sound stage ?
-then-
do some download and some edit and then some viewing

Happy easter ...

Just so you guys know... I have submitted a paper to SMPTE as a 'placeholder' it is a long story, but it is to lock in a slot (applications have now closed)- while we discuss things at NAB - so anyway I have submitted a paper. I only say this to you guys, as clearly - if at some point this is published on the net - you guys dont go: " Hey why is HE down for a paper".

In summary: things are happening - it is important to pencil something in as we solve the details.

user group workshop

user group workshop

Mike,
A user group workshop is a top idea.
I think a presentation of some description should come first, to help get everyone up to speed on the latest developments etc, and also a good opportunity for us to put a few names to faces and have a brew or two.....
Shooting some footage, outdoors and studio based is a must, and would be a good next step.
Personally i would love to do some really in depth test of the camera. Latitude tests, Green/Blue screen test, PL v's 2/3" v's Nikon Glass, 4K v 2K v 1080P, Film out test, colour grading etc, but i know initially this would be too comprehensive for what your proposing.

Obviously the next thing would be taking the outdoor/studio footage and going through the post work flow procedures.
Then if possible seeing it in all its RED glory projected up on a big screen (2k or 4K) if possible...?

hey thats my two cents worth.....and yes i'd love to help out in any way needed.
have a great time all those lucky enough to get to NAB.....!
Cheers

I’ve been known to fly to Sydney for a workshop, and I’d love to do it again. It’s a great city, and I met loads of good people last time I was there.

Are we thinking of a two-day workshop? It seems like there’s a lot to fit into one day. This is how I could see the schedule panning out:

day one: presentations... mingling... shooting (in smaller groups).

day two: post production workflow...and then projecting sample footage.

I’m fully keen on making a contribution, although I’m not really sure what I can do at this stage, being here in NZ.

Anyone have close connection with AFTRS as they have a Sony 4K projector?

Just so you know - I agree with the points about 4K and we have already started work on including that in our planning.

More after NAB

Mike

Hi Folks

New to this thread but eager to collaborate any way we can. A few of us here in Brissie have clubbed together to get #903.

SMPTE get-together is a great idea. Anyone else sign up for a RED here in QLD?

Hey guys GREAT NEWS.

After talking to Ted yesterday at the show opening - he is 90% sure he will be flying to Sydney for SMPTE, and we joining our workshop / Seminar. He said something may happen - but he is fine for me to post here about it. Ted is slammed (- clearly !!-) and so he has asked me to co-ordinate his trip for him. He will be here for several days. Let me know if you have questions - try and not email him directly unless it is confidential - as I will be co-ordinating things on the ground in Sydney for him. If you guys are reading this right now and have any questions - please post them ASAP as I will be heading back to RED this morning - for another meeting with Ted.

Just to repeat it is not 100% due to co-ordinating with other roll out activities but we are 90% sure it is all good and this will include a 4K screening of RED material.... but details are to follow.

thanks so much

Mike
