Are these the small "button" microphones that Red has alluded to as being available for the Epic and Scarlet to plug in the the balanced 3.5mm jacks on the front of the body here on Shawn Bannon's picture?:

Anybody get chance to check them out, or get a closer pic?

I saw these too. They might just be for protecting the port. Anybody know?

Tell me more, whatsa button mike and what did they mention?

Jarred (at least I think It was Jarred,) told me around November 30th that RED would be releasing Button microphones that plug into the front jacks for ENG style shooting.

I'm not sure, but 'button mic' sounds to me like it would be more for scratch tracks to help sync audio than for ENG shooting... Mainly because little electret condenser mics do look like buttons and you could easily make a little mic that plugged straight into the front with one or two of them.

Well that looks rather nifty, but aren't those puppies just going to pick up camera noise exceedingly well? I get the idea, but does anyone know how they're different from other mics? Specs?

I think its a great idea, simply plug them in when you just want scratch / guide tracks, plug into an outboard mixer for professional shoots, or even directly to wireless receivers for wireless booms / lavs. I really love the idea of no built in mics.

Anything that small and convenient will serve many useful purposes other than pro-quality audio recording.

Ah cool, thanks for the shots.

Agreed that they aren't a high fidlity solution, but for "out of the box" shooting configurations with Scarlet Fixed, I suspect that is what we will have to start with.

Yeah here is a quote from Jarred specifically stating they are for scratch audio:

The mic is a low profile scratch microphone that snaps into the front microphone ports on both Scarlet and Epic.. it's not built in per say but it blends in pretty well. We like to keep things modular to give people options.

2 technical issues with that product you linked to. First is that it is probably not designed to receive full 48VDC phantom power. It is probably expecting a lower voltage bias in the range of 3.3 to 5VDC or so. Second is that is a stereo microphone, so left goes to tip, right to ring, and ground to sleeve. The Scarlet mini input is expecting mono balanced, so tip sig+, ring sig-, sleeve ground. The effect of plugging in a stereo mic, if it works at all dues to the over-voltage condition, is that you will null anything in the "center" of the stereo field (the subject you are filming most likely) and only pick up out of phase stereo information, like room reflections, isolated sources to the left and right, etc...

There are very few products that use mini balanced audio connections. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the discontinued Korg MR-1 solid state recorder. The replacement, the MR-2 ended up getting rid of that feature. I can see where the confusion might occur, as 99% of the time, when you see this connector, is is generally for stereo products, just just FYI for future Scarlet owners - know your gear. I would have suggested TA3 as a more appropriate connector (like some Sound Devices products) as it is more of a standard in the sound world, but truly more bulky than the mini. I'm happy to see the mini on there rather than no balanced at all - I just foresee it being misused a lot.

+1

Yeah, I could really use a pair of those... Like tomorrow.
