  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ever going to make Viewfinder for RAPTOR

On the contrary, Alex, with any other brand and camera, I never have to worry about whether I plug in the SDI or HDMI at “the wrong time” or in “a certain order”. It’s just with the Komodo and I guess now the Raptor that I’ve heard of issues that require care and workarounds. Your post actually proves that something is wrong on an inner technical level, hence why we have to be careful with RED’s current cameras.

This is a common and well documented issue on ANY camera using 12G SDI. This includes Arri and Sony. I’ve experienced this issue first hand on an Alexa 35 very recently. I’ve had it happen on a Venice last year as well. And yes, it also happens on Red cameras. Back to EVF’s…

Well then, if it’s just 12G SDI that’s problematic then either someone has to figure out a solution on the camera side or there needs to be a safety attachment or even an adjustment to the connector design itself, normally none of that is an issue unless a bunch of devices are daisy chained to one battery incorrectly.

As for EVFs, I don’t know what more this thread can offer as we’re basically waiting for RED to release theirs or a third party solution has to be used and quite frankly some of the third party ones look pretty cool as it is.

I’ve been using the Zaccuto Kamelion EVF. It’s fairly robust and has a decent image. The cable management is obnoxious though, and yes, so is the disconnecting and reconnecting cables between swaps. Fingers crossed for a single cable solution on Red’s future offering.

I've been hotplugging Sonys with 12G 2 days a week for a year, never even heard of one burning out.

Exactly, this thread just shows a clash of user experience, there has to be something else wrong if things are burning out, it’s just a video output. Like I said, if the 12G connector is so sensitive then it needs to be redesigned. However, if you're hot plugging regularly and not having any issues then something would have to be wrong camera side or power side for folks who are having issues.

With Jarred's tease this evening....

It appears there will be three options now for DSMC3 EVFs:
- RED DSMC3 EVF (unknown release, but I suspect it's above in the picture)
- RED DSMC2 EVF via DSMC3 Adapter A (likely the smallest decent OLED solution)
- 3rd Party EVFs via SDI

Option 2 is a smart move on RED's part.

This really is taking too long. Camera was announced in September 2021. I had held off moving to Raptor because of this. Hit a tipping point where if I didn’t sell Monstro now then wouldn’t get anything for it. Can we please have an update on this?? Am I really expected to buy a 3rd party VF?

I literally sold my whole Monstro kit a week ago!!! I was told this wasn’t possible :banghead:

How is it possible that Jarred tells that the old DSMC2 EVF “is preferable” on current cameras than the new DSCM3 EVF they are (I suppose) developping ?!!!

Reading what he said, it sounds like the DSMC3 model will be physically larger and heavier than the DSMC2 model. And this is likely coming first for those thirsty for EVF juice if he's teasing it now.

"just part of our new DSMC3 monitor program and in some ways the DSMC2 evf on KX or Raptor or XL will be preferable to the actual new DSMC3 EVF, especially on size."

And also, I think he's hinting that if you want this solution and since there are a finite number of DSMC2 EVFs out there, he was mostly giving people a heads up before they become super expensive or "gone".

All the "crazier than DSMC2" EVFs I've seen are physically larger and I suspect that is going to be the case on the new model.

I am pretty sure it’s either or.
You only have one “ video in” port on top so you cannot connect two devices.
It’s not just a matter of a pass through adapter.
Ideally we would get the option to buy the top plate adapter plus an optional connection to SDI for use with the monitor on top…

Honestly this is perfect for me for the time being or absolutely loved it. Not a fan of Touch-Screen monitor.

Do we have any kind of timeframe for the adapter? And is here a firmware update to allow the use of the function buttons and rotating the image depending on the viewfinder installation.
For a minimal setup on the Komodo for example it would be easiest to use the viewfinder “upside down” and using the 1/4 thread on the top…

Nice to have an adapter and clearly it is now what you make of it in terms of size and ergonomics regarding EVFs. Personally, if I were buying, I would pick a third-party option by SDI just for the feature to carry it over to other cameras, I’m sure the RED DSMC3 EVF will be nice though.

I just snatched up a cheap DSMC2 EVF from Adorama. I have a Zacuto Kameleon which has a really nice image but is big and bulky and needs two cables. Hoping there is a way to still use the USB'ish DSMC3 monitor as well. If not I do have a non touch Small HD monitor but I'd be trading power and SDI cables from an EVF to the same issues with a monitor, I'd almost be more inclined to use a Lemo DSMC1 7" monitor if it works and I can just go from one to the other with the same cable. If worse comes to worse I can just keep the Zacuto and sell the DSMC2 EVF for the same or more than I paid for it.

Its been almost 3 months still not seeing the adaptors......:(

I think they will have a EVF very very soon, I just hope it blows away the last ones as they've had so much time to get it right.
