  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Drive!!!

Richcam and Craig

I would really appreciate it if one of you would be willing to lock off the camera on a shot with the red drive and hit record in an average temp room and see how long it records for before camera fans kick in loud enough to cause audio issues.

Thanks

EDIT: I see fergus and I were on the same page here (ha)

Here's my highly scientific test with the Red Drive and fan...

started recording at 10:18 AM in my edit bay, no mics hooked up because I still need to get a mini xlr to xlr adapter... Fan speed "Variable"

started close to silent

around 25-30 minutes fan perceptible but not an issue (but I'm no audio guy)

at 60 minutes went up another DB or two still useable

fan stayed the same until roll out @1:45PM... Never went into anything close to "Hurricane" mode (Yes that's 1:45PM - static shot mostly but heavy rain was going through the frame half the time)

What was the ambient temperature?

Thanks Manny.

I would like to hear what a sound man thinks but your test is very promising. By the way are you getting an X41 or is the swap out you already got an X version?

Absolutely...I'll configure RED 8X this weekend, with the audio setup as described and post some pics of it on the audio forum here on RED User. I'll also post configuration pics of the EFP (on EFP/ENG forum) and long lens sports/nature configurations (on Lens test forum) I use this weekend (see below)

Brilliant Gibby! I'm feeling in need of some EFP/ENG reassurance..

And thanks Manny for posting a test so quickly

Steve, we need to get you outfitted with a better microphone. I have a couple in mind that would make for a sweet companion to your Red rig.

Interested to see the results with the B4 rig.

Steve

Sorry, guys. I had 13 hours of hand held and then wrap the lighting on a stage. I will get pix tomorrow if I get home at a decent hour.

Re-formatting

Re-formatting

We got our drive yesterday. I tried to work with different framerates but had to format the disk every time I changed the speed.

This need to re-format is because when you change Project Frame Rate you are changing the underlying timecode base of all the recordings. This does NOT mean that you have to reformat when you do a varispeed recording i.e. image capture rate changes can happen within a single Project Frame Rate. For example you can shoot at 4K at 1 fps timelapse, speed ramp in 4K from 12 fps to 18 fps, switch to a 72 fps 2K high speed shot and back to 4K again for your main storyline 24 fps clips - and all within a 23.98 Project Frame Rate.

Same is true for CF cards.

Thanks Stuart

And if you are say, filming in a 25fps Project Frame Rate, can you switch between 2k 25fps and 4k 25fps recording to the same media drive?

And out of interest, why do you need to reformat at all? Why are we doing more than just writing data to a drive until it gets full?

Thanks for the report. We like good news!

Jim

Great News! Could one of you lovely people please record anything in a normally heated room for 1 hour continuously and record the sound of the camera from a cam-mounted shotgun, a lav on a subject 7-8 feet away, and any other mic situations you can muster :-)

THANKYOU THANKYOU!!

OK - got the mics and cables... performing this now. This time using "silent" fan mode.

I don't have the link but I ordered some online at Bestronics. They're cool and shipped pretty fast. I paid around $50 for a 2ft & a 6ft.

I have to reiterate that 4k @ 30p is SUPER SWEET!!!

The drives can handle quite a bit of bumping! I dropped the drive 1 inch several times onto solid granite - no dropped frames. I slapped it pretty good - no drop.

I was able to produce dropped frames by slapping very hard and whacking it with a wood hammer handle. It dose not like hard quick shaking. heavy vibrations like car rigs on rough road will be a problem. The drive can be separated from the camera and perhaps wrapped in foam or bubble wrap to absorb vibration.

I think it would be fine hand held or steadicam in a hardcore music video shoot. It seems to me it can handle an impact well. To the point you will be worried about the rest of the camera, lens....

I have to reiterate again that 4k @ 30p is SUPER SWEET!!!

Holy shit! there's some crazy dude smacking his red drives with a hammer! :)

Seriously though that's great news- thanks for taking a drive through some rigorous testing.

Rich is taking it easy on those drives. You should see the beat down I put them through. Those drives are tough as nails. Spinning drives are spinning drives but those drives are like the Chuck Norris of the drive world.

I (We) have to test them! I have to know what they can do and when they will fail! It will keep me (us) out of trouble when shooting.

Isn't Chuck Norris on a political tour right now?

(I will get to those tests & pix tomorrow)

Spinning drives need to be treated with care or you're shorten the lifespan
tremendously. Dropping a drive like that is not recommended.

Unless you work for Red, then it's just another day of QA to insure you guys out there are well taken care of. All my goofy business aside Deanan makes a great point (as usual)- as tough as these drives are they still posses moving parts. That is the most beautiful thing about having the flash media option as well as the spinning drives. We are equipped for any shooting situation.

Clearly CF is still here to stay. Once 16GB cards are out, and the 64GB RED Flash drives come along, then there will be the workflow answers for everyone.

The only remaining dream might be a less-expensive CF RAID option... At least in my opinion. Even SD RAID would be an interesting option.

Has anyone at RED (I'm looking at you Deanan and Sean) looked at the idea of a RAID-0 4-card CF setup? If you can get fast enough write speeds on 300x CF to use standalone then 4-card RAID-0 with even 266x cards should be achievable? Or is there a performance compromise I'm not really considering here?

I'm imagining a RED Drive-like unit with four CF slots in it, load it up and shoot. Problem is they'd need to be kept in the device for offload (as reading from the broken RAID set wouldn't be readily possible). Maybe a device where the CF cards are 'semi permanent' in mounting (you'd have to remove a panel to change them).

I'll stop now.
