  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Electronic Lenses and Mount

Everything has changed.

Changes are usually good. In the case of RED it usually means they've thought up something killing :-)

I had a thought. Does anyone know, was the rationale behind having a *RED* electronic mount, not compatible with anything else, ever publicly discussed? I mean, why invent yet another new mount when Nikon & Canon already have perfectly good serviceable electronic lens mounts... maybe they're not up to cinema quality, they might have issues with heavier lenses, but still... not expecting an answer, just sayin...

Or maybe it's time, on this one issue, to talk to the competition - and the lens manufacturers - and try to get an industry standard agreed for an electronic PL mount? Anyone think that has a chance of happening?

you guys make it really hard to stop talking about stuff in development :)

Give in Jarred. Go with impulse. Let your hair down. Share. It's good for the soul. Unburden yourself.

In refrence to the Cannon/Nikon mounts, I don't think that Red would want to be constrained by another's design or spec. Hell, they don't even like being constained by their own designs or specs (which is rad). They support it to support us and support the glass but I think it would be highly suspect to believe Red is sitting around saying that the existing mounts are perfect or "good enough", let's just roll with these.

I don't think they're perfect or good enough; the PL mount is far better mechanically in my view (just as I think the Canon breech lock was the best 35mm SLR mount).

But taking an existing mount and just using it would instantly open up the prospect of selling cine-grade RED electronic lenses to huge numbers of DSLR users, and perhaps weaning them off DSLR and onto EPIC in due course (if someone is on a limited budget, spend it on glass; then they have their priorities right!). That was my thinking.
