  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED DSMC button mics?

Hey Jarred, any news on the button mics? Are there any in particular that are worth mentioning now?

Any mike this small is not going to be directional enough to be useful in a documentary situation. It would work fine as scratch audio. There's a reason why shotgun mikes are the size they are. This is no different than why lenses have to be a certain size and weight -- there's only so far you can push physics.

A mike this size is essentially a lavaliere mike, and it has to be placed within a foot or so of the actor's mouth. The best place to mount it is on the actor, not on the camera. This is where wireless mikes come in.

You absolutely can put a wireless mike and transmitter on a reporter, then put the receiver on the camera. No problem there -- it's done thousands of times a day, around the world, by news crews and documentary filmmakers. But I wouldn't rely on a tiny camera-mounted mike for anything crucial. A shotgun mike... maybe, for B-roll or background footage.

For sync sound click track, non professional audio just audio that is used to sync up with I made this little inexpensive mic.

Full disclaimer it was Matts idea sorry cant remember his last name.

Works cool very light very sweet and love it.

BigLu, would you please share more on how you made that (parts, etc.)? I'd love to have that for a scratch track!

Check out Tonaci Tran's blog. He found one - I think it was Panasonic - which is a mini stereo mic which does the trick.

But I'd rather now from RED ;)

Someone on reduser confirmed they work. Someone else lamented about the direct plug in option being too close to the fans for even scratch audio so I plan on running it through my top handle with the cable provided.
Anything but a very directional microphone is going to be right next to the fan vents, so it'll be more of a "fan microphone" than it is a useful scratch-track mike.

The best rule of thumb is to put the microphone close to the actor, not close to the camera. You guys are going in the wrong direction, trying to put a lavaliere on a camera. Never in the history of documentary or news production has that worked. Simple physics will tell you that a directional microphone (an interference-tube design) is the only thing that can work on top of a camera, especially a camera with a fan at the front of it.

But nothing will beat actually hiring a sound mixer to put a great microphone in an optimum position.

Marc, you are right. But these are only meant as a reference / scratch track to sync audio without having to use a bigger setup.
At least that's what everyone is trying to achieve. Replacing the audio guy is not an option. For OnePersonENG this of course is not sufficient either.
