To me Viewfinder is really important then Monitor, Since RAPTOR has menu on the side i really don't need monitor to control menu. If RED is planning to make any adaptors to use any existing RED Viewfinder would be awesome. 12G SDI isn't a viable option for me to use other SDI viewfinder with higher chance of plug/unplug error.

There's Portkeys, ZCAM, and Zacuto Kameleon Pro EVFs that can work with HDMI if that helps. I haven't been too interested in V-Raptor or Komodo so I wasn't aware that RED didn't have an EVF option already, guess they may just be letting third-party handle that. Even with my RED One MX I prefer an LCD as the EVF is a little bulky and maybe not as clear but I admit some of these newer high-res EVFs look pretty tempting!

RED is currently working on the DSMC3 EVF. They have been, and yes, it's taking a hot minute. But Jarred has dropped a couple decent teases about a month or so ago.

Thanks, Hopefully soon.

I am aware of all of those 3rd party viewfinders and RED viewfinders aren't bulky(Except Red One) and are small and the best you can get, also You aren't getting what i am trying to say, It's 12G SDI out issues. If you aren't careful, it could be an expensive learning process.

That’s why I suggested the HDMI instead of the SDI, no chance of frying the camera or EVF that way.

Nope, Same things can happen to HDMI and did fried one of my Epic-X board a while ago, as i said it was my expensive try to save money lesson.

Man, if RED can't even make their HDMI ports safe then why would you think their RED EVF/LCD port would be any safer? The 12G SDI issue is one thing but HDMI should be the safest option.

It's much, much, much more about what you are plugging into it and how. This isn't a RED exclusive issue. It's plagued Arri, Sony, and Canon as well. I'm certain others too.

I think its also a cable issue too. I use canare sdi 12g cables and never had an issue with my komodo or raptor and there were times I didn't follow the right procedure.

Based on my tracking for several years across multiple cameras it's:
- Cable
- Device
- And "weirdness", i.e. strange rapid shutdowns of AKS, batteries, etc. Some of which is human error.

I have yet to have an SDI port blow on anything, my own bodies or those I've rigged up for stages. Probably close to 400+ days on 12G SDI now and some studios I've setup have been running for over a year or so now. It's oddly spooking me out a bit. Mainly I either have hard line to a SmallHD big or small monitor or Teradek Bolt 4K plugged in. A few weirder setups in there too. Also going through Silverbullets and more broadcast oriented boxes like Multidyne units.

Thnaks, thats kinda gives more confident to use 12G SDI.

Any link to the dropped tease? Hope it's small has also HDSDI and HMDI a great field of view and is quiet.

yeah and now they choose finicky USB-C type cable for their monitor.Big yikes!

And that USB-C type cable is no regular USB-C type cable but a 150USD different pinout kind of USB-C looking cable.

Happend to misplace my raptor monitor cable. Thought any USB-C cable would do... The stress on the next shoot was quite intense. Lol

I have been told that the long awaited EVF will be a reworked version of the old OLED. I am about to sell my monstro kit including VF but I guess there will be a new connection required. I don't have an issue with the old VF just would LOVE not having to keep replacing stuff all at once ... :beaten:

This really is taking too long. Camera was announced in September 2021. I had held off moving to Raptor because of this. Hit a tipping point where if I didn’t sell Monstro now then wouldn’t get anything for it. Can we please have an update on this?? Am I really expected to buy a 3rd party VF?

It has nothing to do with RED, or ARRI, or Sony, or Canon. It's the way it works - literally the image you're sending over the cable is a bunch of electric signals. In order to provide those signals you have to use electricity, or electric power in other words. The SDI/HDMI doesn't blow out by itself, in most cases it's neither a dead cable, or a dead power cable, or a + connected without a -. The way the electricity works is that on the + you have a feed, and on the - you have a downstream feed, and if there's no - connected in the system - the electricity from the + will search for the other way to get by. That's where the SDI/HDMI comes in providing a place for electric signal to go through. The basic idea that SDI/HDMI usually are being fried when the cable is connected on both sides to the camera and monitor, while the - on the power side is somewhere disconnected/bent/broken.

crazy that DSMC3 is now 2 years old, and there is no Red EVF and only the lousy komodo outrigger handle.

almost time to start looking towards the DSMC4 with their 5-6 year ecosystem cycles lol

On the contrary, Alex, with any other brand and camera, I never have to worry about whether I plug in the SDI or HDMI at “the wrong time” or in “a certain order”. It’s just with the Komodo and I guess now the Raptor that I’ve heard of issues that require care and workarounds. Your post actually proves that something is wrong on an inner technical level, hence why we have to be careful with RED’s current cameras.
